Stars Of Track And Field – With You Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh, of course, the beginning of the chorus could be taken as a full sentence of itself... "I was with you when you were down, to see you again," which (ignoring its run-on-idness) would mean that the person addressed was "down" to "see" themselves, which implies some sort of self-discovery, apparently self-discovery that the speaker witnessed.
I realized that a couple hours ago...

Stars Of Track And Field – With You Lyrics 18 years ago
Of course, the lyricist would know the most about the intention of the song. I really love it, myself, partly because of the intractable nature of the lyrics. But here, let me tie myself in a knot trying to analyze them:

The song's essentially about a relationship, right? All the "I"s and "yous" make that obvious. Is this relationship romantic? Probably, because of the mantra about sleeping in the second verse.
Okay, so we've got that straight. So, the first verse is pretty clear-cut: it's about the past, apparently a happy one that's been lost.
The chorus throws a screw in the workings. "I was with you when you were down"... okay, so the speaker helped the subject out of some sort of depression. That's *got* to be a valid interpretation, but then the next line has to be taken as part of the "down down down" line too, which means the third line goes like this "Down to see you again." So, aside from the obvious interpretation, maybe that means the speaker has gone "down" (aka become depressed), which results in his meeting the subject (who's possibly still "down")
Okay, then. The next lines are okay, but the last in the chorus is totally wacko. Who does the subject wish was "here"? It can't be the speaker, because the speaker is already "here." Someone else, then? Or maybe the subject doesn't *know* the speaker is "here"?
squeak. who knows?

The second verse is pretty obviously about somebody who cares but doesn't want to ("don't cry" is directed at self, and "your eyes are made of stone" is directed at the subject, then), or doesn't care but is talking to somebody else about letting go.

Eh? That's all I can say.

Pete Yorn – Sense Lyrics 19 years ago
dunno, but i love "is something wrong with me? I showed you things you never dreamed of." detaching them from the context of the song, those words are just so expressive-- disappointment in himself, and perhaps in the person they're being directed at, that he or she didn't appreciate those things that he showed.

Keane – She Has No Time Lyrics 19 years ago
I have no idea, but let me propose yet another possibility. What if some of the lyrics are 'lying to yourself?' Whenever people do that, it's always very confusing, but it *might* make some sort of sense. Try it out--

"And she can hardly breathe without you"

.. yeah ok it doesn't make any sense. Nvermind. I think it's some guy singing to another guy about how some girl, though she feigns indifference, really is in love with him. end of story.

wishing people would write songs a little clearer for us poor overanalyzers.

Bob Marley and the Wailers – Could You Be Loved? Lyrics 19 years ago
I think Marley is talking about the whole Jamaican human rights thing, definitely, but sometimes the songwriter's intention has little to do with what one *gets* from a song. Part of the genius of artists like Marley is that their work is timeless-- this song will still have meaning (to those who put the effort into listening to it) hundreds of years from now. Just because it isn't exactly what Marley was talking about, the fact that the song can be interpreted differently isn't bad.

I love the whole "Could you be loved?" thing; what everyone's saying about its meaning is totally perfect, and so sadly true. It has special meaning in my life.. but you don't want to hear about *that*.

The part I love most about the song is the way Marley drops in his verses. "We've got a mind of our own/ So go to hell if what you're thinkin' isn't right/Love would never leave us alone/ In the darkness there must come out to light" And everything else. Again, even though he's talking about something totally different, this stuff could apply to almost *anything.*

love.

p.s. jorge_lazaro5, you're right. I have no idea why it's that, except maybe that it's harder to be loved than to love? I don't know, I've never had such a problem myself.. *hem* anyway. and isn't it harder to love someone unconditionally than to be the subject of such love anyway? confusion.
I have no idea.

