i went to the last show of Thrice's tour w/ Pelican and Circa Survive last night and right before playing this song, Dustin said it was a reminder for him to not forget that there are people across the sea just like us and he encouraged everyone to check out the Invisible Children table set up at the show. so ya, pretty obvious now. |

i believe the Lost Continent Dustin refers to is Africa. He speaks of children having a place to sleep, a reference to Invisible Children. He mentions the many wars and strife that Africa has been plagued with for a very long time. He then mentions our own apathy towards the situation. ("We'd rather close our eyes, sing soothing lullabies.") And warns that if we don't do something soon, it will be too late. |

| Thrice – The Whaler Lyrics | 18 years ago |

this is definitly a metaphor for Dustin's life in the band. He is The Whaler. He longs for his family; they are the most important thing to him. But he is also driven by his passion for music, and that leads him down many other roads in many different places. incredible song. |

i think this song deals with the singer wrestling with the concept of God. His flavor is in his mind. it is enjoyable and scary to him. he tries to prove otherwise, but when he does so, he only snares himself. kinda like he is trying to out-think God, and of course he never can. he comes to the conclusion that God is the only real thing in this world. thats my take at least. definitly my favorite song on this amazing record. |

| Thrice – Between the End and Where We Lie Lyrics | 19 years ago |

This song contains many illusions to C.S. Lewis' "The Silver Chair" Dustin explains it outright in the liner notes about the "sunlit lands" reference there is also another evident reference, found in the verse: daylight, they tell me that it’s just a myth and they try to betray me with a kiss daylight, they tell me that it can’t exist In "The Silver Chair" , when Estauce. Jill, and Puddleglum are in the Underlands trying to rescue Prince Rilian, the Queen of Underland, an evil witch, attempts to make the children forget Narnia. She does so by making it seem to them that the sun is just imagined to them, that it does not exist, that they are meant to be underground. so ya, bam. great song, clever allusions. i guess Thrice likes C.S. Lewis or something? |

| Emery – Returning The Smile You Have Had From The Start Lyrics | 19 years ago |

also, each song title is an answer to THE QUESTION. in the liner notes with the actual album, there is a question. it reads: Where were you when i was ... you can add in any song title and it makes sense. i.e. - Where were you when i was In a Win, Win Situation. i think it is a brilliant concept. |
