Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip – Thou Shalt Always Kill Lyrics 18 years ago
This 'Thou Shall Not' theme has also been done by another band Subtle, on the same record label as Dan vs Scroob. Not sure which song came first, but I am sure that Subtle and Dan vs Scroob both rule respectively.

Was also unsure about the 'go into the woods with boyfriend's best friend, take drugs and cheat on him" / "thou shall not fall in love so easily" lines? Am I missing something here?

System of a Down – Science (feat. Arto Tunçboyacıyan) Lyrics 18 years ago
To say that science has 'failed' our world is an overstatement. Science has produced many options for us as a society. For example, the laser disc technology on which that System of a Down song was recorded, and the vibrations of pressure it emits that our brain interprets as sound. If we didn't have that kind of knowledge, we wouldn't be able to exploit it in the way that we do with 'music'.

I think the better message here is that faith, or consience perhaps, needs to be the companion in a scientific world. Otherwise we travel, stagnant, through a barcoded world of rationale. Science helps to provide fact, but I think that life, that is our society culture, delegates a search for truth and meaning. That's what makes us remarkable. And to denounce science is to reject the fundamental ability we have to do this in the first place.

People should embrace science a lot more. I recommend 'Unweaving the Rainbow' by Richard Dawkins.

Between the Buried and Me – Viridian Lyrics 18 years ago
I didn't really see this as an excuse at all but more a precede to set the atmosphere for the onsalught of 'White Walls'.

...besides, I reckon its the bass that is the highlight in this song!

Parkway Drive – Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em Lyrics 19 years ago
pride777, hey man, I am not a hardcore elite but I have been a huge fan and devotee of punk and hardcore music. It has been a learning curve for me particularly bands like minor threat, dead kennedies, good clean fun, propagandhi, ignite, kid dynamite, black flag and paint it black is a new favourite. Bands like these have taught me through their lyrics. For me hardcore is an aggressive noise with inspiration to oppose against impulses and conformities and defy the mainstream thought on a social level, through DIY-based music and culture. It has taught me to have an opinion and don’t be afraid to not conform. And yeah, Refused are definitely an awesome band and a new noise is definitely something to cherish (reminding that I have not ditched PWD’s music but only the lyrics). Jack Grisham of TSOL once said that N.W.A was ‘punk’ pertaining to defiance as a lifestyle or a method and more than just music. You could look at it that way as well. Hardcore punk from that I believe is more aggression and noise fuelled by dissent and rebellion to issues. My view isn’t gospel but this is what I see in hardcore, not ropes tied to triggers. So what I write could only be my opinion and this is it.
…but speaking of opposition, sir ckyalliance, why the hell can’t I give my personal comments/oppose? Isn’t that the whole point of critique? It’s what I’ve learned from punk and hardcore. I mean if everyone was just saying ‘yeah, PWD kicks ass’ then what’s the point of reading on? A bit of solidarity and that’s it. I’m not attention seeking at all, no one here is, maybe if I came on and said ‘PWD are shit, end of story’ but I didn’t, and I’ve even said that the music and shows are awesome. So let people debate it. I am stating my opinions and I am totally open to hear opposition from people. To level with you I was pretty harsh at times so hey, I’ll keep that harshness to myself then. But what do you think about it? Tell me your thoughts. You can call me a loser or whatever but why not give your point of view instead?

Good Clean Fun – A Song For The Ladies Lyrics 19 years ago
This is absolutely awesome. Good clean fun say exactly what I feel. So many counts of 'floor punching macho pabulum' (Propagandhi's words) in hardcore and it still hasn't changed. And sexism in hardcore just doesn't fit. Hardcore is already on a great track so let's keep it clean. Good Clean Fun are one of the best voices in hardcore punk.

mr kearney1,
indeed i have read and even quoted 'romance is dead' if you didn't notice. it pretty much denounces the lyrics they were already writing (as quoted) which is pretty hard to take seriously. if gw bush suddenly said that his troops were out of iraq and that iraq is free of the US, wouldn't you still think of the imperialism that happened in the first place and how fucked up it was?
although ultimately, to be fair, it is a turn for the better and perhaps they can turn to more relevant topics. i mean, isn't that what punk and hardcore was all about? rebelling against the mainstream thought? not conforming?

Against Me! – Cliché Guevara Lyrics 19 years ago
music and fashion are the easiest places to proclaim support for activism. che guevara is iconic for this because the t-shirts are everywhere and people just see it as a mnemonic for rebellion. i see this song as pointing that out directly. it's an easy place to hide.

oh yeah and the anti-suicide message from that interview with winston mccall. i think the fact the magazine is called 'death before dishonour' is a bit ironic then?

Parkway Drive – Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em Lyrics 19 years ago
an excellent argumentive there ImCoolLikeYou, my views are now completely inverted.
but just to keep you angry and culturally prejudiced here's some example's i've pulled out:
"Choking on our misery.
Splinters of failure cut like glass.
But I’ll put it to rest tonight in the hope that maybe I wont have to wake."

"Another nigth wasted wishing you away
Now im cut, im cut at the wrists
but i still cant kill the pain"

and then contradict yourself with a statement like:

"So serenade her with your last pathetic suicide love song."

THAT'S why hardcore is naive. i'm not saying all hardcore is naive but as someone whose been listening to it for a while and a dedicated fan of the social and political messages that have come from hardcore.
i could throw in some words about the fact that punk and hardcore are slowly cutting off the whole 'DIY' ethic that is like the crucial point of the culture but i'll keep it simple.

is this song about sock puppets? come on, it must be about sock puppets. once you take the socks off the hands, they're all socks. but when they're on the hand they are all of different size and circumference because all hands are different. the only thing wrong with this song is that they seem to forget those monkey toed socks. tsk tsk.

Propagandhi – Fedallah's Hearse Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't really understand the moby dick reference?! From what i gather the song rejects bands, writers, thinkers that use politics for financial gain. I once thought it was symbolising that in the end the heathens all end up lynched. Fedallah spent years trying to catch Moby Dick so I guess his aspirations are buried with him. ??

Yawn. Every band goes on about love issues and create these metaphorical death scenarios. It never changes. What has hardcore become? It's so goddamn naive these days. The music and live show is great but yeesh, ditch the stupid lyrics. And stop advocating suicide, it's pathetic.

Every Time I Die – Kill the Music Lyrics 19 years ago
Alright, what i get from this song is a juxtaposition between a bitter love story and the advent of punk/hardcore creeping into the mainstream and making independant bands into rock stars, including Every Time I Die. Ignited by the first line "Stutter step to the beat of a disparaged lover" and then outlined in lines like "There's no difference between being holy (major label rock star) and alone (independant), That's why I'm eagerly fleeing the scene". Seriously, love songs are nothing short of a punk rock song nowadays. It's all we hear, we've basically traded in the genuity of punk and hardcore for the dollar. So, go figure, the best way to show our ignorance is to weave a love scenario. He's turning himself in and pulling the tablecloth with him. Keith has played the rock star; he "knows the strippers real name" and this song seems to portray his want to for those small gigs they played back in Buffalo. Hence, his venture into the mainstream is a broken love story.
So essentially, there is a portrayal of 'fake' hardcore bands as well as a love story. There's an irony being incinuated and Keith isn't afraid to self satirise.
