| The New Pornographers – The Bleeding Heart Show Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the 'golden handshake' line is, i think, a reference to a martin amis book called money, in which the main character mentions 'my golden handshake, my golden handjob'. | |
| Shiny Toy Guns – Don't Cry Out Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i actually thought it was "she's fine" as opposed to "cease fire" :] my interpretation was actually about the girl [narrator] being a tad manipulative; "i don't get you; i can't forget what you've forgotten all along" she's been in a relationship with someone and can't understand why he's forgiven her for stuff she's done in the past. "i've never been so alone" even when she's with him, they don't connect or anything. "don't cry out/she's fine" don't over-react, she's putting it all on [not sure if i misheard the she's fine bit =/] "i was pretending/your secret kiss of confidence/was my escape/the perfect game to play" she was literally pretending that she was weak, and self-concious and innocent, when in actual fact she was putting it all on. "ten night eight and i'm breaking away/i'm all dressed up and ready to play" she's sick of faking naiveity, she's going to throw away the mask and act how she likes. "seven six five four and i'm all over you" i heard it as 'over you', as in she's literally bored with the whole thing. "counting three two one and i'm having fun" the whole charade is over, she's enjoying herself. "Your fascination/with naked walls of silk and skin/with no conditions" he's utterly oblivious to how much she's suddenly changed, he's suddenly more interested in bare walls than her. "i needed you to notice/that's all i wanted" she wants attention, wants to make a drama out of what's happened, and he's refusing to play her game. |

| Fall Out Boy – I've Got All This Ringing in My Ears and None on My Fingers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
probably me being utterly morbid, but this song sounds almost suicidal to me; "you're a canary, i'm a coalmine", as if she's the warning sign that he's losing it, turning almost lethal. "sorrow is all the rage", he's almost condoning his sadness. "take one for the team/you all know what i mean" he's taking a self-directed hit for the benefit of everyone around him - as though he's better dead. "tell the boys where to find my body" - literally. my explanation doesn't make much sense for the description of the girl [i'm assuming its a girl, anyway =/] "the truth hurts worse than anything i could bring myself to do to you", people often get annoyed by suicide attempts because it makes all the help they're trying to give to the victim seem pointless and unappriciated. as in, 'doing what i want/feel would hurt you more than anything'. |

| Adam and Andrew – Emo Kid Lyrics | 18 years ago |
yeahh, i thought it was stabbY rip stab stab, not stab me. it's raddd. except some kid i know doesn't really understand that it's taking the mickey out of emo kids [he's self-proclaimed emo], and spends his whole time like "OMG, i want a nintendo!" and stuff. bit sad, reallyy :] |
| Avril Lavigne – Girlfriend Lyrics | 18 years ago |
um. i actually thought this song was a parody? maybe i was wrong in making the assumption that even avril lavigne wasn't sad enough to write a song like this SERIOUSLY. the "she's like, so whatever" section's not too bad, but the rap-chant-bit makes me want to hurl -.- the guy in the video's pretty hottt though - anyone know who he is? :] |

| Cobra Starship – It's Warmer in the Basement Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Cobra Starship – The Kids Are All Fucked Up Lyrics | 18 years ago |
yup, that was how he introduced it at Brixton the other night - [specifically] "this song is for anyone who's ever been young" -cheer- "and in love" -bigger cheer- "AND ON DRUGS" -massive cheer- :] i think it's one of their best live songs, absolutely love it. |

| Babyshambles – Albion Lyrics | 19 years ago |
boring lovechild, i think you'll find that the places in the lyrics vary from recording to recording :] my dad heard one of the first ever live playings of this track, when pete used to work in a bar in north london - the libertines used to play tiny warm-up gigs to like, 6 or 7 people in this pub before they got famous x] |

| The Killers – All These Things That I've Done Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I really didn't think it was anything to do with religion - in fact, having returned to this song after not listening to the Killers for a long, something immediately struck me, and now I'm pretty much convinced that it's about a kid leaving home. "Is there room for one more son?" is him asking if he can stay with someone for a while. He wants to "stand up...let go", or escape from his home. "You know...no, you don't" is an argument with parents/guardians, when they claim they understand his need for freedom. The head ache/heart break line refers again to the arguments [head aches from the yelling; heart breaks from what was said]. He feels like he's mature enough to leave home, but no-one seems to get that. |

