Sixx: A.M. – Van Nuys Lyrics 17 years ago
a) van nuys isn't a rich area... NOW. this was set in 1987 i believe.

b) can't it be about both? yeah, if you read the book, van nuys was his personal hell, and part of the whole sick irony of it was that someone could be as desperately miserable in the middle of that big indulgent rockstar 'dream' that so many other people were envying. that's half of why he seemed to feel so isolated, he felt he couldn't trust anybody; the other half being because his life revolved around his addiction so extensively.

Hurt – Rapture Lyrics 17 years ago
god, there's so much incoherent babble on this page. even the semi-coherent like the one above me... 'born in wet lock'. there's no such fucking thing as 'wet lock'. you mean born OUT of WEDLOCK, chumpstain.

this song reminds me of a modern day Abraham/Isaac sort of story. a parent kills their child because they believe deity told them to. first of all, they'd be viewed as absolutely psychotic, especially in modern times. second... Abraham would've killed his child for his faith... and that's good for his faith, but...

who the hell wants Abraham for a father in that case? or a spouse?

Kill Hannah – Race the Dream Lyrics 17 years ago
Between the title and this line:

Our doctors say,
"You know the drill. This broke heart won't ever heal.
She needs drugs, and he needs 'em just as bad."

This song makes me think strongly of the movie Requiem for a Dream.

Nirvana – You Know You're Right Lyrics 18 years ago
Your mom might've seen suicide attempts via taking a lot of pills, but overdose via intravenous heroin injection's a tad different buttercup.

When you hit the lethal dose on heroin, you die. No more pesky breathing, puking, hell you're not around long enough to get the needle out of your arm. The lethal dose is the lethal dose no matter what your tolerance is, the most tolerant junkie will die when they hit lethal dose. Kurt had several times the lethal dose in his bloodstream.

That means there's no way he had time to plunk around with a shotgun and try to pull a trigger with his toe. And it's hard to shoot up after you blow your head off.

Therefore, someone else was there.

I wouldn't be preposterous enough to say who, or to say whether it was murder or assisted suicide.

I will say though that saying someone definitely committed suicide and could not have been murdered-- just because they were habitually depressed and attempted suicide in the past-- that's just as ignorant as anything else that's assumed in this case.

Sixx: A.M. – Van Nuys Lyrics 18 years ago
Van Nuys is a rich section of Los Angeles, it's the center of the Valley. Probably where Nikki was living at the time. Most of the songs referring to Van Nuys have a feeling of someone who's earned their way there but doesn't feel like they 'belong' perhaps.

I had several thoughts on the 'eyes are blue' line. My first thought is that in L.A. amongst the trendy or rich crowd, blue eyes is in that standard of beauty like blonde hair and if you don't have it you acquire it (such as through contacts). Another thought I had was like ahanix's that drug use and stress causes the blue bruised 'bags' under eyes. The third thought I had was that it wasn't 'blue' but 'blew' as in a high person who's pupils are blown up huge.

K's Choice – Not An Addict Lyrics 18 years ago
The song's not about smoking, at least not cigarettes or pot. It's not about multiple drugs. It's about heroin. Those who've been-there-done-that-got-the-tee-shirt can't miss the specifics. It just mentions multiple ways of doing it-- starting off snorting it and/or smoking it, progressing to shooting it, then mainlining... I don't know if we're allowed to put links or if it'll even work, but there are two good videos set to this song about the movies 'Gia' and 'The Basketball Diaries', both of which deal with heroin addiction.

I heard:
"And all the times you said to me
That falling down WAS destiny"

As for the song... given the context it's not too hard to determine most of it, the album's themed around Sixx's heroin use in '87 and his recovery. But there's one line that made me think.

"As the blood is rushing
to my head
And from my wrists"

Suicide attempt?

Nickelback – Far Away Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with karabear2.

To me, it's about an old girlfriend I had as a teen. We both wanted to seem cool and tough and were a wild couple, let silly pride get in the way of telling each other how we really felt, faded apart playing silly games. We were both guilty.

This time, This place
Misused, Mistakes
Too long, Too late
Who was I to make you wait

Now, as adults, we run into each other and we can admit a little more... I don't know on her side, but I know that for me after some time passed I realized that I did love her, and meeting her again I love her all the same if not more after all these years. And even though knowing it stings and I still can't say how I feel, the idea of not seeing her again for years is almost unbearable.

I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you’ll be with me
and you’ll never go
Stop breathing if
I don’t see you anymore

Only hurdle now is that we've both been hurt so much that it's not pride holding us apart, it's fear. This odd silence wishing the other would speak.

I wanted
I wanted you to stay
‘Cause I needed
I need to hear you say
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long
So keep breathing
‘Cause I’m not leaving
Hold on to me and
never let me go

So I guess the song expresses what I want to say and don't have the courage to.

Kudos to the songwriters for writing one that's universally identifiable here, and combining it with poignant instrumentals.

Loreena McKennitt – Dante's Prayer Lyrics 19 years ago
I personally don't find a "spirit guide" named Lugh to be any more ridiculous or outlandish than someone trying to tell me that the source of all life is an old bearded guy named Yahweh. A male? What's the point of interlocking parts when you have no one to interlock with? And what kinda wonky name's Yahweh anyway? How'd he know his name was Yahweh with no one to call him by it? Did he just make it up? Why would he need a name to begin with?

Ahem. Yes. It's all just interpretation. Different interpretations of the same thing, varying in what each person's most comfortable with. If you're not able to view religious diversity then given all the pagan roots Loreena draws from, you puzzle me. And I reccommend listening to Full Circle as well.

As for the song... to me, it speaks of the courage and strength to endure the trials and pain and mockery of following your own path in life. Whether it be career, lifestyle, religion? Walking the path less tread is never an easy choice. Dante walked a different path to his God, and his God was his passion in life. It speaks to me of someone talking about what they endured, and urging those who also follow a different path to be encouraged that others have done so before. They're not entirely alone and their task is doable.

When the dark night seems endless...
Please, remember me.

Alternately, flip the perspective and it can be Dante's God speaking to him.
