Mark Knopfler – What It Is Lyrics 19 years ago
Whoops, missing line. Right before the part about the Scottish piper, there's a line that goes "The garrison sleeps in the citadel, with the ghosts and the ancient stones."

This is one of my favorites of his. I know everyone says that what people really want to hear from DS and Mark Knopfler is awesome guitar playing, but I really like his voice too, and his voice goes well with this song.

Loreena McKennitt – The Highwayman Lyrics 19 years ago
For all of you that say that she "only left out a few verses," remember that one of these verses is the verse about Tim the Ostler...the verse that makes the appearance of the British make sense and amplifies the tragedy inherent in the poem by several orders of magnitude.

Here is the verse...it is the fourth verse in the original version, right before the stanza that starts out "one kiss, my bonny sweetheart." The emphasis is mine.

"And dark in the old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim the ostler listened; his face was white and peaked;
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
BUT HE LOVED THE LANDLORD'S DAUGHTER,
THE LANDLORD'S RED-LIPPED DAUGHTER,
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say..."

One is supposed to infer that Tim, who is just a touch mental, snitched to the redcoats so that the highwayman would be arrested and Tim would have Bess all to himself. This makes the poem that much more tragic, because in trying to win Bess, Tim ends up indirectly causing her death.

Dire Straits – On Every Street Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought he was looking for a girlfriend who had killed herself - I guess I took the part about how "she threw herself under my wheels" literally. I always pictured that verse as taking place at the funeral, and the man who was driving the truck is stumbling through a semi-apology.

I think the part about how he's looking for her face on every street is about how he's talking to people she knew and trying to sort of retrace her steps and figure out why she killed herself. I think some proof of this is the line "and every victory has a taste that's bittersweet." Lots of people kill themselves and their family never finds out exactly why, and every piece of information they get hold of just leads the way to more impossible questions...either way, even if you find out exactly why they killed themselves, they'll still be gone.

The guitar solo at the end is genius...it's perfect for this song, even though it's very up-tempo and lively compared to the rest of the song (sort of like the end of Where Do You Think You're Going). If you could somehow hear someone searching, this is what it would sound like...if that makes sense.

Dire Straits – Expresso Love Lyrics 19 years ago
I definitely like the phrase "espresso love." Here is how to understand the true meaning of the metaphor:

1.) Get a job at a cafe.
2.) Be scheduled for a morning shift.
3.) Come in, open up, drink a double shot of espresso.
4.) In a half an hour, drink another single shot (or a double if you are feeling brave.)
5.) Repeat step four every half hour until you feel you truly grasp the concept of a proper espresso buzz.

While much more temporary, it is distressingly similar to the feeling you get in the beginning of a relationship. The only downside is that straight espresso tastes like a tiny civilization having a chemical war on the back of your tongue. Oh well.

KMFDM – Mysterious Ways (U2 cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
A great cover...even if it sounds like something you'd hear playing in a strip joint. It's similar enough so as to be instantly recognizable, but definitely done in KMFDM's own style...exactly what a cover should be.

Dire Straits – Heavy Fuel Lyrics 19 years ago
The only possible theory that I can come up with is that this is a commentary on certain aspects of male society...a pastiche, if you will. Strong evidence of this is the line that says "I love the babes, don't get me wrong / hey, that's why I wrote this song."

Another theory is that it is just a song about booze and sex and cigarettes. Occam's Razor dictates that the latter must be true, but I'm not so sure.

Dire Straits – Private Investigations Lyrics 19 years ago
To me this song is about a PI that finds out that his girlfriend/wife is having an affair while he is going about his business investigating another case. He's staked out in front of a suspects house, maybe, and he sees the suspect come out of the front door with the PI's girlfriend.

But that's just me.

Dire Straits – Twisting By The Pool Lyrics 19 years ago
Chris, I always figured that this song was written for some reason like the one you stated.

Still, this song - and its inclusion in their compilation album - makes me want to kick puppies.
