Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics 13 years ago
This entire song is sung as past tense, i think a lot of people miss that. It's not the story of a break-up it's a reflection on a break-up. The type if imagery that appears when you bump into an "ex" as it were. That said the song is the reflection of the actual act, an explanation of why it happened is put across but always interlaced with reflective views.

The break-up described is your typical, run of the mill, "it just doesn't work, you know it, i know it, etc" type of affair. The song in it's larger portion i think is more about the aftermath. It's somewhat suggested that he didn't end the relationship but not made clear, this line hints at it:

"But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over"

The "But" suggests that it wasn't exactly what he had in mind, it's only a hint though, the song is far from clear on the point. It's almost a suggestion that he had resigned himself to misery and accepted it for "love" as suggested in the first verse, this is why she ultimately left.

I think the point of the song from the second verse onwards is about him actually finding he still wants her and this is the issue. I think i disagree with a fair few people on Kimbra's part and what it means, i think it is more about the shitty little head games people play when they break up with someone when they actually want them to stick about. Look at the verse this way:

"Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
And I don't wanna live that way"

"Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know"

the first 2 lines are a reflection on the relationship "Now and then i think.." up until "...something that I'd done and i don't wanna live that way" which is fine in itself but after this, i think we get to the crux of the issue, i think "reading into every word you say" is actually part of the problem, it's a reference to those 'clever' little remarks people make when being 'friends' that are used to mess with someones head who is trying to move on. I'm sure a lot of people know what I'm referring too and i think that is what this is really about and this is ultimately why she had to cut him off, it wasn't being cut up about the break-up, it was about the head games and being repetitively dragged over the issues in the relationship over and over again by the guy who just can't move on.

Sorry for the text wall, this is just my interpretation and i feel better for having it out there, thanks.

Dashboard Confessional – Vindicated Lyrics 13 years ago
It seems to me that this song is actually the other way around. This is about getting engadged to someone and actually realising that they are right about you, you are WORTH being with. Surely to state you are vindicated and then to follow that with "i am selfish, i am wrong" is to say that you were right about your own self opinion in more ways than one, to say that you were correct in that you were selfish and wrong because you are worthy of this and you can see it now and it's time you became what you now see you have the potential to be.

I don't agree with the other way of looking at it because of the words:

"So mesmerising, so hypnotising, i am captivated"

captivated - past participle, past tense of cap·ti·vate
Verb:
Attract and hold the interest and attention of; charm.

Why would it be captivating to see a ring on the finger of a girl you love? It wouldn't, it'd be heartbreaking and that's not the feel of this song at all.

I don't know, just my take (:

This song on my playlist is always followed by Screaming Infidelities.

I think it follows it quite nicely in the stories they tell.

Streetlight Manifesto – A Better Place, A Better Time Lyrics 19 years ago
My opinion of "emo" obviously differs a bit from some people here, if a song invokes an emotion, it is "emo". None of this music classification crap for a certain type of music. Streetlight Manifesto lyrics are emotional and heartfelt and you can tell in the music. These guys are doing a lot no other band has done yet and they are incredibly amazing for doing it.

"1st: BOTAR will never come with a full length... the project is dead... unfortunately"
You might want to check their site, they are not dead, just busy.... :P

Streetlight Manifesto – Giving Up, Giving In Lyrics 19 years ago
i was wondering for a long time, they are sung like that on purpose, the lyrics are at the end as best i know

"Don’t stop whatever I might say got a problem,
About your day, I’m moving things out the way.
i give up
i got no cash."

Streetlight Manifesto – Point/Counterpoint Lyrics 19 years ago
For one i bought Keasbey Nights Volume 2 and it rocks, totally rocks. I'd gladly pay for it because they have generally made the songs sound cleaner (yes i do have both Keasbey nights' now) but anyway

If you were to go see Streetlight live you'd find that they will play Point-Counterpoint but you'll find what they actually play is Keasbey nights - Point Counterpoint - Keasbey Nights and it is the most awesome thing ever, seriously. They will go into Point Counterpoint from the natural slow bit in Keasbey Nights and then play all of it then finish the end of Keasbey Nights. Amazing live and for me this song is and always will be the standout song from the first Streetlight Manifesto album.
