Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Vanessa from Queens Lyrics 19 years ago
Bob Packwood was a Republican senator from Oregon who's political career ended in the mid-nineties after he was accused of sexual assault by no fewer than 29 women. The song alludes to the life of a trophy wife, but takes on a contrastingly darker tone when paired with this little tidbit.

Pavement – Raft Lyrics 19 years ago
Just thought I should mention that the last stanza there is:

Damn the gold-diggers
All around this funky place
Damn, damn, damn
all the forty-niners...

Absolutely fantastic song - picked up the "Crooked Rain x2" reissue on a lark, but I'm really digging what I'm hearing so far.

Hot Snakes – No Hands Lyrics 19 years ago
This one's got me thinking about the Communist Manifesto, and the great division between the Proletariat and the Bourgeious. It's easy to imagine that the hands in this song represent a downtrodden working-class increasingly taken for granted and abused by the major body of capitalism. "Yeah, cut 'em off me - I could do this with stumps..."

Hot Snakes – Mystery Boy Lyrics 19 years ago
This is the only Hot Snakes song John Reis sings lead vocals on. Not that I'm complaining, but it sounds more RFTC than Hot Snakes... odd choice.

Hot Snakes – Unlisted Lyrics 19 years ago
Easily the best song on the album - a good stereo and high quality headphones are the only way to do it justice. There's seriously something trancedental about John Reis' guitar riffs on this one.

Hot Snakes – Our Work Fills The Pews Lyrics 19 years ago
One look at the stats
You won't look twice
One look at the numbers
You'll pine and die

My memory
Serves me right
History does no disservice
To the bottom line

It was over 'fore it even started
Yeah it's the science of the truth
Got a feeling that you just can't shake?
Face it - our work fills the pews

Uh-huh-huh

Figure all of this for nothing
There's a precident for what I do
I Got numbers and you can't ignore them
My ways, my work fills the pews

My memory
It serves me right
Take a long hard look
You'll switch up sides

Stick a pin anywhere on a map
You'll find us there
That makes us a natural selection
That makes it fair

There's a passage in the city charter - yeah
You should read it through
It was over 'fore it even started
It's the science of the truth

Taking liberties I should take
There's a precedent for what I do
I got a feeling that you just can't shake it
Face it - our work fills the pews
