They clearly say "property of Tesco", not "prophets". And although their album leaflet says otherwise, it's "I need a bit of black and blue to keep the reputation". It's about befriending and becoming like someone who's quite a laugh, but basically quite a spiteful and evil bastard, then they leave, get a kicking and skip town or stay indoors or whatever so he's left with memories of the guy instead. |

This appears to be shortened version of "Sophie". Perhaps he decided that the rest of the song was too personal to put on his album. |

| Willy Mason – Oxygen (Live Version) Lyrics

I think this is version he plays outside of the US. The meaning's not changed, but he's taken away the bit about "American" values and has added a verse which was either written on road or was rejected from the released Oxygen because the rhyming pattern doesn't quite fit with the rest. |

Dylan's made pretty clear in the past that his "cryptic" songs aren't really about much. I'm not saying it's a completely random selection, but if you seriously think there's some deep meaning or metaphor here then you're just plain wrong. |

The live version in their members-section of their website has slightly differing lyrics:
"There is sweet there must be sour"
...
"As she's dancing in the field of clover"
Which fits the above reasoning even better. But I'm sure it's "...If he took her away" rather than "is he took her away". |

I thought this song was a sort of parody or counterpart to the Blur song with the words "in the country" (I can't remember what it's called). The rythms are quite similar and it's as if Craig is describing the life of someone on the opposite end of the scale from the rich guy in the Blur song. |

Yeah, but their earlier was amazing and they can't go back and change it. That's why they had to "go different places" with their new songs, and so they went for the "death-funk" with this one. |

| The White Stripes – The Nurse Lyrics

|
Taking a less general view than most of you, if you're in hospital (or old or whatever reason he has for a nurse) then you're probably really drugged up and so wil either be oblivious to everythig beyond a couple of feet or really jumpy and paranoid, like here.
This reminds me of when I was a child, I used to think crazy things like "What if I walk into the room and she's standing there with an axe?" |

| The White Stripes – Do Lyrics

Yeah he's better than he thinks, I think.
The people Jack looks up to and admires, the way they acted is now somewhat frowned upon, and the old values have largely been abandoned or ridiculed to the extent that if a man acts like a man he'll be called a thug and maybe a Nazi. Because of all this, in todays society of "tolerance" and as someone said "open-mindedness" you're often left feeling that everything you do is considered immoral whilst everyone else gets away with everything. That's my take anyway. I sound a bit of a Nazi, don't I? |

| The White Stripes – I Fought Piranhas Lyrics

Not to mention Christ burns in Hell for our sins, against his own will?
No, I don't think it's about Christs ressurection. Firstly Jesus wouldn't (at the time) call it Easter, would he? Also cement's too innaccurate a word for a boulder (I thought it was "sermon" anyway). It could be about someone who's become a hated outcast from society and possibleybeen accused wrongly as a result: It's Easter morning and everyone else is in church, but he won't go because he's not wanted, so he takes advantage of this to go into town without prosecution. |

But people weren't all over Meg back when this was brought out, were they? I think it's really funny in interviews when the two of them are they but they put Jack nearer the interviewer and he talks away; whilst she sits there looking like a bored child. |

| The White Stripes – Ball and Biscuit Lyrics

Jack is a seventh son, but I don't think his father was. I don't think there are any actual sxual references here. The words and phrases sound strung together and random, but impressing a woman isn't about forming a sound logical arguement. The "Fuck me, I'm the Shit" persona Jack has in this song is probably how he'd be in real life if he didn't have a Michael Jackson-esque face. |

| The White Stripes – Little Bird Lyrics

Yeah, St. Francis of Assisi preached to birds, look it up if you want (it might be spelled "Assissi"). He had nothing to lose because he had already commited himself to poverty before he started talking to animals. It sort of contradicts Shameless' idea though, so the rest of the song doesn't make any sense now. |

| The White Stripes – It's True That We Love One Another (feat. Holly Golighty) Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
Yeah I noticed that too- that the song that you'd expect to round off the album is second-last them there's something at the end that doesn't fit at all.
The thing about the song's masturbation reference is that we think they're being dirty because we assume they're otherwise very clean-cutt. However, I would argue that they are no purer than the rest of us (except Schizima maybe) and other references are absent just because they rarely make for good songs. |

| The White Stripes – Sugar Never Tasted So Good Lyrics

|
If it was about oral sex then there wouldn't be a baby now would there? I think this is about going off with a girl for the first time. "Just like a baby" could refer to the first time he was satisfied and so briefly had no sex drive. The "Water never tasted so good" bit is him enjoying a more mundane life and now he's learnt his lesson about getting girls pregnant. (It's not based on actual events, incase you're wondering.) |

| The White Stripes – I Think I Smell A Rat Lyrics
| 19 years ago

The White Stripes are not about minimalism (De Stijl was greatly inspired by Bauhaus, but not intended as a tribute to it or anything of the sort, and that's as close as they came). They are purely about good music, regaurdless of how complex it becomes. Even with only two people in the band, three guitars a drum kit a piano and a xylophone-type-thing are still used in live performances. I do agree, though, that their lyrics are often more intelligent than perhaps intended.
This is my least favourite Stripes song, but it seems a lot better when played faster (as in the live DVD version) and now that apheks has offered an explanation. |

6:14 means something? Quick, to the Catholic bible! (If anyone does have a Catholic Bible, could they please, please check 6:14 in all the books and gospels for any significance?)
"Red Death" is what Edgar Allan Poe called Consumption (which killed a lot of Poe's family). |

Jack is indeed a Catholic, although Meg said in an interview that she is not religious.
This song (or the first half at least) could be about shell-shock. Maybe for the second half he's just gone a bit mental or is turning to his faith to keep him going. |

Does it not sound to you like he says "Gonna fuck you" instead of "don't affect you" (and they said otherwise to avoid getting a warning certificate on their album's front cover)?
Unless I'm right about the bit above this song is slagging someone off 'cause they don't want to have any fun with the others and are are being a twat instead. ("Your life is on the wrong end"- most phone numbers start with a 0.) |

His parents are quite rich so he dropped out of school. He's just a kid really, his mother can't help but help him whilst his father wants him to go out and get a job and some respect. The "nervous when she comes around" is him actually starting to like a girl (and so want to get a life etc). Maybe. |

| The White Stripes – Passive Manipulation Lyrics

Originally I thought of this song as a joke but if there is other meaning it's probably like about making sure you understand why you love someone, like making sure you're not one of those men who wants a woman to keep the place clean (I'm convinced they're just wanting mothers) only the other way round sort of (because it's advice to women).
This makes for one of those great songs like "Spider-Man" which you can sing really loudly outside when drunk in some kind of mob-formation. |

I could be completely wrong but I reckon he's sort of worried and confused about his real life and the persona he's created through the band. There's an awful lot of references to other songs of his and it's almost like he's forcing himself to believe his own words, or maybe he's struggling to write new words (Get Behind Me Satan is quite an unusual album and almost provides antithesis with Elephant). |

I love this song, it's weird listening to it whilst walking through the trees and the rain.

| The White Stripes – Apple Blossom Lyrics

Am I the only one who gets the manipulative tones of this song? It's so obviously about him trying to bag a virgin. "They don't really care for you"- he's turning her against them. "I think I'll marry you" makes quite clear his abuse of power. He's not mocking girls who cry, he's just trying to stop this one from crying 'cause she looks better happy and 'cause if he cheers her up she'll be back for more. Fairplay to him though, it works quite well on a lot of girls, and now he's admitting a (slightly) darker side. |
