| Bread – Everything I Own Lyrics

Well, this should settle all the conjecture:
I saw Bread in Salt Lake City in the mid 70's. Before performing this song, Gates said,"Most people think this song is about a lost lover. But it's actually about my father, a very fine man born and raised in the city of St. George Utah."
There you go. |

| Dierks Bentley – What was I Thinkin'? Lyrics

Am I the only person who sees the weird inconsistency in the vehicles in this song? He's obviously in a pick-up (peppered my tailgate), that is a four-wheeler (kicked it in four-wheel). But he refers to "hood-slidin' like Bo Duke". On a PICK-UP? I don't think so! And then he "puts it in drive"? A redneck driving an automatic four-wheeler? I don't think so! |

| America – Sandman Lyrics
|
Some good guesses. But not quite the cigar. Yes, it's about war, but World War One, NOT Vietnam. The members of America were children of American servicemen in England, and they were well aware of the contributions of American fliers defending the UK during that conflict. But only the (relatively) primitive biplanes of that era would have been grounded by something as simple as fog, and a fire to stand around on the INSIDE of a building would fit the period also. "The Sandman" would represent an enemy flying ace (like the Red Baron) that this flier is pursuing or being pursued by.
But remember, as with ANY America song, a good portion of the lyrics are there simply because they sound good together, and don't always have intirnsic meaning. (Check out "Tinman".) |

| Creedence Clearwater Revival – Proud Mary Lyrics

Okay, boys and girls, once again we are arguing over something that has already been published numerous times. First, the lyric is "pumped alot of 'TANE", refering to pumping gas. And John Fogerty has said that he was working on three songs at the same time, "Proud Mary", about a washer woman, "Riverboat", and "Rollin' on the River". The three ended up blending into each other, and "Proud Mary" became the name of the riverboat. Period. That's all there is, no drugs, just living on the river. Fogerty dicussed this at length in an interview with Jay Leno several years ago, and it's all been published. |

| Bruce Springsteen – The Promised Land Lyrics

I have always been delighted by Bruce's purposeful use of place names and locations, ALWAYS making it seem familiar, yet the places he seems to pinpoint don't really exist! (Almost like no one being able to figure out where "Springfield" in the Simpsons really is.) My favorite (as a Utah resident) is in "Promised Land", where he leaves "Rattlesnake Speedway in the Utah desert" and travels across the "Waynesboro County line". The only Waynesboro County in the US is in Virginia!
My other favorite, as an Ohio native, is "Highway Patrolman". The only "Perrineville" in the US is in New Jersey. Frank has Ohio plates. He is chased through "Michigan County" (there is no "Michigan County" in any state), to the Canadian border, the closest access from Ohio being Michigan! |

dasquien is right, the lyrics here are correct. You know, EVERY SINGLE SONG to ever be copyrighted has the official lyrics published somewhere. Songbooks, sheet music, etc., are easy to find. Lyric transcription IS NOT something to fight over, just find the official publication! |

| Bruce Springsteen – Used Cars Lyrics

Pretty self-explanatory song. Reminds me of going to downtown Cincinnati with my dad when I was about 7, to pick up his "brand-new" used '64 Impala.
But am I the only person to find the seating arrangement in this song a little wonky? If Ma is in the back seat all alone, Pa, little sis, the salesman, AND Bruce are all in the front seat! |
