Well I have the booklet that has lyrics, and it does indeed say "dead fly". Other fixes: Verse 1: "You progress in letters but you're used to cooking broccoli" Chorus: "And an obsession with the past is like a dead fly Only a few things are related to the old times When we did believe in magic and we did die It's not my words that you should follow, it's your insides You're just an inside Adjust your insides You're just an inside" Verse 4(or 3?): "With half of me waiting for myself to get calm I'm like a pelican at red tide I'm a corpse I'm not a fisherman A blow out does not mean I will have a good night" Verse 5: "Only the taste that you’re cooking could make me bow on the ground It was the clouds that carved the mountains It was the mountains that made the kids scream" Verse 6: "Oh well she bore all her parts but she never was found. You think I'll carve a path through New York And be an artist but are you anything Then you find out you can't ask a baby to cry And an obsession with the past is like a dead fly" |

| of Montreal – The Repudiated Immortals Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I always thought it was written from the point of view of an immortal being, someone who sees so many injustices and wrongs that they only assumption s/he can make is that god "wants his little things to cry". But at the end the immortal thing realizes that there is still beauty to the world and resolves to make the best of it. Something we all have to do at one point. | |

| of Montreal – Spike the Senses Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Kinda depressing for a song about getting high. Like he does it to escape his life, rather than enhance it. | |

| The Decemberists – The Perfect Crime #2 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Man, this is a bad song. Sounds like some dance-rock throwaway from Franz Ferdinand or The Killers. Why'd ya do it, Colin Meloy? Still,. the lyrics should me "Sing, Muse" not "Sing News". I don't think it is related to The Bagman's Gambit.. the two have different characters and if you take out the one use of the word "bagman" there is no real connection between the two. |

| Definitley beats "A Cautionary Song" as the darkest Decemberists song. :s | |
| The Decemberists – O Valencia! Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| A musical version of Romeo and Juliet. I think of it as an alternate version of "We Both Go Down Together", this one ending with vengance rather than suicide. Great song. | |
| The Decemberists – The Crane Wife 3 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
As Wikipedia says it: "The Crane Wife is an old Japanese folk tale. While there are many variations of the tale, a common version is that a poor man finds an injured crane on his doorstep (or outside with an arrow in it), takes it in and nurses it back to health. After releasing the crane, a woman appears at his doorstep who he falls in love with and marries. Because they are in need of money, his wife offers to weave wondrous clothes out of silk that they could sell at the market, but only if he agrees never to watch her when she is making it. They begin to sell them and live a comfortable life, but he soon makes her weave them more and more. Oblivious to his wife's diminishing health, his greed increases and he eventually peeks in to see what she is doing to make the silk she weaves so desirable. He is shocked to discover that at the loom is a crane plucking feathers from her body and weaving them into the loom. The crane, seeing him, flies away and never returns." That seems to fit the best here.. the arrow and the fact that he says he loves her and wants to keep her but lost her due to greed all fit. It's amazing how such a complete story could be told through song and still have great music to back it up. |

| The Decemberists – On the Bus Mall Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This song is about impovershed boys in the poor part of a town who turn to prostitution to make money. They bond through their hardships. Don't know what a bus mall is, but it sounds like a crappy place to live. |

| The Decemberists – Los Angeles, I'm Yours Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I don't notice any love for L.A. Meloy mentions all the bad things but he never says a single positive thing about the place. The "I'm Yours" reminds me more of surrender than affection. I agree with him. What a disgusting city. (No offense to the people who live there, you probably had no choice.) |

| Elliott Smith – Pitseleh Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| With that beautiful piano solo in the middle of the song I could hardly think about lyrics. Honestly, that could have been the entire song and it would STILL be unbelievable. Elliott must have been super-human or something. | |
