This is a second comment on the song so refer back to that to understand this post fully. Mainly what I mean by lines #1-5. So a month has past and I thought about this song again and found that in my opinion it has a Atheistic outlook but is not fully a anti-Religious song. Here's my thinking take lines #1 & #2 they more or less saying, "I'm not religious since it does fit my personality (don't buy it)." And lines #3-#5 more or less say, "Don't hold me to the standards (including caring about it) of religion since I'm not a follower or have different views." The line, 'Don't expect me to lie' stuck out to me and it sounds like to me, "Don't expect me to force (change) myself to believe in a theory/s." So disregard my original jist I wrote at the end of my first post. ***To me the song is saying more or less, 'I don't buy Religion so don't hold to it's standards'*** Atheistic outlook but not fully anti-religion as a whole since it does put it down by call it's followers stupid or sheep like or say anything about why should you follow a "destructive" God or calls Religion a lie or anything like this just that 'I don't buy it so don't hold me to it's standards'. |

Before I start I like to say I find it odd how a song with such intense lyrics is sung so happy. I don’t think anyone but for the people around Kurt knew his religious views (if even them). However I from what I understand from loose sources he was a devote Christian when he was young however rebelled against it as a teenager and became a self-titled Satanist. However this may just be a bad joke he found funny in some way. I have also heard he was a Atheist and a Buddhist so I don’t think anyone really knows for sure but I think it is safe to say that he is at least Agnostic or non-Religious. Even in his suicide letter he mentioned both God and Jesus. So I like to think he was more non-Religious then anything else personally. But he must agree somewhat with this song if he liked playing it so much. Anyhow to get to the song. I don’t know if this means anything but before playing this song in Newcastle, England on 12/02/1991 Cobain said, “Hi my name is Kurt Cobain I'm homosexual, I'm a pagan, I'm a drug abuser, and I like to fuck pot-bellied pigs” Maybe this means something or maybe it doesn’t. There are only five lines in the whole song so it’s a little vague. This is how I understand them. #1 — “Jesus don’t want me for a sunbeam” If you read the Christian hymn a sunbeam sounds to be someone who spreads Jesus teachings. So I hear “Jesus doesn’t want me to spread his message”. #2 — “Sunbeams are not made like me.” This sounds to me like saying, “I’m not the type to spread a religious message and/or be religious” #3 — “Don’t expect me to cry for all the reasons you had to die” This sounds to me like saying, “Since I don’t care because I’m not a follower and/or I have a different religious view” or something like that. #4 — “Don’t ever ask you love of me” This sounds to me as saying, “Don’t care about me since I’m not a follower” #5 — “Don’t expect me to cry, lie, die for thee” To cry…because I’m not a follower To lie…to myself and/or others about you/your message To die for thee.. because I’m not a follower. So all together I hear something along to lines of this. Jesus doesn’t want me to spread his message because I’m not the type to spread a religious message. And I won’t feel bad about Jesus dying since I’m not a follower of him. So don’t feel bad about me (because I’m not a follower of his). And I won’t cry since I’m not a follower and I won’t lie to myself or others about your teachings. Also I won’t die in the name of Jesus since I’m not a follower. As a religious person (not a Christian but religious) I don’t know how to really feel about these lyrics. |

Going just from the two verses Chris sings this is what I got. I think it has to do something with the "Hand of God" being a preacher. "The hand of God lays high above me" This might be the preacher pointing into a crowd which is above. "The hand of God is thick and callous Bruised and torn from stones and sticks" This might be how a lot of preachers are old men who have these big thick bruised up hands. "The hand of God has got a ring about the size of Texas" A lot of preachers have big rings. |

Without knowing the backround to the song it sounds like a Atheist song but when you look into it no such thing. It's about James Hetfields mother who died of cancer because she wouldn't get medical help because she was a Christian Science. IT'S NOT A ATTACK ON RELIGION! It's more about James being mad with his mom on not getting help when she needed it. http://video.aol.com/video-detail/james-hetfield-god-that-failed-interview/892322052 The link is to a interview where at the end (4:15) James even says, "The title is a little heavy for some people..you know Metallica attacking religion [shakes head, saying 'no'] and all this. Yeah it's just my thoughts on my childhood and they can't deny me that...that's a therapy for myself" |
