this was playing on my itunes last night and it really struck me, and i just found out that one of heath ledger's last projects was making a music video for this song... i know it might seem trite, but it seems like one of those things tying everything together and making some sense of tragedy. and the mood of the song epitomizes it completely.

in the npr world cafe studio session "the weakerthan's: canadian content" Samson talks about the song, and Edward Hopper's influence on him, and how he wanted to do a whole album tribute but realized it would be pretty bad so stuch with Night Windows and Sun in an Empty Room. this song was the song my mom played when i was growing up, so i always connected to it through nostalgia, but now, having discerned the meaning of the lyrics, i love it more than ever. i love the allegory here; it's sharp and intelligent. and i love the humor in the lyrics -- humor is often the sharpest, most effective criticism. its a clever look at intolerance, relevant 400 years ago and perhaps even more so now.

i think it's about fear of your potential, as a person and in a relationship -- and the insecurities that cause such fear and hesitation. she captures the fear of living, and the fear of true commitment. How can a person expose his/herself so completely and vulnerably if he or she is not comfortable with who he or she is? of course this is only one component of the song -- and an obvious one at that -- but it's one that really affects me, and that i can relate to. this is the song i sing in the shower most often.. :)

the analysis of this song here has moved me, so thank you. i had bought the tyranny of distance and listened to it after my grandpa died, and it soothed me so much. after knowing the meaning behind the words, (as well as the accurate lyrics) it means so much more, and it oddly fits the circumstances that connected me to the music.

I can judge him by his actions, which include giving money to Hamas. He is anti-semitic and has supported terrorism. Yet the purpose of my comment was to set aside any personal feelings and acknowledge the beauty of his music. Thus, rather than being judgmental or narrow-minded, I am being open-minded, by listening and enjoying music for the sake of music, rather than disregarding it because I disagree with the singer. The song is brilliant, and I admire Cat as a musician.

i love how every rilo kiley song contains some profound deeper meaning -- the lyrics are figurative language-- and i agree with " itsmynameforyou" on the meaning of the song... her sincere voice is what really gets me. how through her singing and the lyrics you can feel how uncomfortable and real she is
