LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great Lyrics 18 years ago
i noticed the line "you're smaller than my wife imagined..." before i looked at all of the references to death and loss. i still think that the line about his wife must refer to a baby, but given some of the other lyrics ("there's all the work...songs to be finished") it seems like he's talking about the hectic state of his life -- his work and his family life fighting for his time and his emotions. all of that makes me think that maybe he's trying to convey being sorry and upset that this person who died didn't have a chance to meet his newborn child. there's obviously a death involved because of the liner notes, so maybe a birth and a death happening near the same time have really affected his life.

The Decemberists – O Valencia! Lyrics 18 years ago
as far as the background and inspiration for the song, i woulc have to agree with totallyrufas23. at a live show in san francisco last fall, colin meloy said that he wanted to write a updated version of a classic story set in the mission. he loved the street name "valencia", and kept it even though his girlfriend told him that the actual street wouldn't match his story because, "south van ness just doesn't sound as good."

as far as the interpretation, i think that it should be open, and i think that the lack of gender identification is pretty irrelevant, although one could get into a lenghty digression about homosexuality within gang culture. it seems to me that having emphasized gender and orientation would have detracted from the song.

Matt Pond PA – Brooklyn Stars Lyrics 19 years ago
it seemed obvious to me at first, but perhaps i'm just reading what i want it to be into it:

he's leaving her house early in the morning, trying to avoid awkwardness, while she's pretending to be asleep for the same reason. i'm not sure about every line, but the rest of the song seems to be about people being self-centered and becomming oblivious to the pleasantries of everyday life in the pursuit of whatever it is they want (ie. to get home)
