the picture i get when really thinking about what this song means, is shannon on the his porch back in indiana, with his acoustic. i think he was really frustrated with his life. indiana didn't have a lot to offer for him. he needed to be free of the small town. he wrote this song when he was young, living there still, and he wanted to get away. i think this was kind of like an explanation to his family and friends about why he needed to leave and go away to california "But that's okay they're just afraid to change." he is saying that he's not afraid to make this drastic change--a move across the country--because he didn't want to just fade away. i love this song. i can't even explain how much it has done for me. as many of you other people, it pulled me out of some shitty times. r.i.p. shannon hope to see some of you at the vigil. |
