Peter Gabriel – Solsbury Hill Lyrics 19 years ago
I feel that Solsbury Hill is a song about searching your own self, about searching the deepest essence of your soul, and finding the strength and determination to do what is necessary, to do what is right and to do what is difficult. It´s about doing the right thing, the thing that feels right to you, even when it means going against all reason and all odds, because it´s worth it. This is the reasong for the similarity to the stories of Buddah and Jesus, for they both did just that, went against everyone else for what they believed and what they knew was right, and it was damned hard for them (it cost Jesus everything), but it was worth it. We should all learn something from this song.

Toby Keith – Courtesy of the red, white, and blue (angry american) Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, this is how it is. If you don´t like or agree with this song, you are a fucking unpatriotic motherfucking traitor (yes, the profanity is HIGHLY necessary) and your ungrateful ass should be kicked out of this country and/or dragged into the street and shot. Understood?

Wow people, please stop being fucking stupid ass liberals. And please stop being so goddam anal and stupid, but more importantly, GET YOUR HISTORY STRAIGHT!!! You are throwing random, incorrect facts out there about a country and a war you don´t even understand, just to attack a funny, totally joking, song. Now go fuck a tree or something...

That's why it's bad to have feelings, cause they're ephemeral and fake.

R.E.M. – Undertow Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think that the song's saying that God is no good, i thinks it's saying that everytime man tries to interpret or understand God we fuck it up, and terribly too, and that we always have and always will.

There is only God. Religion is the constructs of men and men alone. Let it fall away with the rest of it all. You don't need heaven as some far off prize or goal just to make you believe in God. Just let it all take you and wash you away, just go drown and let the water clean you as it kills you and let yourself find God and God alone.

R.E.M. – Be Mine Lyrics 19 years ago
One thing that everyone seems to have missed is that he is basically saying with this song that he loves somone enough to give his life to them, to basically martyr himself in their name. The Jesus-related Christian holiday refernces clearly point to this. Think about it, Jesus did what? Gave his life to those he loved (us). To do what (save our souls and strip the world of sin.).

I'll strip the world that you must live in
Of all its godforsaken greed

What else could that line mean?

Peace out, peace out.

How does one man put some much sorrow into a song? You can't just listen to it, you are always going to be moved somewhere deep down by this song.

The retreating to the sea idea is good, like when people get hurt in life and become selfish, single minded, or introspective.

Oh, yeah and the "kicked his feet to sleep" thing may be somone's death convulsions.

Ok, let's get one thing straight real quick. A swami is a hindu religious teacher, similar to a guru. Anyway, I think this song is about how many holy men are to removed from baseline humanity to actually connect with god properly. In a way, Ed's saying they are too prudent to actually immerse themselves in God, where as many desperate people have no problem with that. The dirge indicates a loss, probably of a brother, which would make whoever this song's point of view from somone who is willing to immerse themselves in God.
