Excellent, inpraiseoffolly! I tend to think this is a comment on David Gilmour's sexual encounter with his first wife Ginger after they had broken up (the result of which being one of their children, Matthew). It seems I'd read about that somewhere. Don't know if I care too much about that "funeral pyre" line if that's the case! Rough. |

| Ah, thank you very much, inpraiseoffolly! and yes, Meddle IS the perfect "nightcap," isn't it? | |

A GORGEOUS song - I fall to sleep by it (and 'Echoes') almost nightly. I think it's simply a nice slice of cozy life, someplace we'd all like to be or have been - in a beautiful world you've conjured up in your head because you're in love. The world is magical and sensual and sleepy. It's an idealistic little painting of how perfect the world seems at that moment when you're happy. It's almost like a snapshot of contentment. 'Meddle' is a great album. |

| Pink Floyd – Learning to Fly Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I think 'Learning to Fly' has layered meanings - obviously, David Gilmour's fascination with flying (he loves it), the previously-mentioned leadership role that David took on with Pink Floyd after Roger left, and sex. Flying in dreams is equated with sex, and I think it would be negligent not to put the obvious two and two together. Great song! Exhilarating, just like flying - and sex - and perhaps like being able to lead Pink Floyd without Roger Water's heavy handedness. |
