| Regina Spektor – Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
The title is the last line of the poem "Dulce es Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen which means "it is sweet and honourable to die for one's country." The poem is told by a soldier in WW1 watching a fellow soldier die from being gassed. These words are delivered ironically as the soldier watches the horror of war and sees how pointless to die for one's country it really is.

| Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth Lyrics

i don't know how much of a connection there is, but to me the title seems to be referencing the Thorton Wilder play "The Skin of Our Teeth". It's sort of fitting since "The Skin of Our Teeth" was considered almost avante garde when it first was written and a lot of people think that about Clap Your Hands Say Yeah music |

| Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics

As some others have said, although Sufjan tends to put religious themes into his music, this song seems to be dealing with a faltering in the narrator's faith after losing someone he loves so completely. I think it is the love in this song that makes it so painfully beautiful or beautifully painful. The love between these two people is so pure and innocent and young that the fact that one of them is even capable of dying is horrifying to think of. This song is heart-wrenching and so lovely. |

| Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
I don't know if this is too much of a stretch, but this song always reminds me of the book The Catcher In The Rye. The tone of the song reminds me of how Salinger writes-not so much in Catcher but more in his stories of the Glass family in Nine Stories-and the mixing of the terms 'brother' and 'best friend' also remind me of the relationships between Phoebe, Holden and Allie Caulfield.
The first verse is Phoebe's verse. She is always eccentric and she writes all the time. She also notices all the small details about people and places so she would easily be fixated on a wasp on the wall.
The next verse reminds me of the Caulfield siblings. The major image in the song that connects it to Catcher for me is this line "brothers red hat" which is like Holden's red hunting hat.
The rest of the song makes me think of Holden, especially when he is in one of his crazier moments. The death of his brother Allie nearly drove him mad and sometimes he seems to forget that Allie is dead, or at least he acts like he doesn't care.
The ending section seems like Holden's memories and dreams of childhood innocence mixing together.
Whatever the intent behind the song it is completely brilliant. This is by far one of the best songs produced in the last 5 years. Sufjan is clearly a genius with music. |

| Rilo Kiley – With Arms Outstretched Lyrics

I don't usually like songs with group singing in it--they tend to come off a little too singing-by-the-campfire-esque for me--but I absolutely LOVE this song and everything in it. Rilo Kiley is so amazing. The fact that they have songs ranging from 'Always' to this song to "A Better Son/Daughter' just shows how talented they are. |

I think this song is about the narrator's huge overreaction to some event and then her embarassment at how she acted. It's almost sarcastic like she's using humour/cynicism as a defense against whoever is judging her. |

I took an existentialism class this spring and every time we talked about the Heideggerian experiments and principles of existentialism i started singing this line in my head:
Chatting not about Heidegger, but wine!
It's funny how before you know what it means you can just sing over a word thinking it's "high digger" and not ever question what a "high digger" might be |

this song is so beautiful. Her voice is surprisingly unique and lovely. The way she sings it is so wonderfully understated when so many other artists-thanks in great part to american idol-think that good singing is simply belting every note you can. She shapes it so perfectly. |
