"It's such a trip that I can hide how close I am to suicide" heh, how weird it is how well I can relate. |

I really like the very last lines but I might have to cease my deeds. I might have to take control 'cause I ain't down with little mc growin' up in a cloud of my second-hand smoke. As respectable as I thought mc chris was before, the fact that he's having second thoughts about bringing up a child around weed just further proves how awesome he is. I don't have any reservations against weed, but at the same time it's cool to see that mc chris wants to be a good parent...kay I probably read into this WAY too much, but that's just my two cents. |

| I just have to say, if I ever make it big in this world, I'm going to write a song where I just throw a bunch of deep sounding verses together in a song and see what people interpret it all as. I mean, just look at how many radically different interpretations people have come to about ONE SONG. I think this alone is a testament to the lyrical genius of James Mercer. Most band's lyrical interpretations would stop at "it's about a relationship, and this is why..." but with the Shins it's different. They sing about everything, and have a paradoxical style that makes total sense, but only once you first comprehend the punch line. I just amazes me how brilliantly deep this whole band is, as well as how intelligent fans of the Shins are required to be in order to "get" the music they're listening to. I just want to formally pat everyone on the back who can come to ANY sort of conclusion by themselves. Most people come running to this site to enlighten themselves. If you read through this thread, though, you see a plethora of posts attempting to enlighten OTHERS. And that, my friends, is a testament to the brilliance of Shins fans. | |

If you want to see Ben playing this solo, just check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uar8b5kFVWg Hopefully he'll end up putting it on either a postal service cd or a death cab for cutie cd... though the fact he has little control over how postal service songs come out sounding would lead me to believe it would be the latter. Good song nonetheless (Come on, it's Ben Gibbard!) |

It's my belief that this song is largely political. Here I tried to analyze most of the song. Anyone got any ideas as to what the other stuff could be alluding? Anywho... Hurled to the center of the Earth again, (Off fighting in Iraq again…”center”=middle. Middle East…) The place where it's hot, love, (Iraq is a very hot place) You know, it hurts to breathe in, And the watershed you balance on is begging it, Well did he ever know, (Did Bush ever know the tragedies of Iraq would happen?) Will he ever know? (Will he ever admit it?) The trees in the moonshine are a dark lattice, So you catalog in the angle you notice, In a vacuum you recharge to record this, So you won't make it easy on me. And I can't go into this no more, It puts too many thorns on my mind, And the necessary balloon lies a corpse on the floor,* We've pissed on far too many sprites, (We’ve pissed off all of these middle eastern people) And they're all standing up for their rights. (And now they’re fighting back) Born on a desert floor, you've the deepest thirst, (Bush was born in Texas, a desert floor. He thirsts for oil.) And you came to my sweet shore to indulge it, (So Bush went to Iraq to indulge his thirst for the oil) With the wan and dreaming eyes of an orphan, But there is not enough, (His thirst will never be indulged) There is not enough. Out of a gunnysack for red rabbits, Into the crucible to be rendered an emotion, And we can't allow a chance they'd restore themselves, (The whole issue of turning the country back over to Iraq) So we can't make it easy on you. Undaunted, you bathed in hollow cries, (No matter how much the world disagreed, the US continued its invasion) The boils were swollen, sunburned eyes, (All of the death and pain we’ve suffered…) A reward for letting our feet under their skin, (…is the price we have to pay for Bush’s folly) So help me, I don't know, I might, Just give the old dark side a try. (Because nothing moral was working, many of our soldiers resorted to cruel and unusual tactics to fight back) Don't cast your warring eyes on the shore, (Warring eyes? This is obvious…) Did we even the score? (Have we achieved what we wanted yet?) I still owe you for the hole in the floor, And the ghost in the hall, Who decides who paddles over the falls? (Who decides to pull out and allow this mess to cave in upon us?) Yeah, who makes the call, Who makes the call? Well, I know there's an eventual Release from every scale of crime, (Eventually, things will get better) But the necessary balloon lies a corpse on the floor,* We've pissed on far too many good intentions held by clever sprites, And they're all standing up for their rights. * I’m thinking that, as simple metaphor, the balloon could be a bomb and the promise of death (the corpse) brings it crashing to the ground. On a more metaphoric level, I think the balloon is what would make this war seem justified (flying high so to speak), if it weren't for the corpse (death which people are seeing... maybe the disagreement?) |

This song, to me, is so incredibly epic. Every time I listen to it I feel like I'm on some great adventure. It starts out in an almost paradoxical racing lull which just seems to draw me into the song. What is so amazing though is the small nuances I notice for the first time each time I listen to it. Like what sounds to be a television broadcast or the sounds of birds chirping. And just as my mind starts to slip, the song pulls my entire being into it around 2:28 with the most amazing... I don't even know what to call it. Bliss? Words just can't describe the feeling. It's as though I've let go everything within me. And that's when the song stops and the acoustic guitar begins, filling the emptiness within with a satisfying nothingness. And just as my mind's eyes begin float away, the song pulls me back in with the spectacular sounds of what sounds like a heartbeat or shots of a cannon. The song then builds and builds into a glorious climax that is a myriad of strings, each one singing a song of overwhelming emotion. Sadness, happiness, triumph and disappointment... all emotions and states of beings blend into one great orchestra of sound. And just as the song ends, just as the light faded from the eyes of this beautiful giant, the thing that always comes to my mind is "This is the way the world ends/ Not with a bang, but a whimper"... |

* First off, I think it's "you're no animal" * Also, I think "And spill it out in the ragged floor" should be "And spill it out in ragged form" * Finally, I believe "Because the old God still offend" is in fact "Because the old guards still defend" My reasoning for that last one is that this song really makes me think of Alice in Wonderland and how Wonderland was a lot like a dream. The whole "off with their heads" line totally gave that away. * "And you're not obliged/ To swallow anything that you despise" --I believe this refers to the mushrooms that Alice consumed to make her change sizes (And how she didn't want to eat them). * I think the book that Mercer's referring to might be Alice in Wonderland * Perhaps this song is from the viewpoint of the Queen of Hearts. I don't know, but I really can't help but think this song has something to do with Alice in Wonderland... any thoughts? * |
