The solos in this song sell it. They fit the self-indulgence contained within the lyrics, but at the same time, they're magnificent -- especially the raw energy at the beginning of the sax solo and the unbelievably high notes at the end of the guitar solo. Has Pink Floyd ever dropped the ball in the instrumental department, though?

I've always pictured this song to be completely sarcastic in meaning. This guy just got out of a relationship with his one true love, and he's trying to keep himself composed...
"People wondering why we broke apart. The great pretender, here I go again."
He's really torn up inside and has to tell himself that he'll be ok when he really knows he won't. |

I saw Journey at a November concert in Birmingham, AL, and a guy who worked with them for decades had just passed. They dedicated this song to him, and it has since had a really nostalgic air to it. Everyone can remember some amazing time in their life, and that's what it brings up for me.
The pictures on the screens were of San Fran though :). |

I think this song is about a casual relationship to begin with, but through "learning" her and being with her so much, he grows to love her. I agree with the "better to have loved and lost..." translation of this song, and I think in the end, he's just glad for the time they've had together. If someday something happens to them, he'll be glad if it was just til St. Patrick's Day. |
