Pure and simple, this is about death and it's inevitability and the all pervasive dread that it inspires. People try to avoid death, try to act like it's never touched their lives, try to beat it back but it always wins in the end. When a person's number is up, it's up. |

Y'know, I've always thought this song could be about a bipolar person entering an intense manic phase. The feel of the song is energetic but I don't sense a true happiness. I get the feeling that it's someone who's losing control of themselves and is underneath a little frightened by it. Sure there's energy but feeling amped up isn't always a good feeling. |

I don't know if this is what the song was supposed to be about or not but the general disconnected creepiness of the song and the way he keeps wondering where Mary went, stating that he needs someone to think for him because he can't bear to and the way he keeps thinking she might be in the bathtub makes me think that he might have killed her in an alcohol/drug fueled rage and on some subconscious level, he knows this but is trying to remain in denial as long as possible. |

One of the best songs dealing with a toxic relationship. They've deteriorated to the point that they don't touch or kiss and the woman is at least psychologically abusive and may be physically abusive as well. She's definitely a bully. It appears from the singer's tone that the man in the story is getting increasingly angry and frustrated with the situation. |

One of my favorites from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Basically, the idea I get from this song is that it's about a man stuck in a remote barren landscape and he's haunted because he killed a woman and threw her down the well that he's referencing. Probably killed her because he was isolated with her and isolated people often go a little crazy in one way or another. He keeps revisitng the well that he dumped her in and he's completely miserable and guilt stricken. I think of a dead woman in a well because he mentions his little floating girl and he mentions that he dare not sleep where the right winds whistle or he feels that her soul will come back and clutch at his heart. Actually, a pretty creepy song but then again, much of Cave's work is creepy. |

I've always thought that this song was about someone who gets into something that at first seems like a good enterprise and then finding out too late that there are strings attached and that the person doesn't really have any control any more in whether they want to continue or not. Especially the part about "Souls destroyed with clever toys for little boys". Eh, I'm probably off base but that's my thought. |
