Richard Hell And The Voidoids – Blank Generation Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the second verse.

Sonic Youth – Cotton Crown Lyrics 18 years ago
I think you filter a heroin solution through a cotton ball before shooting up. I'm not sure about the details exactly, but that could be where "cotton crown" comes from if the heroin interpretation is correct.

Elliott Smith – Cupid's Trick Lyrics 18 years ago
I actually like the explanation that it's just some drug-induced nonsense best of all, but I took Cupid's trick to be sleeping with someone and finding out they're pregnant (mostly from the "stupid kick" line). The first verse, then, would probably be the moment when the two learn the news, but I don't know what the lie would be in that interpretation.

Also, "lick me up" could have meant something similar to "lap it up"; that is, he could be asking "sugar" to believe his lie.

The Decemberists – Shiny Lyrics 18 years ago
I took it for fake tears as well, but turnejam's suggestion of innocence works well. Either way, it sounds to me like the song begins with a relatively innocent, youthful courtship (amusement park references, the "coyly caught alone" line), and ends with the girl leaving him for the sullen beery swine and the boys in denim vests.

Swans – New Mind Lyrics 18 years ago
The song is about a conversion to Christianity: first the narrator is "ready to receive the new mind," then declares that "God is mine," and finally begins a career as a hellfire preacher. And yes, it's brilliant, the video as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF2V0YyFjgg

Sonic Youth – Confusion Is Next Lyrics 18 years ago
Thurston introducing this song in a 1983 show: "It's about communicating with your mother and your father, about talking to your mom." Seems plausible, looking at the lyrics again. Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtobVC9pAFo

The Decemberists – My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist Lyrics 19 years ago
makeshift and jxnarcoticz: Yes, the sister was born in or shortly after WW2. Therefore, she would have been in her twenties or thirties when punk rock got started.

The Decemberists – Culling of the Fold Lyrics 19 years ago
Interesting. Is this a Crane Wife outtake, only played live so far, a compilation track, a b-side, or what?

Swans – She Lives! Lyrics 19 years ago
I took it as a song from the perspective of a hellfire preacher, but your interpretation's probably better.

The Decemberists – The Bachelor and the Bride Lyrics 19 years ago
Just to clear up the baptism/drowning thing: in a recording of one of Colin's solo shows, he finishes up Eli, the Barrow Boy and introduces this song with a comment about how both are about someone drowning.

The Decemberists – I Was Meant for the Stage Lyrics 19 years ago
The song seems kind of satirical to me, particularly with the absurdly overblown ending. It just seems too self-consciously theatrical. Of course, it is a song about having a theatrical personality, but that's just how I take it.

The Decemberists – The Mariner's Revenge Song Lyrics 19 years ago
I have to agree with Cherub Rock. Love the frantic instrumental ending.

Swans – Why Hide Lyrics 19 years ago
It seems to be about the self-destructive environment of many workplaces. Does anyone know what sort of jobs Gira and/or his band worked at this time? A lot of songs seem to be about them, and I've seen an interview in which Gira said that at the time he felt like work was enslavement (or something of the sort, it's been a while since I read it).

Swans – I Want to Be Your Dog (The Stooges cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
He's actually saying "I wanna be your god" on the last verse. It seems odd at first thought that a Stooges song would work well as an acoustic version, but it's not really that different from the original anyway. I didn't like the different riff between the last "I wanna be your dog" and "Well come on" at first, but it's grown on me.

Swans – Job Lyrics 19 years ago
It sounds like it's from the perspective of a hitman to me. I agree that it's one of the sadder songs on Cop, especially how they sing/moan/whatever "heartache to heartache."

Swans – Greed Lyrics 19 years ago
Comforting a fearful/upset person, apparently, but I'm not sure what the title has to do with it. Great song.
