| "Special Secret Sickness": googled the term, and turned up this 1967 article by Don Murray on "the Houswife's Secret Sickness" (alcoholism). I wonder if this is what Darnielle's referencing. If so, do you think maybe the last best thing he had going was his mother? I don't think so, but it makes me wonder. | |

Hm. I'm not sure what to make of this song -- I like the ideas I've read so far, but I'd like to make sense of it in terms of the entire album (Sunset Tree). Two themes prominent in the album: 1. His (abusive) stepdad 2. A girl/love interest (that he lost? that leads him to not-so-good places?) Any thoughts? |

Haha! You *don't* get much more homoerotic than Greek mythology, do you? I think the electronica is wonderful. It feels "outside" the "Sufjan genre" in a lot of ways, but it's still unique. Kinda like "Winner Needs a Wand" in that way, I think. |

| Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I'm surprised that so many people interpreted the narrator as an adult whose childhood memories are triggered by the wasp - the thought never occurred to me! The entire melody exhudes childhood; if it's possible, I think Sufjan's voice is lighter, airier, more delicate. "Thinking outrageously, I write in cursive" - this statement is so innocent, as though writing in "cursive" is so monumental. I saw the story as linear, no flashbacks. I also thought the narrator was male, but that's another story. =) |
