| KMFDM – Son Of A Gun Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| "Shit for brains-born to kill" is a bad combination, obviously, and it's not what you'd say about somebody you admired. What's described in the song is devastation on a massive scale and it's the result of this rabidly violent moron who thinks he's hot shit and a force for good when in reality he's just doing irreparable harm. It could very easily be referring to the U.S. or militarism in general, and that would be consistent with the anti-war views expressed in another of the band's songs, "Stars and Stripes." | |
| Pink – Dear Mr. President (feat. Indigo Girls) Lyrics | 19 years ago |

The first lines of this song...."Let's pretend we're just two people/and you're not better than me/I'd like to ask you some questions/if we can speak honestly"....are the ones that resonated with me the most. This president, moreso than most politicians, has avoided conversations with those who might disagree with him. Pink's request is not unreasonable, it's even politely phrased, but George W. Bush seemingly refuses to talk to anybody unless they suck up to him and tell him they like what he's doing. That's not to say he's never engaged in debates or taken questions from journalists who worked for media outlets besides Fox News; he has, but not very often. For the most part, Bush talks at the American people without giving them a chance to talk back. This president's inaccessibility has rubbed many people the wrong way, rightly so it can be argued. When something you do makes so many people unhappy, ignoring them or dismissing their concerns as trivial isn't real courteous. "What kind of father might hate his own daugther if she were gay?" I won't presume that I know exactly what Bush's feelings towards gay people are, but he hasn't done them any favors, speaking out against same-sex marriage as he did. No way to know whether he did so because he had a genuine moral objection to the idea or whether it was because Karl Rove told him "you'll lose the gay vote but you'll get the Christian vote, and there are a lot more Christians living here than gays!" Either way, it was a rotten thing to do. "You've come a long way, from whiskey and cocaine." It's no secret that he had a drinking problem, and while there's no solid proof that he snorted cocaine I wouldn't put it past him during his days of excess. If he ever used it I wouldn't hold it against him any more than I hold Clinton's marijuana use against him, whether he inhaled or not. The bottom line is that the guy had a problem with substance abuse, with the actual substances not really relevant. He apparently cleaned himself up and found God, becoming a born again Christian and renouncing all the excesses of his former life. While this may be good for his health, it doesn't seem to be good for the country. He's no longer a drunk, but now he's all self-righteous and holier-than-thou and thinks that God's on his side and that everybody should live by the Bible. Many times when I've heard him speak he's sounded condescending to me, as though he thinks he's found the proper way to live and we're all just clueless children who need him to tell us how to live, what to do and what not to do. When it comes to something such as stem cell research, rather than look at the issue objectively and consider the pros and cons, he simply forbids it because his religion tells him that the minute a sperm enters an egg it becomes a human life and is sacred. IMHO, he's exchanged one evil for another, he's gone from being an out of control party animal to being an uptight, zealous control freak. The whole "hard work" part of the song is, from what I know, absolutely true. While this guy's life may not have been completely stress-free, there is one thing he has never had to cope with: poverty. He comes from money, and whenever he failed at something his father or one of his father's friends was there to bail him out. There was never any danger of George W. Bush becoming a homeless person, and as such it's difficult for me to imagine that he has much sympathy for poor people. As a matter of fact, the Republican party as a whole has never had much sympathy for poor people. Many Republicans believe that homeless people are just too lazy to go out and look for a job, when that's simply not true. Overall I like these lyrics. They're better-written than those of most of the anti-Bush songs I'm familiar with. You could say that Bush-bashing is in right now, and that Pink is beating a dead horse. I don't think that's the case, I think she's just pissed off and felt the need to say something instead of staying silent. You go down the list of people Bush has alienated during his time in office: pro-choice people, people with terminal diseases which stem cell research might one day provide a cure for, gay people who want to marry, people who believe that starting a war is wrong since it's what we were told all our lives (Hitler was evil cause he started a war, Saddam was evil cause he started a war, etc.), people who believe that everybody has the right to a lawyer and a trial, people who believe torture is evil, people who believe in privacy, people who care about the environment, and I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting...this president's policies have made life worse for all of them and the more public outcry there is, the better. Maybe if enough people make enough noise he'll get the message. Oh, also, somebody said "...would rather him put armor and better weapons to protect our troops over in iraq then give the homeless $5.00 a week for food or some crap like that" If you want to protect those troops then get them out of the war zone and back to North America, but if that's not feasible, then reverse the tax cuts. Bush cut taxes, including taxes on the wealthy people who can afford to lose money and still live in luxury, and then started a war. If the troops don't have good equipment or enough supplies, a big part of the reason is because Bush cut taxes. As a result, the government doesn't have enough money to equip their troops properly. |
