| Belle & Sebastian – Lord Anthony Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I have a very different interpretation that kind of reconciles the "is it a guy/is it a girl" scenarios. My interpretation is that it's about 2 different people. The first half (the first 3 paragraphs: an intro paragraph, followed by 2 story-line paragraphs) is about one character, the male "Anthony/Tony", telling of his difficulties fitting in as everyone mentioned above, and the 2nd half (the preceding 2 paragraphs) reference the female Tony...it's a 2 person story in which they recognize the difficulties of both a young girl and a young both, both of which having difficulties fitting in. Flame me; I may be wrong, but regardless, this is deeply emotional work. I love Belle & Sebastian, but this song, specifically, is one of the better pieces of work I've heard....ever. No hyperbole. Deeply emotional stuff. |

Dude...you guys are all wrong. Here's the deal. This girl cheated on him long ago and he took her back, wholeheartedly. He tries his best to fully trust her in the early lines like he used to: "Ask me anything you like I'll reveal everything I will treasure the truth You could know anything I am but a fool to play unaware of things If I'd treasured the truth I would tell it to you I'm coming down to tell you what I know To say what's real, to let you know Where I have been and how I had to" Then, he starts getting suspicious again and he realizes that she's back to her old ways and she's cheating on him again: "Am I likely to succeed with the way things are? Judging by your smile You are holding something back I'm sleepless around midnight There's a change in the wind The remembrance of things you used to hold back I come around each time your notes are high To tear you down and drag you up To let you know what's going on while I" Those lines "I'm sleepless around midnight, there's a change in the wind." That totally shows that he's suspicious that she's doing it again....he gave his wholehearted trust (begrudgingly) to her once again and he is furious that he's having the same suspicions. This sucks for him...she cheated on him, he took her back, and she cheated on him again. :-( |

| Dude. I can't even begin to describe the discourse I've had about this song....frankly, I have a lot to add but I can't even begin to add it. | |
| Sondre Lerche – You Know So Well Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I agree with a lot of what you said suclid, but I think she is fully aware about how he feels and she's acknowledged it...in fact, I go a step further; I think she knows how he feels, she acknowledges it, but she doesn't feel the same way and it tortures her: "You sleep all night you know you lie awake Tell me, yeah And time is running out and you know so well it may never be" |

Wow. This used to be my favorite song because I felt like it had a positve, uplifting sound, but upon listening to it again VERRRRRRRRRRRRY closely and muting out Sondre to hear the background music only, I've come to realize the cryptic nature of this song! It's about death; that is undeniable...i'm just not 100% certain how. I feel like it's about the interaction between a person and the "other worldly" (ie: ghosts)...listen to the "shrieks" in the background if you don't believe me!!!! Very strange, nonetheless, but still one of my favorites. |

| Sondre Lerche – Don't Be Shallow Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I don't think it's plainly stated, but in case I'm wrong, here's my interpretation: Basically, he's talking to his significant other and basically he can't understand why she can't accept him. He is a bit immature/young hearted and she is making all kinds of extraneous demands of him to be a certain kind of person that he may not necessarily be and he is hurt by this since he accepts her exactly how she is and he can't understand why she wouldn't do the same. All of this is causing a great deal of distress to him as he struggles for her acceptance, almost to the point that he may think it's not worth it to continue. "and you're standing in my way so give yourself a pair of hands today my words to you are fake now you are my mistake and i am yours don't be shallow don't be cheap she prays for you to grow up patiently don't be selffish nor unmanaged you're all i want and nothing more but thats not good enough no no thats not good enough" |
