| Tokyo Police Club – Tessellate Lyrics | 17 years ago |
a tessellation is when there are a bunch of identical pieces that fit together perfectly. so i'm pretty sure that the "broken hearts tessellate" part means the pieces coming and fitting back together. in other words, the broken heart is fixing itself back together |

| Elliott Smith – Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the pencil full of poison lead i thought was pretty obvious, and people probably already explained it, but when i heard that line i immediately thought that it was talking about writing bitter angry things, because when you're pretty much just angry at everything that's happening around you with the people around you, you're not going to write something calm and neutral-positioned, if it's a song or whatever else you're writing. if you're that bitter towards things, you're going to want to write whatever you're writing in that mood. | |
| Elliott Smith – Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands (Alternative demo) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
yeah, not exactly a demo there. i actually prefer the live version of this that i have, there's a certain quality to his voice that's different and almost urgent-sounding. and i love the twelve-stepping-cop thing. this version's more angry than the album version. and i have some corrections. i think these are right, if not, oh well. correct me. -"and it isn't a real offense, you see" -"with two of fear city's finest..." -"and for you, twelve-stepping cop, to not find out" but as to what it means...i think this version expresses the meaning much more blatantly. and that's partially what makes it sound angrier and it's also part of why i like it better. it's about people thinking they know what's best for you and not being open to other options. i think the sun is basically like people and their opinions? they're lazy because they think there's one solution to your problems, and they're pushy with it. and the "you're the one who's bringing it all about" part is basically saying that if you hadn't gotten into this situation, you wouldn't have these people forcing their methods onto you, like the "twelve-stepping cop" thing which basically speaks for itself. |
| Elliott Smith – The Enemy Is You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
You know yourself well You know what you're about Just want to block it out ahhh :( yeah i think he's talking about himself, even if it is in the second person. but i really really really love this song. it means a lot to me. |
| Elliott Smith – Placeholder Lyrics | 18 years ago |
yeah, to the person who said that if you read a lot you'd realize that there's a god: a LOT of well-read people believe there's no god. and unless you're seeing the perfection in the actual books themselves and not the stories or positions they take, then yeah, that might be a little bit of "perfection" for you. but just because a book is published doesn't mean that it holds any sort of truth. it's easy if you're genuinely happy to see perfection everywhere, but it's much easier to be not genuinely happy and to see the negitivity in everything. if you're trying to balance the two extremes and still find perfection, go ahead. but if you ultimately do find perfection in everything, then you haven't lived enough. i, for one, don't think that it's about death or god or anything like that. i just thought it was about how nothing's really constant, and eventually, just like a favorite song or something, he will be replaced by the next thing. and he's just waiting for it to happen. |
| Elliott Smith – Poem #1 (Point A) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
yeah on some interview he was talking about this, and it definitely sounds like he wrote it.... "well, it wasn't poetry!" he laughs. "it was just a bunch of crap i made up that day. i wind up making up a lot of stuff, i wouldn't say that it's good or bad, it's just a bunch of stuff that comes about on the way towards a song. it didn't particularly rhyme, didn't make a whole lot of sense, it was just a big cloud of words obscuring something that i might want to try and figure out at some point. honestly, i can't remember what it was i was talking about that night. something about numbers." |
| Elliott Smith – New Monkey Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| everybody's got something to hiiiiide... | |
| Elliott Smith – Half Right Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i thought it was you shouldn't DOCTOR yourself. With a broken sink for a face And a head that just takes up space He's not half right He's not half right this kills me, because it seems like he's referring to himself. i swear if almost anyone else wrote this i'd just think it was whiny. if i wrote this i'd think it was whiny. but it's so perfectly sad when he sings it. it's indescribable. |
| Elliott Smith – Sons Into Daughters Lyrics | 18 years ago |
it's called riot coming on new moon, but the version i had before was sons into daughters. i like sons into daughters better as a title, actually. but this is a great song either way. |
| Elliott Smith – Looking Over My Shoulder Lyrics | 18 years ago |
okay, corrections... well what I hear anyways on the new moon version... 1-according to spin, the first line is "wiped out in the city slick" 2-i think it's burning, not rooting, through the trash 3-full of things that I'M not to do 4-SONNET not sonic 5-i think it's LABEL, not made up, but I don't know. |

