i think this song is still about the relationaship between two lovers. in the first verse and chorus he kind mocks the woman becausehe feels she is mistaking love as acquiring things from the man. his tone is apathetic and numb, saying that his possessions are useless. he is saying that love is not about giving or receiving. he's asking, what good does smelling his scent do to the woman? nothing, in terms of love. that's my 2 cent. i love this song for both its lyric and music. |

i think this song is still about New York city, but it's used as a motif. in the city the weather is really hot, and it kind of signifies the man's chaotic mind. "happily, not like me and you". i think the man feels living in new york isn't suitable for simple, laid-back marriage life. "In New York, I found a friend to drown out the other voices Voices on a cell phone Voices from home Voices of the hard sell Voices down a stairwell" tha man is getting call from his wife on the cell phone. his wife talks to him at home from down stairs. but his life in the big city is so exciting that he somewhat neglects all that. i think this man's feeling numb for love, being overwhelmed too much in the city. i don't know for sure, this is just my opinion. i love this song though. one of my best favorite U2 songs. tha guitar in this song is awesome. |

well i first thoght this song was about being addicted to a girl's smile, a miracle. the girl doesn't really show what she's thinking to the boy, but he is hooked with her smile she shows occasionally. anyway, the story about Chris Nolan really touched me. i think that's the main motif of this song. i LOVE this song for both its lyric and music. |

i agree with Eyecon. "little sister" is some young woman who wants to date with the married man, and he says to her that he doesn't hate her or anything, but he just can't date with her cuz he's married. "beauty" that's repeatedly referred means i guess sincerity toward one's spouse and if a person's not sincere, then he won't end up loving the young woman either. the "mysterious distance" is always there between any man and woman, but he can only lose himself in the "distance" between his wife and himself. this song is why i like u2 so much. bono never seems to cheat on his wife. in my personal life i see too many people who cheat on their spouses and it's pretty depressing. i don't think i'm going to get married when i'm older. anyway, bono's actually the first person to make me believe that there IS the true love thing between a married couple. this is an awesome song, one of my favorite from HTDAAB. |