this song is a total guilty pleasure x] it's cute! |

| Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i prefer the placebo version too...it's just kind of harsher, if that makes sense? and everyone here seems to think this song's positive! my first thought on hearing it was that it was about a person comparing his/her life to someone else's, and deciding it sucked. therefore, he/she wants god to swap their places, so he can do everything he wants to do [run up that hill, etc], and he'd be "stealing this moment" from whoever it was. the person doesn't want to upset him by disagreeing [about how bad his life is], and he doesn't realise just how much he's upsetting the person by talking about his own problems [perhaps cause they have problems of their own?]. 'is there so much hate' etc, is about him realising that he half hates even his closest friends, maybe blames them for stuff that's happened, and he's justifying his outcry to maybe swap lives with this person, by telling the person that they 'both matter, don't we?' |
| Alex Parks – mad world Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i faaaaar prefer the tears for fears version...but not going into details on this, i think it sounds a little...average. jeff buckley can do straight acoustic songs because he's got an incredible voice, but i don't think it works so well with alex parks - on the final voice, she sounds like she's trying to be a pop diva, which isn't the point of the song. though i have to say, she's a very sweet person in real life ^.^ |
| Placebo – Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i heard it on the OC, and couldn't figure out where i'd heard it before - despite the fact that i adore the kate bush original of the song. i like both versions, in different ways - the placebo's a lot slower, and more...chilling, and kind of nicer, i guess. as for meanings? i actually thought it was about a person telling someone about just how much his life sucked, and how, if they exchanged place, he'd be 'running up that hill with no problems' [and he wishes he could]. |
| Belle & Sebastian – Seeing Other People Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i actually never thought of it as a guy-guy thing - it always occured to me that he was talking through the eyes of guy, who's best friend is either a prostitute or just a tad slutty. okay, very slutty. he's into her, but won't admit it, claiming that they're kissing 'just for practice', that it doesn't mean anything, and if he pretends he's not bothered [remains passive] and she's just looking for someone who likes her as a person [just wanting a cuddle], then they'll both be fine. the 'other boys' who're queing up are her clients/hookups. i think when he says that they're seeing other people, it's his justification for not getting involved with her - he knows he's not with anyone, and her hookups don't mean much, but that's what he'll say anyway. the gigolo is about her realising that she's no longer with just a couple of guys, and she's seeing the world through the eyes of the less innocent [and prostitute doesn't have the same ring as gigolo!] the kissing elbow/reflection is about her not wanting to admit she's unwanted, and she's trying to pretend it's someone/something else. the going with girls is probably a mickey-take [especially about them knowing what they're doing], meant in a teasing way. |
| David Bowie – Star Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I actually tooko this kind of on face value - as if he was talking about his "friends" (i originally though roomates - perhaps at college, before he got famous), and what happened when, basically, they'd blown all their money, probably on drugs. They all seem to have ambitions, and he thinks his if the only one vaguely sensible one - like, "yeahh, i'll become a rock star to pay for our daily baked beans on toast!". he's also laughing at them, in a friendly way - "well, he can tell you that he tried,". |

| David Bowie – The Prettiest Star Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I don't actually agree about it being a proposal - he sounds a lot as if he's talking in retrospect; "When I LOVED the prettiest star". "Staying back in your memory are the movies in the past" |

