| The Decemberists – The Perfect Crime #2 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
If we're quite done shitting on the song...The site is about song meanings not what you think of the song. It's obviously about some sort of robbery, probably a big one due to the use of safe. Valley reminds me of the practice of the Landowner's house being far above the valley of houses, so maybe it's local men gettting their own back for unfair practices. It would fit with the word mogul. Any more interps? |

| Shinedown – 45 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
"In a box high up on the shelf, left for you, no one else There's a piece of a puzzle known as life Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight" I thought that was the gun left to his unborn child, referencing an earlier opinion that the song was about the singer's father/grandfather who killed themselves, that the gun was left for the child so that when they get to the same point they can make this decision too. A part of life is death (the piece of the puzzle) and life is a puzzle to work out. It's wrapped in guilt because the giver is guilty for his death. If it was the gun it would have to be sealed up tight to protect it from damp. |

| The Tea Party – Writing's On The Wall Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think it's about being at the end of your tether, having nowhere else to go and having to turn and face the music. The phrase 'the writing on the wall' means a sign of impending disaster or danger., so I think it's about having to turn and face it. This also matches with the line about warning signs. | |
| Show Of Hands – Yeovil Town Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Songnotes from the album: I used to live just over the county border from "Yeovil Town" and wish to state for the record that it is indeed a fine place. This incident actually happened, but it should not put anyone off visiting the town after dark. | |
| Show Of Hands – You're Mine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Songnotes from the album: Being raised in small west country seaside towns both Phil and I are fully aware of the poignant atmosphere of end-of-summer romance. "You're mine" is hopefully enhanced by some "whale noises" on the fiddle. |

| Show Of Hands – Widdecome Fair Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Songnotes from the album: A friend told me that a priest, Lionel Fanthorpe was exploring an alternative, more sinister interpretation of the well known folk song "Widdecombe Fair". This started me on the road to writing this version and I thank them both for the inspiration. |

| Show Of Hands – Northwest Passage Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Songnotes from the album: Last year a friend played an album by the late Stan Rogers and we learnt the "Northwest Passage" just before a trip to Canada. We sung it at a wonderful Calgary folk club, naively unaware of the songs status as a Canadian classic! The audience generously accepted our offering and we felt encouraged to come home and record it. |

| Show Of Hands – Don't Look Now Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Songnotes from the album: Phil was looking for some supernatural songs for one of his many recording projects and he remembered "Don't look now" - a song I wrote when I was twenty and had completely forgotten about. I found some old, mouldering lyric sheets, played it to him and it ended up on the album! |

| Show Of Hands – Come By Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Songnotes from the album: In 1986, one week after the Chernobyl fire I moved to the Dorset hills. Since then a song about hill farming lay waiting to be written. Then in the summer of 2000 we met the John Wright band in Holland. John, a working shepherd as well as a remarkable ballad singer, gave me some words and references to include; "Come By" was the result. |

| Show Of Hands – Cold Frontier Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Songnotes from the album: On a recent trip to a warm and sunny Italy I wondered about how an ordinary Roman soldier would have felt about being posted to a cold frontier on the Tamar, the Tyne or the Dee. After more than three centuries here it must have seemed as if their world would never fade. Once again with a common currency and an almost border-free Europe we can share the same illusions... |
|
| Show Of Hands – Are We Alright? Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Songnotes from the album: A throw away comment turned into song. Someone said after a recent concert that if you have to ask the question "are we alright?" then its probably too late to save the situation. Maybe, I'm not sure. | |
| The Organ – Brother Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Acrisius is right. This song is about a soldier. here we go into the fight they’re back again the enemy look alive, watch out or actually look like you're alive, so people can help you brother could refer to a brother at arms, a fellow soldier, or a real brother. Taking cover is done when you're in danger i.e. under fire lie down in a field if you can they're on a field op look at the night sky searching for planes oh, where does it end? sometimes it hurts when you care about me saying he shouldn't care about the narrator because... but it’s going to hurt more when they take you away from me they're going to die. I think that's enough evidence. Although the beauty of songs is that they can be interpreted in any way. I quite like the idea of a forbidden love. |
