I don't think so. The last few lines are kind of a hit out at the culture of objectification. "The stars look so pretty from so far away". Like, these women are pretty, but that's not who they really are. |

There just seem to be a lot of hints of actual time passing. Like "tracing the years with her finger on her skin" and the part about playing with candles suggests birthday cakes to me ("blowing out wishes, blowing out dreams"). |

I think that this song is about a woman who has had a baby young, and about how she and the father have a hard life because they were ill prepared, but then I think the last verse is her as an old woman (based on the fact that Elvis seems to be grown) and she realises that the hard parts were the best times of her life, and now she's past it all, and the father has died (I think) she just wants to relive all those apparent hard times. |

And when people are quoting the bible to support the anti-homosexuality (or anti "actually being a homosexual as opposed to a version of it Christianity can encompass") movement, there's plenty of quotes that ring out against women being more than silent, modest figures supporting their husbands and bearing children. Most churches have learned to overlook this for the sake of their survival in a feminist world, accepting that it was simply the practice of the society at the time. I can see parallels |

For homosexuals, Christian's accept that they are what they are but recommend that they do not act upon it by entering into any kind of relationship. Considering the fact that Jesus went against all social tradition and remained celibate, perhaps he was just anticipating this little gem of insight you have and practising what you preached. Considering that, according to Christian history, Jesus NEVER did anything reemotely sexual, his actual sexuality is just speculation. And before you throw yourself up in arms at this suggestion, I'm just pointing out a little flaw in your logic. If you genuinely believe that being born a homosexual isn't a sin, merely the act of gay sex, then Jesus was a sin-free homosexual. A gay messiah, you could say? |

Just because Rufus uses the word messiah doesn't mean he means Jesus. A messiah is just a redeemer. Jesus was meant to be the messiah for the Jewish people, who were being oppressed. I'm pretty sure Mr Wainwright here is just playing up the word a little. Gay people are currently being oppressed, so maybe they need a messiah too? Not another Jesus, but a Messiah of their own? |
