This song is beautiful. It was played at my wedding, as the song is so powerful to me. My husband and I have never been to Barcelona, but the imagery and the emotion were so deep to us. The line that reminds me of my husband is:

I have loved this song since 1978 when I first heard it. As the PROUD owner of the fattest ass in the southern hemisphere, I consider this my theme song. Shanty towns have existed (at least in America) since the Great Depression. A shanty town consists of low-cost, poorly constructed dwellings, usually located on the outskirts of town. This is exactly the kind of place the waitress would be taking him, to "pull the curtains down." I love how he uses the description of a bunch of guys in the bar watching the Yankees game to segue into his own attempts to get laid. Classic Billy lyrics! Love the jazzy sound too! |

TheCrossX is right on target. This is one fucked up dude, who is living at home, having a miserable life in a shit town. His sister is off having fun and he's at home wanking. Even out on the corner in his hip clothes, he's still hopeless (still your finger's gonna pick your nose). He's a loser who is going nowhere and he uses the drugs to create some great fantasy life. The best line which sums it up: "you're twenty-one and still your mother makes your bed - and that's too long." |

It's definitely about wanting to shag some virgin. He makes a few good jabs at the Catholic church in the process, too, but in a way which still comes off as comical and light. My preacher grandfather used to say "only the good die young" when someone young died, as a way to comfort or explain what seemed unacceptable. This is my fave Billy Joel song. He wrote it thirty years ago and hasn't topped it, in my view - although there are a few others which come very close. I love the way he keeps the music and the lyrics simple, but manages to convey a wealth of emotion in three minutes. It's a sad song about the end of the relationship, but somehow there is a positive feeling about it too, like you can choose to wallow in it, or get on to better days (sadness or euphoria). That's what makes Billy so awesome - he really knows how to capture complex emotions. |

Billy has said in a couple of lectures/interviews that the song was about a particularly bad date with Bianca Jagger. He added that he wanted to write a song about a hangover, but apparently didn't. He was probably boozed (or on something else) too, but the song is about the woman ... hence the Halston dress. |

The guy in this song just can't shake the desire for this girl, with whom he obviously had an amazing one night stand. We've all been in love - and lust - like this and it can take over your life, but you learn as you mature to let things go. He's a young guy, obviously (since he mentions failing in school) and that makes it more believable to me. I'm also impressed that Billy was in touch with those emotions to write from that perspective when he was 30. Perhaps it was recalling an obsession of his own, or just relating to the feeling that many young men have experienced. It's a great song lyrically as well as musically. |

Supposedly, Billy's father lives in Vienna. The story I heard is about the old woman he saw while visiting his father there. Obviously, in the bigger picture (as you've all said) the song is about not rushing around while you're young ... that it's all waiting for you and there's no need to hurry to get it ... it will be there. All in all, it's one of Billy's best songs and one of my faves. |
