to me this song sounds like hes doing drugs but "a good friend"(quote from later in the song) doesnt want him to. the thing that first gave me this idea was "came as a gift from a good friend. that dissaproves but understands. you represent and actively encourage all of my worst habits." besides John Nolan (we all know he wrote all the lyrics back from TAYF) in "you know how i do" wrote about one of his friends doing drugs and how he wanted to them to stop basically. i think he was talking about Adam ----------------------------------------------------- The first degree was a riot We're making sure Our lesson's learned I'm not ashamed, but im trying I've come to expect The standards you have set ---------------------------------------- this sounds like he got in trouble for some drug and they're making sure his lessons learned. then he's saying he's "not ashamed but he's trying." and that he's come to expect the standards someones set like a friend of his is dissapointed in him for that ------------------------------------------------ Tell me just how dangerous is second best You settle for less Then I'm sure you'll settle again ------------------------------------------------ this is like saying "fine you don't want weed/whatever and to have a 'good time'? you're settling for less. ---------------------------------------------- There's no stoppin me I'm gutting you out (Does this make you feel safe?) There's no stoppin this I'm gutting you out (Does this make you feel safe?) ----------------------------------------------- and here it is again. it sounds like someone he knows is trying to stop him "there's no stopping me" and trying to stop him from doing drugs and his response is "there's no stopping this" ---------------------------------------------- The closer that I look is just The further that you get already Stubborn skin thickens in attempt to understand Understand.. --------------------------------------------- this sounds like the closer hes trying to look at someone the further they seem away because he's high/whatever. and that his friend is stubborn and they're trying to understand him but don't ------------------------------------------------- We got tired, got tired of waiting around (of waiting) The guilt subsides, the night begins (of waiting) And I know it's not what you deserve now ------------------------------------------------- this sounds like he was just tired of waiting and bored so he just went and did drugs again and that night begins (he's high) and the guilt subsides (he doesnt feel guilty anymore because he's high) and the last part sounds like maybe he got pissed off at his friend for trying to get him to stop since he was just trying to help him (the "i know it's not what you deserve part") --------------------------------------------------- Came as a gift from a good friend (a good friend) That dissaproves (but understands) To represent and actively encourage all of my worst habits They all are proof that we are both capable Of the most terrible things Don't test me ----------------------------------------------------- this is him saying he got the drugs from a good friend but they dissaprove even though they understand and that that friend represents his addiction and "worst habits" and him doing the stuff is "proof that we're both capable of the most terrible things" --------------------------------------------- anyway thats all ive got good song not sure if thats the real meaning...but it seems to make sense |

just to let you know the chorus from this song is exactly the same lyrics as the breaking pangaea (fred's old band) song wedding dress ..it seems like adam was just lazy and he and fred thought it would be cool to just stick the chorus from "wedding dress" in because it has such good lyrics. ----------------------------------- "And it's all too familiar And it happens all the time All the cards begin to stack up, Twisting heartache into fine Little pieces that avoid an awful crime, But it's you I can't deny" ----------------------------------- by the way the song wedding dress is way better than this and also by the way Taking Back Sunday got their name from a phrase from the Breaking Pangaea song "Sick Day" ------------------------------------ Do you feel it? Feel the same? {Taking back sunday} is all that we can do Or remember days I spent with you ------------------------------------ ...just thought id let you all know that |

| yeah fred must have suggested they use the "And it's all too familiar and it happens all the time. All the cards begin to stack up, twisting heartache into fine little pieces that avoid an awful crime. But it's you I can't deny. " part for the tbs song my blue heaven because its exactly the same lyrics | |
| Taking Back Sunday – Up Against (Blackout) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i agree with zero. i miss the old tbs sound from where you want to be and tell all your friends. and yeah where is the variety on this cd? i mean the guitar riffs are way more in depth than before, but the guitars sound the same in every song except for the beginning of 'whats it feel like to be a ghost.' this cd was way dissapointing. i especially hate the complete unoriginality on the song divine intervention where they not only steal that line "these are a few of my favorite things" from sound of music, but they also made a complete powerchord song, that speaks volumes for how tbs went right down the drain. and is it me or are the lyrics way less catchy than 'where you want to be'? | |

