I really can't seem to get into this version. Untitled 5 > Last Call. |

| Stars – A Thread Cut with a Carving Knife Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Stars has a recurring analogy with War/Love so it makes sense with the fuck the war line. The song is also about the changing of the season and of the heart. The first part is summer time when their love was pure and innocent. the second part is fall, where everything is starting to wither down. the third is winter, where our hearts are frozen like the snowman in what the snowman learned about love. I think the title says everything about the song. Our life and our love is as delicate as a thread. The world could be a carving knife, strong, aggressive and can end you without a thought. |

| The Weakerthans – Utilities Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Just another reason why John K Samson is a lyrical genius. This song is so sad. It's about the melancholy that seeps into us when we're feeling useless and the objects surrounding us seems just as useless as us. | |
| Stars – Personal Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I also don't think heavy means her weight. I also don't thinks she's ugly or he didn't show up because he saw her picture. I think that explanation would be a little too simple. I think this whole song is about the single male. He doesn't want a "heavy" relationship. He's out there looking for more of a fling or something short term because he's very broken from relationships and all he can manage are short term relationships. He's looking for girls he can debase and who aren't worth much because he isn't worth much himself. Then he meets Caroline, but after viewing her picture, he knows this isn't the type of girl he was looking for. This is the type of girl he could've fallen in love with years ago, but can't now because he's so jaded. The intimacy scared him and he never shows up. He does this so he could save her from himself. He gives up at the end and puts up the ad again hoping to find something not as heavy. |

| Stars – Take Me to the Riot Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song reminds me of the Decemberists song "One the bus mall". It's about how people on the streets have no one else but each other, whether it be drug addicts or prostitutes. I love how Stars could make a chillingly romantic song about addicts. Absolutely amazing. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I'm a huge fan of DCFC and Ben Gibbard. I've pretty much enjoyed everything he's done, but this song as well as the new album falls flat on its face for me. It's boring, repetitive and bland. The lyrics are very watered down and as deep as a puddle compared to Gibbard's other works. I feel bad because I was almost sure I would enjoy this album, but after numerous tries, in hopes of it "growing" on me, I can not seem, for the life of me, to get into this album like I can with Plans, Trans or Photo. Sorry Ben, but this is musically and lyrically mediocre. |

| The Weakerthans – Exiles Among You Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
To me, this song is about a girl who leaves a small town to find herself. She blindly chases her dreams but the world just didn't pan out the way she thought it would. She ends up working at some dead end job that can't even pay the rent. Her body is a defense mechanism that protects her real self. The real self that has been disappointed and let down by the real world. To get her through the day, her body has to be that "older sister" that protects her. She writes a postcard to her best friend, a boy she's known forever, still living in her small hometown. He loves her and knows that she's hopefully hopeful. She's a dreamer and an idealist, but when he reads her postcard, he gets angry because the words are dreary and painful. He realizes that the world has let her down by reading between the lines. The song leaves us at a phone booth. She's at the end of the road. After some shoplifting, she thinks about giving up and calling home and admitting defeat. Her protective body tells her to wave the white flag, but her true self still believes in the world. So she sits there, watching the colors of the street light blink, wondering where she went. She thinks about her best friend and what she left behind, and where it got her. |

| The New Amsterdams – Heaven Sent Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The version with the trumpet is absolutely amazing. | |
| The Postal Service – Nothing Better Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
For the last time, it isn't jenny lewis. It's is jen wood. This might be confusing because ben sang this song with jenny lewis on his solo tour. I think the only song she did with him on the album was we will become silhouettes. On Nothing better though it is Jen Wood. |

| The Decemberists – The Chimbley Sweep Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
myfriendbrenn and chickenflicker, I definitely agree with you. Especially the way Colin spells Chimney "Chimbley". Blake does this in the line "Could scarcely cry ‘ 'weep! 'weep! 'weep! 'weep!’ " which is suppose to be "sweep" with a lisp. Blake does makes it so a very young child is saying it. It is the same as a young child pronouncing a chimney a chimbley, which explains why the song is named so. I think it's these little hints Colin leaves behind in his songs that make the Decemberists so amazing. |

| Jimmy Eat World – Polaris Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| My all time favorite JEW song. I saw it for the first time live not too long ago and it's such an amazing live song. | |
| Jimmy Eat World – Gotta Be Somebody's Blues Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
thanks Jenny, changed it to the album notes... even though I still say its Moot. =) |
|
| Jimmy Eat World – Gotta Be Somebody's Blues Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
thanks adrienne. I made the correct changes. I also think its "When you're feeling moot" It's a weird lyric, but I think it's the correct one. |

