The Clash – Jail Guitar Doors Lyrics 10 years ago
@[Baller:4764] Sorry, but no. Sandy Pearlman produced Give 'Em Enough Rope, while Bill Price produced I Fought the Law. It was not recorded during the same sessions as GEER.

The Clash – Car Jamming Lyrics 10 years ago
Combat Rock was written as a tribute to Beat poetry, nothing on it more so than Car Jamming. Basically, they got stuck in a traffic jam in New York City and started writing beat poetry, in a jam session. This song is the result. They even went so far as to get Allen Ginsberg, the most famous beat poet of all, to add some vocals later in the album. I feel somewhat soiled after hearing Ginsberg growl the Heart Katra at the end of Ghetto Defendant. As far as the meaning of the lyrics of Car Jamming, it is about inequality and injustice in the everyday life they saw around them while stuck in the car.

The Clash – Something About England Lyrics 10 years ago
@[Dilling3r:4387] Yeah, It's WWI. Followed by WWII. They call it the 14-18 war as a cultural convention, as we call it WWI. There is no War of 1418.

Marcy Playground – Sex And Candy Lyrics 10 years ago
I just read a story on Yahoo about 90's songs that were secretly about meth, and this was #4 on the list. Over 75% of the posts on this site make more sense than that idiot's interpretation. But playing the link was worthwhile. This was a good song then and it's still good today. Dig it.

Blue Öyster Cult – Then Came The Last Days Of May Lyrics 12 years ago
This song has a basis in fact from people the band knew or heard of. Mostly they were trying to portray that the summer of love was over. You no longer get a smiling hippy handing you a free hit of acid so that you too can know this joy; instead you get the shaft and a shallow grave. Black Sabbath and a few others tried to convey this, but they were considered unique and not an accurate reflection of the way things really were. At the time, the only people who took Iggy Pop seriously were those who were just as messed up as he was. It is worthwhile to note that the sun sets in the West. In ancient history, that direction was known for the sun's death every night and therefore the location of the underworld. Never discount BOC's ability to wax esoteric.

The Clash – Up in Heaven (Not Only Here) Lyrics 13 years ago
This is not only the most haunting tune done by the Clash, it probably is the most haunting in rock n roll history.

The Clash – Up in Heaven (Not Only Here) Lyrics 13 years ago
I saw a PBS program on the events this song was written about. The song was mentioned in the program. Towers were very cheaply built to house the working poor and get them out of the downtown districts of London. They were criticized as being ugly and soulless and it took no time at all before that atmosphere soaked into the people and the towers degraded. Despite warnings that the towers were unsound, they were not declared unfit for habitation and were not fixed up. Then one morning, the roof gave in on one of them. The roof fell into the top floor which brought that floor down onto the next which in turn took out the one below it like falling dominoes. Everyone in the tower at the time was killed, no survivors. "By the bourgeois clerks who bear no guilt." Even though a tragedy could be predicted, nobody was willing to take responsibility for it, and as always, the workers pay for it.

Joe Strummer wrote this song, imagining what it was like for Mick Jones as he grew up in his middle class, white bread bubble of existence.

Blue Öyster Cult – Astronomy Lyrics 19 years ago
John got a lot of it correct. I was surprised that you caught the dog and Sirius reference.
The four winds bar refers to a compass rose on a map, the one that Carrie reads, specifically, because it is ancient and contains directions to a dark mirror hidden on another continent.
Desdinova was born to a world in turmoil, trained at the hands of madmen and turned loose on the world to realize Imaginos, the beginning and the end. In this story cycle, it all comes to fruition in WWII, which is not mentioned in this song, of course. Astronomy is the story of Desdinova getting his bearings and starting a long journey with his friends to find this "dark mirror."
Sandy Pearlman had this song and many others in the Imaginos cycle running through his head since the early 60's. He wrote it out, and BOC used it on their third album, as well as Subhuman, which is another part of the cycle. It appears as the song "Blue Oyster Cult" on Imaginos. The Imaginos album of the 80's was worked on for years and years by Albert Boucherd and Sandy Pearlman, who were going to release it under a different band name with other musicians, but Columbia insisted that BOC do it and it be released under the BOC moniker. The entire album is about Desdinova and his adventures in Imaginos. As deep as people seem to think it is, it really is simple as that. But when it comes down to it, Imaginos is what BOC had been trying to definitively state for years and years, given that you count Pearlman as part of the band, which I do.
Listen to Imaginos. Althought the songs are out of order on the album, it will start to make more sense. The story they give you in the liner notes states that Imaginos is a "random access myth." They did that because the songs were put on the album out of order, at Columbia's insistence because they thought the album worked better that way. Listened to from start to finish, the time line of the album is out of whack.
Since it is out of print, it will set you back over $50 to get a copy. I have three. ha ha ha

The Smashing Pumpkins – Age of Innocence Lyrics 19 years ago
Best. Band. Ever. And along with Here Is No Why, Age of Innocence is one of their very best songs. The Smashing Pumpkins defined the term "Rock 'n Roll Glory."

Farewell song? Very probably, but it might not have been intentional.

Sub Dub Micromachine – Last Resort Lyrics 19 years ago
The hurts she could not resist are fairly obvious. Everywhere she went people would say things like, "you are going to hell, you little slut," and "you disgust me," and various other things of that nature. Had she been older and more emotionally mature, these "hurts" would not have bothered her as much.

Such a very sad song, and done so well. Having heard all the rest of their stuff, I was fairly suprised that they could handle a ballad so well. I think we can expect great things from Sub Dub in the future.