| The Killers – Mr. Brightside Lyrics | 19 years ago |
having listened to this song about 5000000000 times over the alst couple of days, along with 'when you were young', i've thought of something else; "I'm coming out of my cage And I’ve been doing just fine Gotta gotta gotta be down Because I want it all" I think he's meaning, he's metaphorically coming out of his cage - he's becoming more confident, and he feels he's doing quite well, but he's knows he's got to calm down, because he ends up getting into everything too deep ('i want it all'). "It started out with a kiss How did it end up like this It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss" He's fallen for some girl, and he's thinking about her and her boyfriend/crush - he's seen them kiss, and he can't help if that's it, but he's trying to convince himself that 'it was only a kiss'. "Now I’m falling asleep And she’s calling a cab While he’s having a smoke And she’s taking a drag" He's kind of half asleep, and considering what could be going on between this guy and 'his' girl, worst-scenario. He thinks she's gone round to his, but she's called a cab, as though she'll be going home. Whilst they wait, they're sharing a cigarette. "Now they’re going to bed And my stomach is sick And it’s all in my head But she’s touching his—chest Now, he takes off her dress Now, let me go" I have this idea that whilst the cab's outside, when they're going to say goodbye, and it all goes wrong, and they end up going to bed, etc. He wants to stop seeing it, but he's now pretty sure it's really happening. "I just can’t look its killing me And taking control" He really doesn't want to think about it, but now he's almost in too deep, and he has to keep going. "Jealousy, turning saints into the sea Swimming through sick lullabies Choking on your alibis" I think he's suggesting that he gets why people can get so jealous that they do incredibly stupid things - he's picturing them (and, in that, himself) almost "swimming" through everything the girl he likes has said, and seeing all these "sick" innuendos, etc. And then he's imagining her apologising, perhaps to him (for breaking his heart), or maybe to the guy (like, 'that was a mistake...'), but not quite managing to tell the truth - choking on her words. "But it’s just the price I pay Destiny is calling me Open up my eager eyes ‘Cause I’m Mr Brightside" I have a feeling he's being kind of sarcastic, like, "well, it doesn't matter, i've got some higher prupose, that involves imagining the girl i love with some other guy". He's not eager at all, and he's not looking at the bright side. |
| David Bowie – Slip Away Lyrics | 19 years ago |
it's a pretty depressing song. and i kind of half doubt the song's entirely about the show. i mean, i get it as a basic theme, but i think it's a metaphor for something...probably something to do with a relationship ending. |
| Bright Eyes – Lover I Don't Have to Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i always saw the "I need some meaning I can memorize" line as being as though he's saying, i need something i can remember, that keeps me sane. or maybe i'm just weird -.- | |
| Orson – Bright Idea Lyrics | 19 years ago |
heyy, it may be dull, and repetitive, but it's cuuuuuute x) so, i think it's more about a guy and his ex, who he still has feelings for. she was always the more out-going one, but he was the witty/geeky type [think seth-summer for an OC analogy], and they split, because he thought they weren't meant to be. then, without him, she went and became famous in the music industry, and he wants to tell her how he feels, but he's still not totally sure, and he thinks she'll reject him. |
| Hellogoodbye – Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn Lyrics | 19 years ago |
woahh. suprised there aren't more comments! this is the only hellogoodbye song i don't entirely dislike, though it's still a little too over-produced for my taste. anyway, this song's obviously about a guy who's completely overwhelmed by how amazing he believes this girl to be. oh, and a correction - instead of "so she keeps us far apart", it ought to be "states that keep us far apart", meaning that she's moved away. he knows he ought to get over her, but he can't ["feel like i will never learn"]. i also think that the "back-up plan/start acceleration/take it back", is actually just that he's looking for her, because she won't come back. start acceleration is literally the acceleration of his car as he looks for her, and square one is home. |
| Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I personally prefer the Jeff Buckley version, but all credit to LH for such phenomenal lyrics. As for interpretations, the bathing on a room section clearly refers to the biblical story of David and Bathsheba - he watched her, fell in love, slept with her and got her pregnant, then attempted to forced her husband to sleep with her (so he couldn't be blamed). On failing that, he sent Uriah to the frontline and had him killed. The hair, however, is about Samson [and Delilah]. Perhaps the entire song is just a comparison of whoever this woman is, to various biblical temptresses? |

| The Pipettes – I Like a Boy in Uniform (School Uniform) Lyrics | 19 years ago |

repetitive, irritating, and fantastic. one teensy correction - I am dreaming 'bout the girls that I know, not of. |
| The Pipettes – Pull Shapes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The Pipettes = a love hate thing. On one level, they make me wanna murder them, purely because it's too...cheesy. It's very OTT pop. On the other hand, Riot Becki and Gwenno both have phenomal voice. ^^ Lovely song, though a little cheesy. The video's sweet. |
| The Killers – Mr. Brightside Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This guy ("Mister Brightside") has just realised that he's got into a pretty sh!tty relationship with a bitchy girl, which was never meant to happen ('how did it end up like this/it was only a kiss'), and one night, he was round hers, and became convinced she was seeing someone else, so, when he's going home in a taxi, he's got all these images of her with another guy, and he sort of believes it, even though he realises it's 'all in his head'. | |
| Lostprophets – Last Summer Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song's completely striking a chord with me atm, since I'm about to leave my school to move 3000 miles away, but all of my friends are basically sticking together. And, yeah, the whole "Listen to the waves as they all crash down" live works, since we live by the sea, and will most likely spend our whole summer on the beach ^^ |

