I first heard this song after he's passed away. And I don't think this song is REALLY about what it means to me, I think everyone here has done a very good job figuring it out. There are a lot of parts to this song that remind me of my brief stay at the mental resort in the lovely town where I live. I was just a normal suicidal guy, and everyone else was far more batty from what I could tell. Seeing stuff, thinking the world is after them and all. So I relate this song to that time in my life, though to Elliot I'm sure it was something much worse than a shitty weekend in a mental ward. |

I have no idea what this song means to me. But back when I was a senior in high school, I went to France, bought a discman, and I bought the version of this album with this song. And I was totally blown away. In the liner notes, it credits someone with playing the "keychain" which I thought was pretty groovy. |

I heard ages ago that Beck's grandpa would make sculpture out of trash. Not sure where I heard that. But I figured that the bottles and cans were happy that they weren't just being pitched into a garbage can...they were being used to make something nice. Kind of a rebirth. Of course, it's rough making the rest of that theory fit into the rest of the song. I think the sex thing sounds much more plausible. |

Deciphering beck is a tall order, one which I'm not about to attempt. But I remember when I was a younger man, about 16, 17 years old, I was totally into this album. And then I heard a song that he sampled for this one, a Them (featuring Van Morrison) version of It's All Over Now Baby Blue by Bob Dylan. And I said, "Hey! I know that song...kind of" I would go on to love Van Morrison, Dylan, and Beck of course, so it was nice to have this guy tie that all up. Burro is also a good version of this, done in spanish to Mariachi music. Sounds real nice. As to the meaning, I think Beck has a unique way of making ideas so vague, that anyone can understand it, or no one can understand it, or both. He's quite the songwriter...let's you figure it out, if you can. The real meaning is pretty much locked up in his head I think. |

Lord only knows what this song means, and I'm not worried about impressing folks here with any knowledge. It's a great song, great sound. And since no one will ever read this, I'll just BS my way through it. It's about life. And struggle. And yeah. Anyone have real input because my well of that has clearly run dry. Hope someone posts! |

I rarely listen to this one, because I think most of the songs past I Can't Reach You are pretty weak, by Who standards, but I did notice that the end of this one sounds just like Sparks from Tommy. I thought that was kind of odd. But The Who rocks, and that's what really matters. |

I think that he never really knew the girl at all. He just kind of fancied her, based on a chance meeting, or something. But then when he looks around for her, he thinks he sees her, but often doesn't. And he blames his incorrect identification on her, and not himself. Just how I've always seen it. Probably wrong, but that's my idea. |

A great song, I must say. I think the song is fairly straightforward, but I could be wrong. Who knows? I didn't write it. As for the stuttering, Shazbon has the story I've always heard. That it was representing a young man so angry he could hardly get his words out. I dated a girl who was like that. Couldn't talk without stuttering when she was pissed off at me. Always made me think of this one. |
