The Dresden Dolls – Gravity Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about her (or someone) drink-driving. The first verse seems like she's so shocked that she spills her guts to the police officer at the scene. She says "someone tell her, someone get her up" meaning someone explain my problems to the girl I've just killed. But I think the whole chorus is from the point of view of the dead body.

"Necks are cracking sideways, Hit me from the backside" - Accident has happened
"I am on the white side, you are on the black side" - She is the innocent one in the accident
"I am on the thin side you are on the fat side" She is the pedestrian, the other one's in the car.
"Cut a piece thats bite size, Shoot me from my good/bad side" - Evidence taking at the scene
"If you got a straight line, this would be a good time" - Drink-driving test for the person that killed her.

The bits inbetween she recites the alphabet as you would in a drink-driving test, the whole posture left foot, right foot sounds like it could be her trying to walk in a straight line, and other things she says suggest a car accident. Then 2nd verse she seems on the verge of killing herself out of guilt.

System of a Down – She's Like Heroin Lyrics 16 years ago
About a guy who's addicted to Heroin and cross-dressing. I assume it's Daron. Started cross-dressing, hung around a tranny crowd (including prozzies), got hooked on heroin and is now starts to turn tricks like they did.

Queens of the Stone Age – Someones in the Wolf Lyrics 17 years ago
I like Hogan's interpretation that it's about sexual predators preying on innocent girls/virginal girls. The song definitely feels very charged with sexual energy. I'm guessing the person involved uses innocent/virgin girls and in a way keeps their innocence with him forever. The big strong heroic woodsman character and the wolf are equated to the same person.

This is also probably my favourite Marley song. It sums up exactly how I feel a lot of the time, and just eases the mind.

Immortal Technique – Beef and Broccoli Lyrics 17 years ago
To Dead Prez. I love Prez as well but he killed it with this. He's right on this, they pissed me off with that song. Trying tell me how to be healthy when looking like the "only hip-hop motherfuckers on Schindler's List"

Flobots – Handlebars Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about human potential and critical of capitalist society. The first half of the song is essentially a celebration of freedom and exploration of human potential with respect to others. He demonstrates his skills to others but is helping them as well.

In the 2nd verse though he explores his potential in doing things that are beneficial to only himself regardless of their effect on others. Some are good, most are neutral but it leads to a social antipathy, which in turn leads to:

"I know how to run a business
And I can make you wanna buy a product
Movers, shakers, and producers
Me and my friends understand the future
I see the strings that control the systems
I can do anything with no assistance"

It's at this point in the song where it starts to explore the power of human potential in relation to other people. When he reaches the point our protagonist who we'll call Mr H. Potential knows how to run a business, he's reached the point where he is actively using other humans for his own self-profit. At this point since he has reached a point where he exerts power over humans he decides needs "no assistance", and moves on unchecked by others or by the limitations of standard human traits like compassion.

The rest of the song explores the state of affairs we have gotten to in a society which allows progression past this point, and where those in government have the same attitude of self-profit, unchecked by others. 'Tis all about responsibility in relation to power I think.

Placebo – Pure Morning Lyrics 17 years ago
Actually on the 7th and 8th verses with the "morning" in the background I think it's an encouragement to think to the aftermath when encountering the situation. 5 and 6 are the thoughts in the aftermath of the person involved.

Placebo – Pure Morning Lyrics 17 years ago
This song's all about dual meaning. I think prince's explanation is pretty good on capturing one way of understanding the song but I do think it's about friendship/relationships and what you get out of them, mainly represented here by sex and drugs. A friend in need's a friend indeed I think covers both a pregnancy scare/a junkie

1st verse -
"A friend in need's a friend indeed,
a friend with weed is better
A friend with breasts and all the rest,
A friend who’s dressed in leather,"

Introduction to the relationship. The beginnings of the relationship revolves around sexual appeal and drugs. He's got something to gain from those two aspects of the relationship. From now on every part of the song covers those dual aspects of sex and drugs. I believe the mainly sexual aspect covers a long-term relationship whilst the mainly drug-oriented aspect covers the short term.

2nd verse -
"A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend who’ll tease is better
Our thoughts compressed,
Which makes us blessed,
And makes for stormy weather,"

In the long term relationship she teases him sexually and he enjoys it. Due to their catering to each other it seems like their thoughts are compressed - seeing only in short-term without a view to where the relationship will lead, and that'll make for problems in the future "stormy weather"

In the short term her teasing him sexually ."Our thoughts compressed, which makes us blessed" I think refers to the drugged up state, which acts to simplify conversation/exchanges, but makes them "blessed", and enjoy each other's company. "Makes for stormy weather" is because their entire relationship at this stage still just revolves around sex appeal and drugs, and he doesn't really know her. This has basically been made the equivalent of the stage in the long-term relationship, with the 2 short-term druggies not knowing each other any better than those in the long-term one.