| The Weakerthans – Sun in an Empty Room Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Now that the furniture’s returning to its goodwill home With dishes and last week’s paper, rumors and elections, crosswords, an unending wars the black in fingers smeared their prints on every door pulled shut now that the last month’s rent is scheming with the damage deposit take this moment to decide (sun in an empty room) if we were meant to if we tried (sun in an empty room) felt around for far too much (sun in an empty room) from things that accidentally touch (sun in an empty room) the hands that we nearly hold with pennies for the gst the shoulders we lean our shoulders into on the subway, muttered an apology the shins that we kick beneath the table, that reflexive cry the faces we meet one awkward beat too long and terrified know the things we need to say (sun in an empty room) and said already anyways (sun in an empty room) my parallelograms of light (sun in an empty room) and walls that we repainted white (sun in an empty room) sun in an empty room sun in an empty room sun in an empty room sun in an empty room sun in an empty room sun in an empty room sun in an empty room sun in an empty room take eight minutes and divide (sun in an empty room) by ninety million lonely miles (sun in an empty room) watch the shadow cross the floor (sun in an empty room) we don’t live here anymore (sun in an empty room) only line that sounds really hard to figure out is the one about the reflexive cry. Anyways, I love this song. Def one of my favorites off the album. |

| Rocky Votolato – Lilly White Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| can't believe no one's commented on this song. This song is absolutely amazing. I love it when he wails on the harmonica. | |
| The Decemberists – The Apology Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
When I listen to this song, I think of this small boy enjoying his summer vacation from elementary school. His best friend Steven and his family went to Europe for the summer so Steven lent our protagonist his most prized possession, Madeleine, his bike. The bike was stolen and now you have this tiny boy worried out of his mind and sad all summer. Pretty friggin' awesome. |
|
| Saves the Day – Sound the Alarm Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I like what Goatboy said. The whole album is about being enclosed and paranoid. It is to the point where "it's not even funny anymore"... Very borderline suicidal. "when I'm gone, they will all laugh about how i died", "I'm going to die before I save myself" and "falling fear I can't go on." It's so passionate and emotional that you feel like you want to help him. One of STD's best songs IMO. Oh yea, the guitar solo = fuckin' sex. |
|
| Saves the Day – What Went Wrong Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
They're going through withdrawal from the drugs. When you're twacked or coked out, you're really white and you shake and twitched a lot. This to me is the point in the lives of 4 people where they try to figure out what went wrong. You usually don't think about the consequences of drug abuse, until it's too late. Too far down the rabbit hole and it'll be too late to turn back. It reminds me of the movie requiem for a dream. The line "nothing was there" to me means that there were no drugs left to be found, but also that their lives have amounted to nothing. |

| Against Me! – Borne on the FM Waves of the Heart Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| sounds like "backdoors to cover" | |
| Thursday – Jet Black New Year Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Quite possibly the greatest song written by mankind. | |
| The New Amsterdams – Watch the World Cave In Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song reminds me of the last scene in Fight Club. | |
| Modest Mouse – Spitting Venom Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I am not a fan of modest mouse. I've tried many times to get into them, and the vocals just do it for me. That being said, This isn't just the best song on the album, but the best song I've heard so far this year. I absolutely love it. Only thing that sucks is that eight and a half minutes isn't long enough. |
|
| Thursday – Autumn Leaves Revisited Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| qualitywise I like the album version a lot more, but the demo has more sentamental appeal to me. Without a doubt an amazing song either way, especially since this was the song Geoff closed when he was here on their last tour. | |
| Thursday – Steps Ascending Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song's so good I get chills at the end of it. | |
| Camera Obscura – Before You Cry Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| beautiful song. | |
| Sufjan Stevens – The Mistress Witch from McClure (Or, the Mind That Knows Itself) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song is so beautiful. Favorite song off the album. | |

| Rise Against – Roadside Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| It's Emily Schambra. She's the lead singer of a band called holy roman empire also from chitown. | |
| Rise Against – Everchanging Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Everchanging is the perfect title for this song. To me, it means that change is life. There will always be that defining choice of moving on or not. That's what life's definition of. The decisions that predetermine's the path that you take, which are everchanging. | |
| Thursday – Sugar in the Sacrament Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| beautiful song. This album is just straight up amazing. | |
| Rise Against – Prayer Of The Refugee Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I think this song is about war and revolution. There was once a better world where government had yet to corrupt. You will let me down down down to me this is like, saying fuck authority. We've trusted you in the past and you've let us down. We're tired of your table scraps you fucks. It's good people trying to have a life and get fucked over by politicians with hidden agendas. Time to rise. |
|
| Rise Against – But Tonight We Dance Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I think this song's about seizing the moment. Carpe Diem. This guy's been through hell and back, but it doen't matter, because it's the moment that counts. He just wants to be with this girl right here, right now. Be aligned with the stars and the forces of nature and not worry about consequences. No tomorrows, no yesterdays, just tonight, cut yourself free, and dance. |
|
| Rise Against – Behind Closed Doors Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This song is so friggin great. The first couple line hit you like a bag of bricks and takes you on a rollercoaster ride. So good. I think there's a point we're missing it's in the air we raise our firsts in. I love that line. |
|
| Thursday – Telegraph Avenue Kiss Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I totally agree. The demo version (untitled 2) just sucked me in the first listen and kept getting better. The KISS part in this version jus annoys me. This could've been one of the best songs on the album, but ended up being one of the worst. |
|
| Rise Against – Roadside Lyrics | 19 years ago |

instead of "Woke up one day somehow thought how we knew" it's "Woke up one day somehow thought we knew" |
