I think the song is as much about young love as it is about past love. Clearly the two are no longer together; perhaps the "you" in this song relates to the "you" in Oh Comely, songs that both present cases of the narrator wishing things could go back to the way they were.
I agree with words&tricks on his view of the parents in relation to their emotional development, but one line I think has been missed by many so far: the last. It implies that the narrator understands the parents, and we also see a relation back to the previous verse. Both the speaker and the parents did not "dare" to do something special, and even though the narrator did reach his lover emotionally, he never fully penetrated her soul (which is why the tower is "tumbling," adding a second meaning to the line- the first being the reference to the ivory tower of virginity being broken between narrator and lover), just as the parents never became completely hopeless. It's a Figure 8 of a song, as the parents and children part ways but meet up in similar situations in the end. |

A brilliant, hilarious role reversal; usually, we hear the point of view of the victim at the cruel, uncaring hands of the kidnapper. Here, however, the kidnapper is not only funny but our narrator- a sympathetic one at that. |

I think this song is about a girl (the female singer at the start of the song) who wants to hear some live music as opposed to something heard on a stereo or radio. The boy starts to play and she appreciates it- unfortunately, he isn't technically very good. A subtly humor pervades this song; for instance, he receives compliments, though a technical measurement tool of sound quality would "say otherwise." |