"A friend in needs a friend indeed,
My Japanese is better,
And when she’s pressed she will undress,
And then she’s boxing clever,"

In long-term relationship terms it starts turning a little sour here which is why I think he says "my Japanese is better", which I think he's using to say it's easier for him to conversate in Japanese than with his 'friend'. He's obviously pressing for sex, with the 'boxing clever' phrase meaning it'll be an act of self-preservation i.e. the only action that can preserve the relationship.

The meaning on the drugs side with the lines "A friend in need's a friend indeed, my Japanese is better" would intimate that she now needs something from him, but the substance (I assume opium/heroin if japanese) is better. "When she's pressed she will undress" refers to him taking advantage of her in the same way as the long term, with boxing clever in this case meaning how she'll get the drugs.

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend who bleeds is better,
My friend confessed she passed the test,
And we will never sever,

Along the longer lines of a sexual relationship I think it refers to a pregnancy occurring for the same reasons as everyone else thinks it. "We will never sever" I believe refers to not having an abortion and this last line is her making the declaration for both of them. I think it represents how although he may have believed he was orchestrating the relationship until then, in the end it has backfired and she has the control.

In the short term concerning drugs "a friend who bleeds is better" means he feels happy now haing manipulated her because of her drug addiction. Her confessing she passed the test (I assume STI in this case) makes him happy to share a needle with her. I think "we will never sever" again represents it backfiring on him but has a more sinister meaning within it. I think it representing a link through a blood related illness, which can never be "severed".

Day’s dawning, skins crawling [repeat three more times]
Pure morning

Represents that time when you're coming down and light starts to dawn on you as your awareness returns and you start to realise you're in a bad situation.

The repetition of the verses deal with the emotions after finding out.

5th "thoughts compressed" - Better if it had remained as it was
6th "we will never sever" - Realisation again
7th "boxing clever" - How stupid he feels now for the manipulation
8th - Representing a return to the start of the relationship/encounter for listeners. Symbolised by the despondency of the suicide attempter in the video, yet ending with him having a 2nd opportunity. the song hopefully having given those who understand it a 2nd attempt at not fucking things up.

The White Stripes – Blue Orchid Lyrics 18 years ago
I thought it was about a young girl losing her virginity easily too. The whole flower theme couldn't be just coincidentaly. Also never associated the colour blue with pregnancy, though it would explain why Jack White chides the object of this song so much.

Muse – Yes Please Lyrics 19 years ago
There’s too much noise in my head!
I cannot sleep,
I want it here instead!

I never thought that this could come to this.
I just wanna look at your face in peace now.
You’ll never miss.
But I can...

I cannot keep
The shame that’s clawed us out!
I will not keep
Your shut-up, shut-up lies!

I never thought that this could come to this.
I just wanna live in bliss, in peace now.
You will never miss.
But I can...

Muse – Starlight Lyrics 19 years ago
Think the songs talking about two things here. It appears to focus on drugs tbh.

"Far away
This ship is taking me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

Starlight
I will be chasing your starlight
Until the end of my life
I dont know if it’s worth it anymore"

This bit I think is talking about the person featured experience and feelings on drugs

"Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to
Hold you in my arms"

This I think is referring to what drove the person to take drugs. Notice he's referring to it in the past, "wanted" as opposed to the active chasing of the starlight (high) taking place in the present. Not as pining as at the end indicating he is still high.

"My life
You electrify my life
Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive"

Again talking about the drug experience and expressing the belief that it would help people who were once depressed like him

"I’ll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away..."

Trying to hold on to the remains of the trip

"Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to
Hold you in my arms"

Trip wearing off and he/she confronting their feelings + coming down. "Our hopes and expectations - Black holes and revelations" I believe refers to their hopes and expectations being swallowed up as if in a black hole and revealed to amount to nothing. Sounds quite emotional and pining at the end in order to relay the feeling of hopelessness/helplessness after the comedown

Metallica – Don't Tread On Me Lyrics 19 years ago
It's a song with a double meaning I think. It obviously draws from the bible, where after Adam and Eve eat the fruit of knowledge at the insistence of the snake, humans are cursed to tread on serpents, and serpents to bite the heel. This song is operating on the principle that it was the serpent that set the humans free.

With the symbolism the serpent represents the general populace and the man in his position of dominance represents the authority/government. It was the populace/serpent that ensured the government and people in charge to obtain freedom, but because they are in a position of power they feel they can "step" on the populace. This song warns that although they are in power, we (the populace) are still in a position to damage them.

Definitley not patriotic bull****.

How can anyone think this song is not about tripping? He basically just sings the thought processes you have when you're tripping.

I don't know how the song was done originally, but the Muse versionm came of as incredibly sarcastic, espescially with the 'freedom is mine' line, considering the tone of their other songs.

Muse – Citizen Erased Lyrics 19 years ago
emokid's explanation was pretty much the one I think of when I listen to this song. That it's about how society corrupts and moulds a person's ideals into it's own, and that the song was about one persons mental conflict betwen his "true self" and what society had moulded him into.

The "Truths unwinding scraping away/ Please stop asking me to describe him" I thought was about how his pure true personality was being stripped away by society, and he was no longer even able to identify himself. I didn't know about the rape thing though.