| Elliott Smith – Ostriches and Chirping Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I think that if Elliott chose the tracks it WOULD be better. It would be more meaningful, with songs like True Love and stuff... Have MUCH more insight. |
| Elliott Smith – See You in Heaven Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I could easily cry. I love this song. I usually hate instrumentals. |
| Elliott Smith – L.A. Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The second time he sings "LA" makes this song for me. I really do love it, cause I agree w/whoever siad that there's a lot of themes people can relate to in this song. |
| Bright Eyes – I Will Be Grateful for This Day Lyrics | 18 years ago |
mmhaha i agree with willlliw. dying isn't so great... |
| Bright Eyes – I Will Be Grateful for This Day Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Ahh yeah it could quite possibly be about Elliott Smith, or just use him as a vehicle for someone changing and all... And to the person on the last page who said they didn't think he killed himself... I honestly don't think that's true, and Conor's point of view in this song (if it was about him) doesnt seem to make sense with the "jennifer chiba killed him!1!!!11" explanation. And since most people agree that it's most likely about Elliott Smith here, I guess it's safe to say that you were wrong. Plus he was suicidal and messed up. I think the chances of a suicide outweigh a murder. And I absolutely love Elliott Smith, I just don't think it's very likely he was killed...by his girlfriend, I mean... |
| Bright Eyes – Soul Singer in a Session Band Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Bright Eyes – Middleman Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The in-between, the absentee Is a beautiful disguise i love that. this is my favoite song off of cassadaga, too. the beginning with just the instrumental reminds me so much of this cassette tape i had and i loved it so much i bought the cd when i was little. it's like a peter rabbit soundtrack thing, i dont even know what from, but it used to put me to sleep at night. but this is a greaaaaaat song. |
| Bright Eyes – If the Brakeman Turns My Way Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Sufjan Stevens – In the Devil's Territory Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Elliott Smith – Cupid's Trick Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i love this song, mostly because its amid all these real quieter more acoustic songs. and i love that its not in the booklet and yeah its definitely "lick." i think the people saying it isnt are saying that cause they dont want it to be. |
| Heatmiser – Blue Highway Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i really love this song. especially the last line. |
| Heatmiser – Get Lucky Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Elliott Smith – The Biggest Lie Lyrics | 18 years ago |
And now I'm a crushed credit card registered to Smith Not the name that you call me with that is such a perfect line. i want to take it and carve it into everything i own. i absolutely love this song. it was the first of his that i've ever heard. |
| Elliott Smith – Independence Day Lyrics | 18 years ago |
mm i think the higher-than-high part means like high in a way beyond drugs or something. i always thought this was that-song-about-falling-in-love. it makes sense. he's reasurring the person that one day something will happen and when it does it'll be like nothing they have experinced before. |

| Elliott Smith – Shooting Star Lyrics | 18 years ago |
your love is sad. so perfect and so simple. |
| Elliott Smith – Son of Sam Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The last line of this song reminds me of the last lines of the sufjan stevens song, john wayne gacy jr. of course in reference to the serial killer... "And in my best behavior I am really just like him Look beneath the floor boards For the secrets I have hid " |
| Elliott Smith – Southern Belle Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| imfromtexas02: the "e" thing.... i thought it was funny that he was next to eminem. | |
| Elliott Smith – Wouldn't Mama Be Proud? Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i like the acoustic version he did live, even if i never got to personally see him live. which is awful. but it's so much prettier that way. |
| Elliott Smith – Ballad of Big Nothing Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i always thought the "you can do what you want to, whenever you want to" thing was about when you realize that you can basically do what you want now, if its drugs or whatever. (you really can't deny that candy-from-a-stranger line. it fits all too well) but then at the end, with the "it doesn't mean a thing; big nothing" its when you realize that your freedom doesn't necessarily mean that your'e not bound by anything. you might think your old or mature enough but there's always something holding you back, negating the "you can do what you want to whenever you want to" attitude. |

| Commander Venus – Dress to Please Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"To fall in love you get to fuck, so who's the whore?" THE best. |
| Commander Venus – The Walk-Around Problem Lyrics | 19 years ago |
theres a lot of talk of eyes on this album. including the latin phrases on the sleeve. they have to do with 1-tears dry to nothing but our eyes...die? or sink? 2-beauty is empty eyes or something. |
| Commander Venus – Jean's TV Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"I need to be surrounded by someone Waiting for a chance that things could change" "Emotional on cue, or is it hypocrites, like us, That fear what truth can do?" this beats new bright eyes by 3984903746763896493846 times. |

| Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| personally, i'd like this song to be about two boys. | |
| Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"I also understand that some gays claim to be christians and if that is the case then sufjan may have a reason to write about his convictions of sin and all that. (which he has multiple times). " claim to be christians? being gay isnt a sin. just because youre christian doesnt mean youll change your lifestyle to conform to the universal beliefs. because love is love is love is love. and i think that if you really love something then your beliefs honor that love. just because you see christianity as a code you have to follow strictly doesnt mean that everyone else does also. i dont see my religion that way and maybe stevens doesnt either. because i believe what i want to believe and i love who i want to love. |
| Feist – Mushaboom Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Watching the fire as we grow old I thought it was "as it grows"?!? but yeah, i think this version is much better than the bright eyes cover, but then again it was studio perfected and conor's wasnt. someone originally made me a mix cd with this on it. and i fell in love with it instantly. then i get motion sickness, and i was so happy this was on it ;D the cd sleeve said someone recomended Let it Die to Conor, and it was the only cd played on his whole tour. :D |

| Sufjan Stevens – Romulus Lyrics | 19 years ago |
And the little part about the hospital gown kills me too. Because to me it means dying away from what you love, away from home. The gentle grandfather who loved you and bought you a vcr so you wouldn't hurt anymore. :(((( |
| Sufjan Stevens – Romulus Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is my absolute favorite song of all time. But i can barely listen to it cause it makes me cry. Every time. And I'm not the sort of person who cries easily at songs. But it completely loses me from the vcr verse to "Our grandpa died in a hospital gown She didn't seem to care She smoked in her room and colored her hair And I was ashamed of her " The first time I heard it I cried and cried and cried. It's awful really. And I have barely listened to it, compared to other songs. Because its so sad. |
| Sufjan Stevens – Saul Bellow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"But the reelings make mistakes" Is really "but the BRAVEST make mistakes" and it is "get in" not "getting" But i love this song. |
| Bright Eyes – Down in a Rabbit Hole Lyrics | 19 years ago |

| Bright Eyes – Solid Jackson Lyrics | 19 years ago |
so hold your applause until the end and wait for the sadness to set in because that's the only feeling that's worth it :( again, another one of my faovorites. idk, i dont care much about the quality cause i like a lot of low-fi music thats 43968 times worse than this is, quality wise. |
