| In fact, Genet's last novel is called Un Captif Amoureux, the French for A Prisoner of Love. In his novel Notre Dame des Fleurs (Our Lady of the Flowers), he presents a sexually ambiguous character (based on himself) that is imprisoned together with so-called queens. | |

I see this album as a concept album. For me, Alexander is the persona (lyrical I) from the previous song, Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels), and the next one. It has sense that in #1, he doesn't mention his brothers, because he "tore our images out of his pictures / He scratched our names out of all his letters", meaning he completely took them out of his life. In #3, Alexander describes atrocities which may refer to those commented on this song. #1 and #3 may be two different persepectives for the same event, the first onirical and the other one real, but perhaps it is the other way around. In Une anée sans lumiére, may be another point of view of #4. In #4 it can be read: "It's not a lover I want no more / and it's not heaven I'm pining for", where Alex forgets about his lover (mother of their children: "you can't raise a baby on motor oil, / just like a seed down in the soil / you gotta give it time", and also mentioned before in the song). The following song, Crown of Love, shows a regretted Alex, sorry for saying horrible things about his lover and future kids, and for making other troubles in the neighborhood. Wake Up presents Alex again, and there is a parallelism between " lighning bolts a-glowin' i can see" in this song with "hey! my eyes are shooting sparks / la nuit, mes yeux t'eclairent". In all these songs, there are different symbols that are appear several times: the eyes, the heart, the cold, the kids, the blood, the lightning, the ashes... I don´t really know what "Haiti" is doing in this concept-seems-to-be album, but symbols are repeated again. A similar thing happens with In the Backseat. In Rebellion (Lies), the same persona from #1 seems to sing about the kids Alex have and then referring to them, Alex's brothers. It shows the personality of Alex, apparently an unworthy husband and parent. |
