Just one note on the lyrics- it's "when I die, lord, bury me deep" not "alone". Most of the lyrics from that verse are taken from a great song called "Freight Train", by Elizabeth Cotten.
Here's a video of her performing it with Pete Seeger:

someone said this might be about a girl pete dated, but patrick was still writing the lyrics for this album. just fyi.
if I'd heard this song a few years ago, it probably would've been my theme song because of the chorus. back in the dark days before I accepted my fate as a 5'2" dude... |

lord if I make it through tonight
then I will mend my ways and walk the straight path to the end of my days.
I think he's kind of half-heartedly attempting suicide, so that's it's almost a test. He's going to take these pills and drink this booze until he blacks out, and if he wakes up again he'll take it as a sign from god and change his ways. |

the amazing jim is right about this not being a typical nonconformist anthem.
"there's no answer. just surrender
send all your barriers into the fire"
I think that he's calling on the transgendered to abandon the gender binary altogether instead of transitioning to the other sex. He's saying that sexual reassingment won't solve all their problems, and that by "cutting off" their suffering instead of their genitals, they can find happiness and empowerment and all that.
I hate to read too much into things, but based on the lyrics and Patrick's own embracing of androgyny it seems pretty likely to me. |

Yeah, I love the adult version because it sounds all threatening, while the children's version is happy.
It's definitely about children taking over the world with giant robots. I'm just waiting for this to happen... |
