A lot of these songs are about AIC, but my personal meaning of this song is about 2 people.
"and I always paid attention to all the lines you crossed", obvious meaning. All the times she hurt him, or crossed the line, he paid attention and he never forgot and will always hold it against her. He asks her to forgive that imperfection, because usually in a relationship it's about forgive and forget, but he can't do that when it comes to her, maybe she's hurt him too much to forgive and forget. To me this is about a one-sided relationship. The singer loved her, but he was never good enough for her..."intend obsolescence". The scales are basically all he's giving to her...give, give, give...tipping the scale and eventually breaking it because on her side of the scale there is nothing. When he talks about crossing the line, I take it as lines he crossed in order to save what they had, but she never paid attention. |

love this song. So there is some ambiguity about what "te falta un poco" means in the song. Basically with what he he is saying is "you're very close to get your ass in a choke hold", trying to translate it literally is worthless because it makes no sense if you do. Oh, I'm Spanish btw ;P |

This is probably my favorite Stabbing Westward song. This song is so sad and if the poster that said it is about Chris' gf who died, then wow, this song is even sadder than what I originally thought. To me it hits home having recently broke up with a gf, even though we had it out and hated each other at the end, I still miss what we had when it was good, and yeah, waking up beside her. |

Yeah i love when people take this song literally, like this girl I've been talking to recently...she's not big into music and was like, tell me a NIN song to listen to so I picked one out that she might've heard before, and it was Closer, and shes all like, why did you pick this song??? like i picked it out in reference to me wanting to fuck her lol. I mean yeah the song can be interpreted as the whole story in TDS, or as a sex song, whatever you want really, thats the genious of Trent Reznor and the very few artists like him can make a song appeal to many different people cause it can mean something different to anyone. |

I picture a giant citadel in my head, where this "power", or "religion" is exercising control out of and the pigs are all the people it's been controlling, and they're marching up to it. Maybe they've been let in on a secret and they want to find out the truth and when the doors come down they realize all they've been fed are lies, hence the "Surprise!". So now its a full out rebellion with the pigs wanting to destroy what they had been worshiping and fearing all their lives, which turned out to be a big sack of stinking lies. |

love this song, and it doesn't necessarily portray Christianity, but religion as a whole, any religion. They're all the same when it comes down to it; religion was created to instill fear in people that there is a higher power up there and it is watching you so you better behave yourself and act how it wants you to act or you're damed for eternity in hell, the underworld, whatever. I like to think this is a song of how Trent views "god", as an uncaring POS.
"he sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see" god is afraid to see what his creation (us) has become.
The chorus is basically saying religion is dead, nobody really follows religion anymore, and no one really cares either, and w/o faith there is no god, so he's dead. |

ok, to me this song is about a relationship of sorts...with a girl , with drugs, whatever. I guess the people who say its about cops beating someone up, or the manson murders (which its not because Trent has said so himself it's not about that), then cool, let that be your interpretations but don't be like, "yeah man, Trent got beat up by cops for doing heroine and got thrown in jail! Fucking pigs!" -_- |

lol to the poster who said chris cornell has an awesome voice, hes good, but he sounds pretty bad live, cant hit those notes like he does on the cd :) this song could mean different things to different ppl, but it is definitely about getting away from something, which is why he uses burning that gasoline...right now i can relate this song to my gf cause shes having major issues at home and yesterday she just had to leave her house and said she had to just "drive" , wasn't sure where to, but just had to drive to get away from the house cause she didnt want to be in it...my 2 cents ;) |

this is MY meaning of the song, everyone tries to make it..what is trents meaning, what was he thinking?? trent never tells anyone what his songs means and hes even said so in interviews, his meanigns will die with him, they could mean ANYTHING and i think its because he wants you to take your own meaning of his song, make your own interpretation, relate them to what you've felt or whats going on or whats happened in your life...to me this song reminds me of a relationship i had, I wanted this girl, i got this girl, grew tired of her, but she grew attached and i just wanted her to erase me from her life and stop having these feelings. thats my take :) |
