Sounds like this track is about the break-up of a relationship however, that's just me superimposing some idea of mine--an idea that the lyrics appear to suggest without actually putting into words.
When viewed through the lens of a relationship, the lyrics suggest that the separation that the narrator has gone through with his/her supposed partner has elicited feelings of freedom, complacency, and relief. Such feelings can certainly be attributed to end of unpleasant or problematic relationship.
Whether or not this song is most accurately viewed through this lens is a good question. Some other, less plausible, ideas that this song could be about are: racial segregation, anti-society, and liberty. |

This song is totally sweet, I really love Pat singing! This sounds like a track that could fit well on Maladroit. I recommend listening to some music by The Special Goodness if you like this song. That's the name of Pat's side-project band. |

I feel like that the past few comments completely miss the importance of the words "and why i still believe it / and why i need it / and what the pharisees don't see." Pharisees were a ancient sect of jews which was reestablished after the destruction of the Second Temple whose beliefs have been the foundation of the several forms of modern Judaism. (see wikipedia for more)
Knowning that David Bazan is a fervent Christian, and that christianity segments away from judaism on the matter of the appearance of the messiah, IMO the song is about David attempting to a convince non-Christian why he holds true to his religion and Jesus. "Every stupid struggle" seems refer to the strife between religions of opposing view, probably applying to less-modern times.
Then again, I'm basing my argument on only one, albeit strong, line that might just be a turn of phrase David throws out there from time to time. |
