The Dresden Dolls – Shores of California Lyrics 19 years ago
Uh, this is pretty far beyond a "hint" of sarcasm, if it is sarcastic. Again, I'd accept that it was sarcastic if there was anything about sex in their lyrics that wasn't totally negative.* It seems to be a pretty depressing but strong underlying theme - sex sucks for women.

And as for "just a song" - of course it is. And this is just a site where people discuss what lyrics mean to them. So... uh...?

*Or, well, /only/ as negative as everything else in their songs instead of way more negative. Y'know.

I did wonder if it was sarcastic, as it's so over-the-top, but sex is always so very negative every time it comes up - Sex Changes, Coin-Operated Boy, First Orgasm - that I can't help but think it's not. I suppose it's hard to say for sure.

The use of Lysistrata as an attempt to prove the song's point - that women are only interested in romance and men are only interested in sex - proves that Ms. Palmer has never read the play in question. The humor in Lysistrata comes partly from the fact that the Greeks regarded women as having difficulty restraining their wild sexuality, so for them to willingly give up sex would be insane. The women in the play are miserable at Lysistrata's idea and declare that they would rather die than give up sex, but finally reluctantly agree because they want the war to end.

The Iliad reference is similarly poor, but too vague to really comment on.

The rest of it is pretty obvious, although the "maybe to prevent overpopulation" line is even more bizarre than the others, given that the earth is overpopulated, and people have been having lots and lots of sex as long as they've been on the earth. Contraceptives are only just beginning to slow the birthrate down.

I'm sorry that the writer either has no sex drive or has never had an enjoyable sexual experience or both, but it's flat-out dumb and false to claim that all or even most women are just like her. The claim that all men are sex-craved rapists would be even nastier - except that goes hand-in-hand with the claim that women just need to accept the pressure from men to have sex and that they're going to get their drinks spiked with GHB by men who want to rape them, because "god made" things this way. Also, since women don't like sex, pretty much any time a man tries to have sex with a woman it'll be attempted rape.

Why would any woman who believes this want to be in a relationship with a man?

In short, this is a lovely-sounding song but the lyrics are atrocious and vile.
