The Shins – The Past And Pending Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song, and I think it's about just the anxiety and pain of love, specifically a lost love.

I think "foreign candle" means she's met someone else, and he can see it in her eyes, and notices the "news on her face"

"your name on my cast and my notes on your stay," shows how deeply he feels about her, staring at where she wrote on his cast, perhaps taking notes about what they did that day in a journal or something.

"doting on a crime" refers to the fact that he sees her leaving him is a crime, and these little notes and words are just reminders of that pain

"lose yourself in lines dissecting love," man I love this line. He just loiters the whole day through, just thinking about their love and how it is no longer there

The Dresden Dolls – Sex Changes Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I am repeatedly astounded by the Dresden Dolls' ability to arouse sympathy and empathy in a person regarding something as bizarre as gender reassignment and having an orgasm (first orgasm). It's amazing. You'll be listening to it and all of a sudden you feel really sad about it. Like in this song, it happens to me every time she starts singing "tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow"

The Dresden Dolls – Sex Changes Lyrics 17 years ago
I thought it was pretty obvious. A guy is getting a sex change. In my opinion it's not so much double meaning as it is about the implications of a man having to deal with both a sex change and the sexuality he has to get used to that accompanies that sex change.

First stanza: "Application," you have to apply to get a sex change, so they know you can pay for it and that you're not crazy, whatnot. He's getting his "clock" chopped off, can't get money back once he's been "ripped off." He's getting a sex change.

Second stanza: "The boys'll murder for it" (sex with what they think is a girl) but the neighbors know the truth. "Might be nice to look at", because obviously the guy wants to be a woman and wants "that" as part of him. and well, he'll feel pretty "hollow."

Third stanza: he can't try to play it off like he suddenly just turned into a girl, and he'll get more than he asked for without the "right protection" referring to both condoms and psychological preparation for male attraction.

Fourth stanza: Here's where Amanda warns him that his ability express his true sexuality will become an addiction, now that he can express it openly. he wants to "play" with this new "thing" but the sex will only satisfy for a while.

Fifth stanza: "boys will be girls with no warning," the suddenness and unexpectedness of a sex change. This one's more about the odd mentalities toward sex that people with a sex change have, with a different body than their mind is used to.

Sixth stanza: A little vulgar, the knife is coming to remove the male parts of him. And he will no longer hear the sound of it moving around (a little gross, but it's the Dresden Dolls). Then she sort of mimics a caring, supportive friend with the "of course I love you" but finishes with another warning that often one surgery leads to another and another

Seventh stanza: Most direct one yet, here she says "hurry up and stick it in," referring to having sex as a woman after the operation. But the sex will always be empty, and it will never end, not tomorrow, or tomorrow, or tomorrow.

Hope this helps, fellow song analyzers! There is little I enjoy more than dissecting a song like this. Well, there's playing music. Whatever. Hope it helps.

dude I don't like thinking about christianity or religion when I listen to this song. It's a beautiful song without thinking of jesus and his sacrifice.

Michael Jackson – Thriller Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with all the people supporting Michael Jackson and his music. They haven't even proven him guilty, and even if he IS guilty of child molestation, quit thinking that that's all Michael Jackson ever thinks about. Gay people don't constantly think about doing guys. Okay, so he had problems with plastic surgery. But who in the celebrity world hasn't? And all the allegations about his skin color are false; he didn't bleach his skin white, it changed color naturally, just like how some people's hair color changes as they age.
Michael Jackson is an amazing musician and entertainer, and I admire him for that.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 18 years ago
I am a Christian, but we can't let our faith blind us from seeing the true meaning of this song.

This song does talk about god, and about the glory of his experiences with the girl before she died, but it's also about the negative emotions he feels toward God when she's taken away.

Sufjan really is angry at God. Angry, frustrated, confused. And that's okay, because just like when children get angry at their parents and tell them they hate them, there are times when I get really angry at god and ask why he had to do something.

The part where he does mention Jesus is the last three lines, where he's saying "yes, he took our place and took the pain for us, but I still don't understand why he had to take her away and for that I am frustrated with him"

At the part where it says "he took my shoulders and he shook my face" it makes me think of God shaking Sufjan, desperately trying to get him to understand that he had to do it and not to be angry with him, sort of like when a parent has to hurt a child to teach him.

At the end, I really don't think Sufjan is questioning God anymore, or revelling in his grace or whatever. He just feels so helpless .

Regina Spektor – Consequence of Sounds Lyrics 19 years ago
I like this part:

Did you know that the gravedigger's still
Gettin' stuck in the machine
Even tough it's a whole other daydream.
It's another town it's another world,
Where the kids are asleep, where the loans are paid
And the lawns are mowed.
Whad'ya think?
All the gravediggers were gone?
Just cause one song is done
There’s always another one,
Waiting right around the bend,
Till this one ends,
Then it begins
Quickly, then it starts all over again.

Because I remember reading on Wikipedia that she writes alot about stuff in her head, and she's got an album called "Mary Meets the Gravediggers..." and the gravediggers thing must be a recurring image in her mind, and she's like, telling herself that it should be no surprise that when she finds another song, the gravediggers are back even though it's a different "daydream," and she's also showing how there's constantly songs playing in her head that she makes up.

This song makes me cry, I think it's just James Mercer's voice and the way he sings, like he's just so sad, I've cried to four of their songs for no reason. So Says I, Pink Bullets, Saint Simon, and New Slang

"Mercy's eyes are blue
And when she places them
In front of you
Nothing holds a
Roman candle to
The solemn warmth you feel

There's no measuring of it as nothing else is love"

This is the most amazing lines I've ever heard my whole life. Hearing it made me cry. It's just so pure and heartfelt.

I also think it has to do with the americans because they say "stab in the back" and I think that refers to how they worked together at first like columbus and then attacked them

Iron Maiden – Run To The Hills Lyrics 19 years ago
I think maiden was trying to make the point of white man boning the American Indians, and he didn't really care about the fact that the americans were blue and the europeans came across the sea. He is probably wrong, he's just saying that the indians lost really badly. To some white army.

Death Cab for Cutie – Crooked Teeth Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, figured it after third time listening. he's talking about how he accidentally got this girl to fall in love with him, and he doesn't want to be part of it, but he's too nice to dump her.

"I build you a home in my heart / with rotten wood that decayed from the start" - He doesn't love her, he had built a "special place" for her in his heart, but he didn't love her so it decayed ever since.

"You can't find nothing at all if there was nothing there all along" - he had no feelings for her, can't find love with someone if there wasn't any to begin with

"skyline looked like crooked teeth...devouring us both" - Not sure, my guess is that he felt like eventually they would both be devoured by grief, her because he doesn't love her, him because he has guilt.

"you're so cute when you slur in your speech / but they're closing the bar and they want us to leave" He thinks she's attractive and everything, but she's just not his type, he can't stay in the relationship

"I'm a war of head versus heart / It's always this way / my head is weak / my heart always speaks / to find out what it will say" - His heart always speaks because he doesn't want to hurt her feelings because he's too nice, even though his head's telling him that he doesn't love her.

"There were churches, theme parks and malls" - Most likely this is referring to the places they went to together, but "there was nothing there all along" - he still didn't feel any "magic" between them.
