| Tracy Chapman – Fast Car Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is so sad and beautiful. In the beginning it starts out as optimistic and hopeful, the person can truly start a new life for herself, her circumstances can improve, and she can be happy and successful. However, at the end of the song she finds herself being dragged down again hopelessly. The story's basic message is about trying to free and improve yourself as well as escaping your current life. |

My favorite Lawrence Arms song. I think this is about being emotionally dead and unhappy and wanting to change, but being too fearful to do so. |

This song is fucking hilarious, I love it. Basically what we all think of everytime we go 'shopping'. |

| Nelly Furtado – Turn Off The Light Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Generally I think this song is about putting on a tough, independent, strong, 'I don't need or depend on anybody or anything' persona in front of everyone. But when you're alone with yourself and your thoughts, your insecurities, fears, and desires that you keep hidden rise to the surface. |

| Suzanne Vega – Tom's Diner Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I remember watching a TV show on VH1 mentioning that the song was about isolation. If you wanna look at it deeply, it seems to be expressing the loneliness, isolation, and alienation the narrarator experiences in modern society in the day to day grind. But if you want it on a simple level, it's about someone in a coffee shop (obviously). Everyone has a different interpretation. |

| The Meg And Dia Band – Indiana Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Meg said that the song was inspired by George Sand's novel 'Indiana'. Here's a summary of the novel, it pretty much fits/explains the song as well: It is a realist, idealist, and romantic novel that deals with the problems of marriage in post Napoleon France. In the story an attractive, young Creole from Reunion Island named Indiana marries a much older man named Colonel Delmare, who had been a Lieutenant in Napoleon's army, and who was a successful industrialist. Indiana does not love him, and searches for someone who will love her fully and passionately. |

WishingForYou's post is pretty explanatory, the band posted that explanation on their myspace blog. Meg also said that the song was inspired by GEorge Steinbeck's novel 'East of Eden'. |

omfglissahpwns got it pretty much head on, the band had that explanation posted on their myspace page. However, I did uncover this as well: On inspiration: “I write my songs about anything that can make me laugh, or cry, or really happy, which would usually be one of the two "L's": love and literature. If I'm not writing songs, or playing the guitar, I will most likely be found reading. I love English or British Literature written in the 18th and 19th centuries. You know, really old, classy fairy-tale stuff. Also, any American Literature from the 20's. I love Fitzgerald, Salinger, and Steinbeck. //"Monster", the first single from Something Real, is about East of Eden written by Steinbeck.// So, it is indeed inspired by 'East Of Eden'. |

| Everlast – What It's Like Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
My interpretation of it is how people make judgements upon the supposed 'dregs of society' (homeless people, drug dealers, etc.), when we are truly making shallow and ignorant judgements on people in challenging and tough conditions and circumstances and how, if we were put in their shoes, we would be fragile and weak and have a better understanding of how difficult the situation is. Basically, we shouldn't criticize other's choices and circumstances until we have a better understanding of said choices and circumstances. |

| Streetlight Manifesto – A Better Place, A Better Time Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Well, the meaning is pretty obvious. Annie, a lonely suicidal woman/girl is contemplating taking her own life. Her male friend (significant other?) is urging her not to. annie says "the saddest day i came acrosss was when i learned that life goes on without me" (without me) It seems like Annie is going through some existensial crisis. She is lonely and feels like she is without someone to support (but the narrarator is obviously willing to support her "someday you will say "that's it, that's all" but i'll be waiting there with open arms to break your fall") I love when the song starts getting faster in tempo during the first 'annie's tired of forgetting about today and always planning for tomorrow (tomorrow)' Streetlight is amazing :D |

| Streetlight Manifesto – We Are The Few Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"i never wanted this, no one ever wanted this but they gave it to you so you might as well be proud of it i don't know where we went wrong all i know is i got to do something right" To put it vaguely, I think this song might be about a mistake has been made by either one person or a group of people. The constant references to rights, wrongs, "I never wanted this, no one ever wanted this", "I don't know where we went wrong all I know now is I gotta do something right". I love Streetlight, and how some of their songs are an enigma. |

| Thursday – War All The Time Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
There's an endless amount of ways a song can be interpreted. Don't put other people's personal interpretation of art down, please. Anyways, if you watch the video, it helps make sense of this song. Geoff seemed wrote it about his life growing up in New Jersey and the suicides he experienced. If you watch the video it talks about our personal wars at home. You can see it however you want to see it. As personal 'wars' and battles we go through throughout our lives, Geoff's life in New Jersey, growing up. I can see how someone could see this song being about actual war and current political affairs, someone else mentioned nuclear war/power [three mile-island, nightmares on TV, h-bomb explosion, burning/fires] I think this is a beautiful song. |

| Hilary Duff – Play With Fire Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Is 'and I decide, only he can play with fire... ' a euphemism for 'only Joel Madden can fuck me silly'? | |
| Alkaline Trio – Blue In The Face Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This is by far one of my favorite Alkaline Trio songs. To me this song is about a drug addication (bad coke habit) that ruins a relationship. The addiction made him 'No longer fun, and so far from interesting.' and everything spirals downward from there. I love the acoustic sound of this :) |

| Anti-Flag – Mind The G.A.T.T. Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Very powerful message of unity here, one of my favorite anti-flag songs :) | |
| Gregory and the Hawk – Boats and Birds Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
To me this song has many ways it can be interpreted. It sounds a lot like a parent with a lot of love for their child letting them move out/be an adult, and because they love them so much they're letting them go. And I agree with others-there does seem to be some grief present, maybe it's mourning the death of someone very close to them and just asking for something to remember them by. The recurrent theme here is 'if you truly love something, you let it go.', and that can apply to a lot of things. For me it had a very personal meaning, it's a very beautiful song (very sad at the same time) and the only one that can bring me to tears :) |
