"absolutelyamazing" , I completely agree. It isn't necessary. I think this is just amazing, yeah? I think it's about a girl, or the relationship with her. She's obviously a really sad girl. And the narrator walked away from her, because he didn't feel he could look after her...he was being pulled down by her sadness, even though he loved her. And now he feels that it was selfish. I guess I get a lot of this from the line about the sister, and betraying his promise to her, to look after laura. And the "I wept with your movements." Beautiful beautiful beautiful. |

I really love this song. I agree with coldcomfort, I think it's looking back on the way he felt, and how at that time he couldn't see the point in anything, because everyone ends up the same, and the same thing is expected of us all. RubberDuckieYAY, it's on "a collection of songs written and recorded 1995-1997". This was one of the first bright eyes songs I heard too... Many years ago now, and it has taken a long time for this to grow on me...I guess I felt it was a little too close to home, being so young at the time that I first heard it. But yes, I agree that the lyrics are quite basic... But it's not like the lyrics need to be way complicated for it to be a beautiful sound. |

This song actually makes me angry... It's definately an amazing song, but I get really pissed off...not at the girl, but at the narrator. Why? Because this girl is obviously really hurt, insecure, or whatever, and he doesn't want to help her...the song is about how he wants to, because compassion is in his nature, etc. etc., but helping her drags him down, so basically she can get screwed. I think everyone is really quite sympathetic towards the male character, but I feel that in this song, that's quite a selfish role...like he tried to help a bit, but realised that seeing his friend like this hurt him, so decided she can deal with it on her own. It's like if somebody asked you what's wrong, because you were sad, and you don't tell them, then they get pissed off. |

You know, as Bright Eyes gets more and more popular, and further into the mainstream, the more I love the way people flinch when I play this song. I think it's amazing how one song can tear someone up inside, like ti does to me, and bring tears to my eyes because of its beauty, but then to another it can make them want to throw themselves on the floor screaming with their fingers in their ears... Teehee. Anyway, I guess as you may have gathered, me, and others who use my account just can't stop commenting on this song... Personally, I think it's about a relationship that has already ended, and "It's cool, we can still be friends" is what he said to her when they broke up. But really, they can't just be friends, because he is so deeply in love with her, and just wants to forget. Amazing, pure genious. |

Heard this for the first time today, I think it's fantastic. It reminds me a little of the work of Conor Oberst, but that's just me. I saw this performed on a television show, and when it was remarked upon that "It sounds like you really don't like America" he replied with something along the lines of "No, I really like America. I'm the typical patriot. I love the country for the Idea of what it is...just not really the reality." Amazing song anyway. |

I definately agree with RawkYerSoksOff. To me it just seems that the narrator of the song has died, and this is him talking to his lover, telling her that he'll always be there, protecting her. I adore the "My Baby" bit too...it's an amazing song. |

When I hear this song, I think of a boy in a relationship who is over his head, unexperienced, and nervous. The woman he's with knows exactly what she's doing, and is patient with the guy, but still he is incredibly nervous, and the lyrics to this song are the strongest he can find to express how he feels. He's clearly in love with the woman, but just doesn't know how to show it, and is worried that if he doesn't she might get bored, and leave. I'm probably a long way off, but that's just the impression I get. Anyway, amazing song, one of my favourites off a collection. I love the simplicity of it... |

Conor's fan base is slowly growing, and for that, I think songs such as this one are responsible. An amazing song, and as for the reference to the poem on the first page, you could be right, about the title/last line connection. I've heard his work compares with various poems, so perhaps he draws inspiration from poems regularly... This is another of his songs, that sticks with me. |

I agree with Marx, at least on the level of how everyone has their own idea of what talent is. Master_of_puppets, I don't deny that Matlock was a better bass player, but sid had more character, like johnny. and by the way, he did record with them, but not many tracks. I'm not sure if Sid killed Nancy. I mean, I guess I believe he did, not consiously or deliberately, but at the same time, he loved her so much, I don't know that even that would be possible. And as for the fact that Sid did this song himself... Hardly a little known fact. |

I can understand where the male/female confusion came in for some...when I heard my first KH song, I was confused for a few minutes too. I think Riffinton's meaning was excellent. Waste-of-paint, and those with similar comments, just because someone didn't jump onto the internet after hearing a song they like, does not give you the right to bitch at them. Without such people, there would be no one you could discuss it with. |

There are very few songs that have made me feel like this one does...I get this kinda shredded feeling in my stomach. Conor Oberst is one of very few artists that make me so emotional. This song almost makes me feel guilty, for feeling miserable, ever, because there are so many people like amy out there... I'd like to thank everyone for a great set of comments. They all added a little more to the meaning. In answer to lovelove677, I think the second line might be to do with the kids at school asking questions about why she's bruised, and she says it happened on the bus...it could be that not only does Amy suffer this sexual abuse, but violence as well. I have no idea about the coat line though... it seems to have been established that the white part is purity, but perhaps the coat means something else? I'm not sure. All I know is, this song makes me amazed at its beauty, but sick and guilty at the same time. -I hope that one day, there will be less Amys in the world. |

Ok, like "unpopular", I really am not an Avril Lavigne fan. In fact, to be honest, I usually hate her. But this song, I first heard it when the album was first released , and wow, this track is pretty amazing. For her to release a track like this, that someone who usually despises her work wants to listen to...that shows a bit of versatility, really... For me, this song really seems to be about wanting someone to show the emotional strength to give up on drugs, and see that that's not who they are, or what they need. The narrator is prepared to take the person back, as a friend or a lover, as long as they can do this. But that's just coming from my perspective, having been around people affected by drugs, so quite a few songs come across like this to me...there are any number of things it could be about. Anyway, good song |

I don't think we can say this song means nothing (heraldwheathervein) While the interview was of course fake, as we have established, and the song means nothing literal, I think it could symbolise another side to the narrator...like, a part of him/her died, because of something that happened...Or a part of them is missing, since as long as they can remember, but they can't identify what it was, but want to know what it was...and are punishing themselves for not knowing. I actually don't think my theory is all that accurate, just another possible explanation. I don't say "Conor" in this, because as was mentioned earlier, it could be a person he knew, or an entirely fictional character. I really am curious to see what the baby/bathtub, fever, mirror, clocks, necklace...and all the other reoccurring things mean. Also, in "The Calender Hung Itself" there are the lines "Is he coughing now, on a bathroom floor, for every speck of tile, there's a thousand more" The tile/bathroom thing again... Any ideas? |
