"Civilian" here refers to someone who doesn't share the narrator's experience (work, lifestyle, history) so he can't fully understand her. A pretty ready interpretation would be that it's about being a musician/touring, can't keep up with friends, can't "give you everything." But I think it's kind of too easy to think every song as autobiographical, she's a musician so it must be about that. |