| Blink-182 – Easy Target Lyrics | 19 years ago |

No. God, no. It's about a vampire. Obviously. Holly's looking dry - needs blood. "let her slit my throat give her ammo if she'll use it" - slit his throat, FOR the blood. And the photograph this is cause vampire's apparently can't be photographed. ^^ |

| The White Stripes – Jolene (Dolly Parton cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I actually prefer Dolly's version. Much as I love Jack, it sounds a little too mope-y whiny-ish for comfort. Still a good song though. | |
| Papa Roach – Scars Lyrics | 19 years ago |
First verse is pretty self-explanitary, but I think he writes this verse in retrospect –it’s at the end, when he just wants to get away from everything that’s happened. He’s “pissed cause she came around” in the first place, he wishes she’d just left him alone in the first place. He tried to help her once, but she rejected him (“Saw you goin’ down/But you never realized”). And then he “left his heart open”, and let her get to him, but she “didn’t understand” just how much she was screwing him up, by almost transferring her problems to him, and he wants her to, obviously, “go fix herself”. She’s not his problem anymore. He’s got to sort himself out. As for the chorus? He opens his heart to people that really aren’t worth the trouble, but he only ‘sews himself shut” when it’s too late. He always remembers what happens every time he lets someone get to him, (his “scars remind him”) but he always tries again, he feels that he has to help other people to make himself happy (“I tear my heart open just to feel”). I just spent ten minutes explaining a song that really doesn’t require an explanation. |

| Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Whatever the meaning, I love this song. The bit at the beginning - "So if you're lonely You know I'm here waiting for you I'm just a crosshair I'm just a shot away from you And if you leave here You leave me broken, shattered I lie I'm just a crosshair I'm just a shot then we can die" - sounds fantastic, and the sets the song up really well. |
| Ladytron – Seventeen Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The modelling angle seems to make sense...but the first thing I thought of upon hearing this song (it's mentioned in Let's Get Lost, by Sarra Manning) is, probably because it's mentioned by an ex-rockstar, the music industry - it's all great when they're kids, who'll sign away their lives in contracts they don't read, when they're young and naive, but then suddenly they becaome maturity, realise what they've done, and escape. They're no longer "fun" in the eyes of the record company. The polaroid aspect refers to the image they'll spread - at first, of the band they want to back, in a positive light, and then the evil, corrupting adults who are out for the money. "They'll let you know" - if you're still considered famous, if you're good enough. 'Kay - it made more sense in my head. Now it seems kinda stupid. |

| Camera Obscura – Eighties Fan Lyrics | 19 years ago |

| Blink-182 – Always Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"well the video is out now (not on tv but the web) and i've seen it. its a hot ass blonde chick making out with travis, slapping tom, and giving mark blue balls..." It has to be said. What the HELL?! Look at the information given by the band re the video. All 3 of them were being played by the same girl. Not that that exactly coincides with the story being told within the lyrics, but anyway. |

| David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"Hmm. All interesting. Maybe I'm wrong. I always just thought that Ziggy Stardust was David Bowie's glam alter-ego. Basically, like he was everything about him times a million. His own fears, inadequacies, ego, lust..etc just magnified." Gotta agree with that. The point is, there is nothing original about the rock 'n roll lifestyle of various artists. When you get down to the fact, the story is very similar - rags to riches, alcohol and drugs, it's all there. But who better to write a song about (especially one in which he goes into such depth about the character) than, basically, himself? In 1972 (at the Royal Festival Hall), he stood up and told the crowds that he was Ziggy. Isn't that just his own Vince Taylor story? To him, Ziggy was his own personal form of Jesus, even with his own crucifiction style ending - he had to die for Bowie to be able to return to himself. He was writing about his own fame, and how it all was going to go wrong - four years later, his drug and alcohol problems reached breaking point, and he and Angie split up. At this point, he was staying in Berlin, and this was around the time he gave the infamous "sieg heil" salute. Still very slightly stuck within Ziggy? I believe so. |
| David Bowie – Oh! You Pretty Things Lyrics | 19 years ago |
He was playing a role. Ziggy Stardust was...well, who knows what, make of him what you will, and David Bowie became Ziggy Stardust. Yes, okay, I agree, for a while the whole thing did go a little OTT, and that's still being picked up on today. You ask people who David Bowie is, and they don't think of the music, it's "Wasn't he the gay one?". Ridiculous. Completely insane. 'Kay, rant over now. This song is fantastic. Pure genius (which is a way I'd describe a lot of Bowie songs) |