| Taking Back Sunday – I Am Fred Astaire Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I’m pretty sure this song is about john leaving adam because he’s sick of him and also I think it probably has to do with the whole story about how adam was a jerk to michelle (john’s sister) ----------------------------------------------------- I'm under the assumption that I'm gonna be the one that's leaving you tonight, tonight Well I've flipped every switch that I could find on my way out just to upset you more (just to keep you busy), just to make you angry (just because you were right), just because you were... ---------------------------------------------------------- (this part makes adam sound like he doesn’t want to leave john but its because of him that john is leaving and then the “I’ve flipped every switch on my way out just to upset you more…” it sounds like adam pissed off john in every way possible because john was criticizing him even though adam knew he was right about whatever it was and that’s where the “just to make you angry (just because you were right)” part comes in) ------------------------------------------------------- All tired, scream safe haven, let's get this out and on the table ----------------------------------------------------- (and then this part is saying that adams tired of this, and just when he thought he was safe (“safe haven”) he was wrong because in his words, the problem it got “out and on the table” ------------------------------------------------- Fast forward to say four o' clock I'm keeping time, I'm holdin', we're always holdin' (we're always holdin'), we're always holdin, holding out and that's what got us here in the first place You should have never come here alone (you should have never bothered at all) bothered at all -------------------------------------------------- (then hes saying like later that he kept holding out hoping john didn’t find out about whatever it was, because adam holding out on whatever it was, was “and that’s what got us here in the first place” which basically meant him holding out got john to the point where john was disgusted with adam and wanted to not be around him anymore.. and then the “you should have never come here alone” I think that’s adam talking about michelle(johns sister that supposedly adam acted like a jerk to to make john leave TBS)) ------------------------------------------------------ We're older and wiser, still filled with resentment We got it, we got it all (I haven't been happier since) Older and wiser, still filled with resentment, We got it, we got it all (I haven't been happier since, I haven't been happy, no, not since) ------------------------------------------------------ (not only is this like Straylight Run’s “a slow descent”, I think adams saying that he’s been through more now and he’s learned from it, but he has no regrets and he still has resentment and he hasn’t been happier since then) ------------------------------------------------- Well, five 'o clock the floor caught fire with footsteps (my footsteps) It spread like a disease to the door (I'm stuttering through it, but I hear it) Well I, I hear it's good t-t-to stick with you and you know a whole lot of this It all could have been avoided when you were courtside for this nightmare Well since then I got myself, come and listen --------------------------------------------------- this verse is where the song title “I am fred astaire” comes in. fred astaire was a great dancer, and this verse is connecting how adam was dancing around the problems which is the “the floor caught fire with footsteps.” If you didn’t catch that, that basically means like dancing |

