Arcade Fire – In the Backseat Lyrics 19 years ago
it's been stated in numerous interviews of the hardships that several band members experienced during the recording of "Funeral." from my understanding, "alice" is a reference to regine's grandmother who passed during this time.

the backseat/driver metaphor refers to any transitional stage in life in which one is literally forced to grow up and shoulder the responsibilities that come from being on one's own. it is a theme found in just about every song in "Funeral"...the mourning which follows the death of a loved one, the questioning of life, and the consequent lessons learned from the experience.

regine had always felt the comfort from sitting in the metaphorical backseat, where she was able to just "watch the countryside" and "fall asleep." but as family members passed on (the family tree "losing leaves"), she is thrust into the driver seat where she must confront the reality of her situation.

regine, however, suggests uncertainty when she sings:

"I've been learning to drive. My whole life, I've been learning."

to live life, you must accept death. it is a process that she is continually learning, growing as an individual following the death of a loved one.

Jeff Buckley – Morning Theft Lyrics 19 years ago
this song IS about the strong feelings you develop for somebody who was once your friend...and how difficult it is to return to being "friends" after you are involved. from my understanding jeff is making reference to Liz Fraser, singer for the Cocteau Twins. Both had a mutual admiration for one another and were later rumored to be lovers.

the lyric "your precious daughter" refers to Liz' daughter.
