Modest Mouse – Alone Down There Lyrics 14 years ago
i think this song is about suicide due to:

"my name is you"
soulmates. he's saying that they are both the same person.

"you can't see anything well"
the other person is dead.

"the flies they all gather around me and you too"
the other person is dead. and the singer feels he is dead too, because he equates himself with the deceased person.

"devils apprentice game me some credit. fed me a line.. probs regret it"
i see this as representative of the protagonist recognising the option of suicide. the "line" is basically his thought process pitching him the option of suicide to achieve his goal of re-establishing his equilibrium with the deceased. "credit" may be that he feels he sold his soul to the devil (possibly in relation to the relationship with the deceased), and so he now owes himself to hell anyway.

"i don't want you to be alone down there"
if you've read everything else i wrote, i think this one is self explanatory :) but i will note that he says "down there" not "up there". and he has referred to the devil specifically already.

so yeah, pretty sure it's about reuniting/reunifying with his partner, in hell or at least in death.

Dntel – (This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan Lyrics 18 years ago
my interpretation of the song is as follows:

it is a dream primarily from the perspective of Evan, who is in a smokey karaoke bar, and he is watching Chan - who is is singing english songs in broken english. Chan then pulls him up, on stage to sing instead (because Evan is fluent in english).

Even obviously is infatuated with Chan, based on his staring at her singing earlier (i have not decided if the two were aquainted or not, but i guess it doesn't really matter).

the 'i won't let go' part is a slow-motion concentration on his thoughts/emotions as Chan unexpectedly makes contact with him, pulling him on-stage, and then standing with him while he sings.

the next part is saying that he sang a lot of songs, and everyone applauded.

and then it switches to later, with the two of them alone, spooning and cuddling. in the middle of which the dreamer is awakened by the telephone.

i don't think the dreamer necessarily has to be Evan either, he just has to be dreaming he is Evan. and the part where it is third person, rather than first person, i put down to the peculiar fashion of dream narritives. it doesn't seem to be a conflict to me, because often in my dreams, it switches from being in first person to third-person and back again. it just sort of depends on where the dream-camera is.

and that's how i see it. i love this song, because it feels beautiful to listen to! :)

The Decemberists – Sixteen Military Wives Lyrics 19 years ago
a great many people interpret this song, wrongly i think, because it may be easy to ignore the sarcasm and project your own pro-american ideals on it. but i am not american, and i do not see it that way.

the point of my contribution though, is to suggest that the constant use of numbers throughout this song may be a reference to the informal statistical representation of war, and the deaths that result from it, as seen by those in power.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Communist Daughter Lyrics 19 years ago
i am not sure if i believe this or not, but i just wanted so suggest the possibility of the mountain tops representing the tops of her world. or her reality. and the semen representing corruption with possibly some literal representation as well.

so the "semen stains the mountain tops" refers to corruption staining her world, though not completely; it has not made it to the land yet, it is just seeping in down the mountain tops. and staining her innocense.

the cars careening from the clouds i see as airplanes and bombers. and bombs. metal people carriers, in other words. bridges bursting and twisting around being the bridges they are blowing up, possibly also isolating her further in a more symbolic sense.

and i think in her want for comfort, she must turn to herself, through masturbation. to find something that feels good.

the masturbation also makes sense as a response to her 'stained' world.

i think she may really be a literal communist daughter. that had, until the war, been living a contented and idealistic life. possibly on her fathers cocain farm, or possibly nothing do do with that. i do not know how reliable that 'coca leaves' correction was. but even besides, i think that is how i interpret this song.
