I love it. Its interesting that he doesnt seem to know the girl very well but hes already sure that they'd be perfect together. I do get that some of it is dark but i dont think its THAT creepy creepy stalkerish. It sounds like that uber crush that you have on someone who might be around you often but you dont really know. |

This song, for me, is pretty clear? Its about dating someone you tecnically shouldn't, such as an exs best friend or your friends ex etc. ("I've got friends in need, sweetheart ")
"since we started this thing out" makes it sound like such a big leap. A big decision and a big moment.
In normal circumstances he could start dating this girl and see what happens, they could gradually fall in love etc. but with making such a big leap as to go public with someone he shouldnt be with according to others he has to convince her that, "This could be destiny" and that its worth all the grief they'll get off others.
Hes trying to say that ofcourse those with "Bitter hearts" will always say crap "They will be watching you sometimes With their bitter hearts". But he wants uncomplicated "summer love" |

As regards "Subway is a porno", porn is like a fake type of intimacy. It takes sex, the most intimate you could ever be with someone, and makes it distant. The illusion of intimacy, like. For some people, by choice or whatever, porn is the closest thing to real intimacy. So its linked to being on a subway packed full of people and yet still feeling lonely as hell. You're surrounded by people but its only a fake type of intimacy, like porn. "Subway SHE is a porno" I think isn't calling the subway female but more saying a relationship in his life has no real intimacy. Being with someone and still feeling lonely. I read an interview with paul banks once who said he wrote it at a time when he was working maybe 80 hours a week, had no time for any real relationships and was very lonely. |

This maybe a stretch, and Im only probably thinking this because Im from/live in Ireland and so are they (but from the North) so I kinda always associate that with bombs and violence. I dont think its literally about sectarian crap but 'fight your war' etc. just kinda creates that kind of atmosphere around a more personal relationship. |
