I agree, it seems that no one knows that this song actually exists. I first heard it on that Paul Weller mix he made for Uncut Magazine and loved it right from the beginning. This is definitely a song that everyone in the world should hear at least once. Hopefully it will get the acclamation it so obviously deserves. |

No comments!!!!! Can't blame anyone, I just discovered this band a month ago. A truly OUTSTANDING band! Absolutely magical. |

milkegross, exactly right. If the punk and metal bands would have a fraction of Young's talent, they'd actually say something. This is as raw as it gets. Straight and to the point!!! |

I think everyone described this song accurately. I would just like to add that when they did record this album, they were pretty messed up. If one listens carefully, you can hear how the instruments are out of tune throughout the album. In a world of overproducing and digital touch ups, this is as real and raw as it gets. And that is why this album is a classic and will always be. |

"Semi-ok career"! OMFG! I'm speechless!!! Pee Wee, we must not be talking about the same person because no one in their right mind would say an ignorant comment like that!!! |

Anyone stop to wonder why it's always the "Right Wing" so called "Presidents" that ultimately screw up the world? Let's throw Nixon in there too!!! I guess that when you say you pray to God, people will let you drop bombs on anyone and anywhere in the name of "FREEDOM".
I know, I know.... This will start a debate, but oh well, the facts are pretty clear! WAKE UP!!! |

Yeah, I'm surprised on how nearly no one seems to be commenting on this band. It's a shame!... Then again, Britney Spears has a huge fan base... I guess that's a compliment to ELP! |

I agree with RogueLaw. That said, it is without a doubt a far superior album that is being put out by the majority of the so called "bands" "produce" nowadays! |

| Jackson Browne – The Pretender Lyrics

"Are you there?" is powerful. The pretender is alone and everyone else joined the herd being guided to the slaughter chambers and in the mist of all the chaos, everyone forgot about him/her. Ultimately, he ended up surrendering to a lifestyle that he didn't believe in only because everyone else was doing it. |

A lot of bad vibes here (werumm)! I can understand that some people need to have everything laid out for them to understand, but the best material is the things that are not so obvious up front. Take The Doors, nuff said. Finally, without Syd, there wouldn't have been any Pink Floyd. Give credit where credit is due! |

"Ordinary people, simply doing their jobs, and without any particular hostility on their part, can become agents in a terrible destructive process. Moreover, even when the destructive effects of their work become patently clear, and they are asked to carry out actions incompatible with fundamental standards of morality, relatively few people have the resources needed to resist authority."

My only comment is in regards to having people follow idiotic orders from clueless leaders (ie, Dubya Bush!) Pretty scary when you stop to think about it!!! |

If 3% of the world would have the intelligence and humanitarian impulse this man "had" (wrote this after he passed), we would be a better world without all the BS that is so overwhelmingly present in society at the present time.
Is the person labeled "crazy" the odd person, or is the person labeling someone as "odd or crazy" really sane themself or to stupid to really accept reality the way it's really meant to be experienced? |

I second that.
I can see this song played at the end of a movie while looking at a ravage scene of war and destruction! Kind of eerie in a sense! |

I have to agree with SaSaSushi. If this song is not about depression, I don't know what is!
"Well I looked my demons in the eye
Laid bare my chest said do your best destroy me
See I've been to hell and back so many times
I must admit you kinda bore me" -- Brilliant! |

I agree with rm413. To say that this album was picked out of a hat and has nothing to do with the tyranny of the Bush third Reich is complete nonsense. The irony here is that York is proving his point... when you say something in the media that is absolutely false but put a "spin" to it, the "little soldiers" will take whatever is said literally. Hence, 2+2=5!!!
Sorry if I'm being blunt here but come on people, "wake up!"... does this also look familiar? |

Personally, I'm getting a little Doors influance in this song. The way the lyrics are constructed and applied to the music is very similar to how Jim worked a song.
My opinion. Great song. |

inpraiseoffolly you are right about Pink Floyd. The only thing I would add is that the cynicism is in almost all of their songs but it is sometimes hard to pick up since even the cynicism is accurate since they put a spin on the essence of reality.
Pink Floyd is by far the best "band" ever, both musically and lyrically. I hope I am alive to hear another band that can be compared to them. There will be another one... I'm being optimistic. There is too much crap out there to think that good music is falling by the wayside. |

I agree with you sanscosm. Heaven forbid that a woman should speak her mind! I truly believe that if a man would have said that, it wouldn't have caused such an uproar (hence all the bands that have come out against this travesty).
Keep speaking your mind! If someone can't take it, well tough! I guess they aren't the one who later came out to say they relied on faulty intelligence, because they have some and used it at the time. No sense of jumping in the fire because your ignorant neighbors are doing it.
Good song. And please, women, keep speaking your minds. I'm a man and it pisses me off when idiots call women names because they said something that someone didn't like. INGORANCE!!! "I guess they missunderestimated us"!!! |