America – Sister Golden Hair Lyrics 19 years ago
Awesome song.
One thing to add though--
Why does he call her "*Sister* Golden Hair?"
And why would he want to make it Sunday anyway?
Yes, the altar thing could be interpreted as simply his reluctance to marry, but I'm not sure.
My mom says that she must be a nun, which *would* explain a lot-- make it all a lot more romantic too, him professing his love, and in such beautiful terms, to someone who has made vows against intimacy. "I ain't ready for the altar" -- instead of being interpreted as his reluctance at the thought of marriage, maybe his reluctance at the thought of devoting himself to the priesthood?

I'm not saying it's what the song really is about, but somehow I feel I'd like it better if it *were* about that.

Incubus – Beware! Criminal Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow, well I came here hoping to be enlightened by you superior minds of the Internet, but I guess nobody really put much thought into this song at all. Of course, I see (hear?) everything through my own, decidedly not rose-tinted haze, but I think I have at least *something* to offer to this discussion.

First of all, it seems like this is definitely a song about an inequal relationship-- lover, friend, who knows? I would tend toward romantic relationship, especially with the reference to bed at the very beginning, but I'm not sure if it really matters in any case.

The speaker is obviously expressing contempt for whoever's being spoken to, and to an extent himself as well ("A swimmer who has seen a shark/ I should really be more wary of the water"), and I want to say this is a song of disillusionment and goodbye ("Today, I walk/ There's nothing here left for me but empty promises/ And the thought of all the things I'm never getting back"). He's been hurt, and he's not going to deal with it anymore-- he's leaving, still almost incredulous in his question to her: "Did you think I wouldn't notice?/ Did you really think I wouldn't care?"

For some reason, for the longest time I interpreted the "You came, you saw, you conquered" as some guy getting totally O.O by some girl. "And I'm left here bleeding/ Oh, what went wrong?" (He thought everything was going to work out, but it didn't)

"Yeah, I'm down/ But not out, and far from done/ Hey all! Beware Criminal"
As a final gesture, he's trying to warn people away from this person who did him wrong.

p.s. dusk_view, i don't know what the hell you're talking about, and I'm not sure if you do either. In the lines you quoted, he's obviously not talking literally-- especially here: "You stole my glow, a seasoned thief". He means she stole his heart, or if it's about a friendship, just maybe his trust.

p.p.s. I think he's still partway in love with her-- he's not *just* realizing that she's "not going anywhere", he's known this for a while, but she's still "beautiful."

wow i went on forever. this was entertaining.

Coldplay – A Whisper Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song. I was totally surprised to read the first comment-- "shallow?" I was getting all warmed up to proving them all wrong, and then "silver_bs" destroyed my opportunity. *sigh* the sorrows of life.

Anyway, I think the whole song has this awesome feel to it-- that's the first thing that drew me in. It's not about love-- silver's totally right about the lyrics thing, someone needs to get that fixed. It's this guy, trying to figure out his place in the world-- realizing that everything, even himself, even his questions (answered or otherwise), are only a whisper, soon to die out and certainly not to be missed.

The Flaming Lips – Are You a Hypnotist?? Lyrics 19 years ago
Awesome song. I love the way it shows the confusion and overwhelming feeling of giving yourself completely away to someone who will probably use you. I'm not really sure if that's what was intended by the artist, but that's sure what I got from it-- especially in the last stanza (i know that term's only approprate for poems, but..), where he realizes that really, his feelings of belonging were totally out of place. He saw her, thought he knew her (which, I believe, is a huge part of love.. maybe that's only my experience though), but now he realizes that really, everyone around him is together and he is the outsider.

I think the most beautiful part about the song is the way he poses his question, though. "Are you some kind of hypnotist?" He still thinks she's amazing (consider what comes to mind when you think of hypnotism), but he just can't believe what "her powers" have made him do. And at the beginning of the song, he tells us that she keeps "tricking" him-- that even once he feels himself finally loose of her spell, he is immediately caught right back up into the rush.

I love songs about love that never actually use the word.