| Taking Back Sunday – ...Slowdance on the Inside Lyrics | 19 years ago |

you know personally Passed out in our school clothes so we'd wake up in our Sunday's best I never asked for your opinion I just got it and I get We move slow like daytime drama and I'm boring like his songs So while I'm takin' you for granted we'll be hummin' along [1st line means to get rid of something ordinary like school clothes and to wake up in sunday's best means to be sorry about whatever it was because "sunday" you know religion. the rest of that stanza means i don't like your opinion but i heard it anyway and understand. then "slowlike daytime drama" i take that to mean boring and that he's in a relationship that he took her for granted but didn't realize he missed her until she left] Well cross my heart and hope to I'm lyin' just to keep you here So reckless, oh (so reckless) so thoughtless (so thoughtless), so jealous I could care less Cross my heart and hope to I'm lyin' just to keep you here (so reckless) Well I'll keep you here (so thoughtless) I... (I could care less) [the chorus is pretty self-explanatory, he really wants the girl to stay so he's lying to her about things and that he's so reckless, jealous, and careless about it] So paint your face up something elegant and this town maybe a darker shade of red 'cause a long night means a fist fight against your pillow and my pearly whites I wanna hear you scream You like me better on my knees So let us pray (we don't believe in) So let us pray (second chances) Don't you ask me and don't you "I win" [alright whatever perverted faggot though the pearly-whites and sheets was about sex, your a faggot. Adam would not have as little tact as that to write about something like that. Also, anything if taken in the wrong way can be thought to be talking about sex. anyway on to the meaning for the stanza i think it means put on makeup (so paint your face up something elegant) and to make him hurt a little more by making him jealous she's not his anymore. and then he's talking about long nights making him have a fistface with his pillows because he's angry with himself for letting her go since he knows what he's missing. and the pearlywhites part as showing his teeth and shouting and crying etc. "i want to hear you scream, i like you better on your knees" i think he intends for that to be the girl in the relationship talking saying she likes to see him beg at her feet. and the "so let us pray..." is showing he wants things to get better again.] Well one of us never did it, but were takin' it all And tell me why you never promised that you wanted it all And though her eyes never batted when she said it It's a long night Open Know it all [first line means he didn't do anything wrong "one of us never did it" but she's "taking it all" (taking the relationshiop w/her when she leaves) then "tell me why you never promised that you..." saying he had wanted her to tell him is she wanted an in-depth relationship. And the "her eyes never batted when she said it..." this is probably referring to her telling him it's over.] This glass house is burning down You light the match I'll stick around I'll give you everything you want and wish the worst on what I was This glass house is burning down You light the match I'll stick around I'll give you everything you want and wish the worst on what I was ["glass house refers to the relationship and "burning down" that it's falling apart. "you light the match, i'll stick around" he's saying let her ruin the relationship and he'll stick around and cry and be full of sorrow. Then he says he always gave her whatever she had wanted, but she just wished the worst on what he was. and then he's saying it doesn't matter though, because tonight won't make a difference and he can't save their relatrionship] there. i'm done and thats my opinion on the song...take it or leave |

| Taking Back Sunday – Brooklyn (If You See Something, Say Something) Lyrics | 19 years ago |

ok i kind of agree with you the previous comment, but i think it seems out of character for adam to talk about the government. ok so... i think it is talking about a relationship (since that is what adam almost always used to sing about) i think he's saying that he was better of believing everything the girl told him was true. that sounds like hes giving advice to people so they dont get hurt like him. and then the "genuine and unprepared" sounds like stories and excuses he got from his girl. i think the whole song is talking about how he was hurt by her and is homesick and is glad he's finally "homebound" to brooklyn. just to point something out...a lot of times singers put things in there that sound good because they needed inspiration, not always because every phrase has meaning to it. while i agree with the "if you see something then you should say something" came from the NYC motto, but i think he threw it in there because it sounds good and that it reminds him of the home that he misses ok i'm done |

| Taking Back Sunday – Twenty-Twenty Surgery Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
uh first of all it is not over my head. the song basically means that adam's leaving a relationship but once he's left it it's not as good as he though it'd be. it sounds like he's real moody and can't decide if he's happy he's left the relationship or if he's sad. and it seems like the "you're so sensitive" is sarcasm and that the chick was really in truth, heartless |

| Straylight Run – A Slow Descent Lyrics | 19 years ago |

first of all john is a much better with lyrics than adam lazzara. alright i think this is definately talking about how john was with taking back sunday and they struggled to get big then they became big, and that was when adam lazzara started being a dick to his sister. "the focus on the friends and the feelings that made those stupid songs all worth singing and don't you say a word unless you're pretty sure that you want it analyzed" i think hes talking about adam and his fighting with him that makes all the straylight run songs worth singing. i mean come on, it sounds like john despises lazzara. |

you know i noticed this sounds incredibly the straylight run's "a slow descent" im tired, cynical and broken but wiser, heavy with a sense of resentment compared to "scream older and wiser still filled with resentment" ???? just my take but i think before John left TBS they were working on a song that had lyrics like that and then they broke up and Adam stole the lyrics from John |
