to me, the chorus sounds completely different before and after the girl's verse. in the first two verses and first chorus, it seems like a relationship where the girl was more invested than the guy, and after it ended he was sad that they weren't able to remain friends. however, after her verse, you realize he's kind of a dick. he emotionally manipulated her throughout their relationship, so after she ends it she knows she has to cut off all ties because he's not a healthy relationship for her, even just as friends. when he sings the chorus for the last time he sounds spoiled instead of just sad they can't maintain a friendship. even though he wanted the relationship to end and he knew from the beginning it wasn't going to work, he still wants to be friends and is pissed he's not getting what he wants (since emotional abusers usually do). he is at fault for the relationship ending, but he still feels the need to blame her for something, just like he did the whole relationship |

straight from phil himself.... "Who Dunnit.....this song provoked Booos when we performed it in Europe when Abacab came out. It was built on a thing of Tony's when he had a new keyboard and went quickly round the presets in rhythm. I started improvising lyrics and we did it in an hour. If I can remind you that we were songwriters dipping into anything and everything, with punk happening and us agreeing that there WAS some deadwood needing to come off ( though not including OURSELVES in this !! ) we went for it." in case anyone was still curious as to why it was written/recorded/performed.... and i agree with opinions here. worst song they ever did. |

i know that amy has called this a 'happy' song, but i agree with liquid spear that it still sounds somewhat negative. when she says 'i've completely lost myself and i don't mind' and 'shouldn't let you conquer me completely', it seems like she can't be her true self with him and is therefore giving herself up to be with him. so while she is happy with this decision, and him, for now, she knows that in the future it is something she is going to regret (otherwise she would have added the 'i don't mind' or something similar after 'shouldn't let you conquer me completely'). despite that, i think the song is beautiful and while i haven't decided what my favorite is on the album yet, this is the one that i've listened to the most. one of the reasons i love evanescence/amy so much is that unlike most of the other 'musicians' out there now, not only can she sing but she can actually play instruments and write and arrange music. the piano on this song proves that beautifully. |

i heard that this song is about how amy knew that people were going to judge her/the band about the new album and how it's different than fallen. 'i won't be held down by who i used to be', i.e. musicians can't keep writing the same music over and over, and as she changed as a person the way she wanted her music to sound changed too. i think the 'if you love me then let go of me' part means if you liked my past stuff get over the fact that my newer music might sound different and enjoy how my writing has grown. the weight of the world is being pressured by people's expectations to write the same type of stuff as she did before versus what she wants to write. |

to me, this song is about a very young couple in a relationship and the girl gets pregnant. they get married even though the guy is uncomfortable with it ("the priests were all stoned" because they were encouraging them to get married; but he knows it was a mistake because he doesn't really love her "love was a game that we played"). "california was in my mind" and "my head's in the ground" because he wants to run away from what he's done, while the girl truly loves him and is hoping they will stay together, especially because of the pregnancy ("everything is fine, now the baby's here"). |

i think this song is about a guy who has had a bunch of one night stands instead of relationships, and then he meets a girl who he realizes he is falling for, but it is really tough for him to give up the lifestyle he is used to ("the beauty of this vision.... keeps invading all my private moments"). i agree with els24 about the "armies i have created" being his walls or defenses against finding a girl he loves, and they "will always hate it (the girl he's fallen in love with)" because they were invented to keep just that away. the iris of her eye "will always shake it" because without meaning to, he thinks of her when he is with another girl. |
